Youth crime: The case of eight teen girls, a murder and what we know

Guest: Jennifer Pagliaro, crime reporter In December, eight teenage girls were accused of allegedly swarming and killing a man in downtown Toronto. This shocking crime is now making its way through the criminal justice system, and due to the ages of the suspects, there are limits on what can be reported on the crime. Jennifer Pagliaro, a crime reporter for the Star, has been following the case through bail hearings, and joins us to tell what she can and can't say about this incident and what it says about the escalation of young people perpetrating more serious crimes in the Greater Toronto Area. Our Defence Minister on threats, bigger budgets, and Canada's new relationship with the U.S.

Canada's Minister of National Defence David McGuinty joins Althia to discuss increases to the country's defense budget and what the relationship looks like with the U.S. going forward. Their conversation follows Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement this week that Canada will greatly increase military spending to 2 per cent of GDP just as NATO allies get together later this month to discuss raising the bar to 5 per cent. 4 games, 36 runs, +13 run differential, 1st place: The Blue Jays sweep the New York Yankees

Guest: Blue Jays outfielder Nathan Lukes The Blue Jays have swept their way into first place by beating the New York Yankees four straight – the first time that has ever happened in Toronto. The Jays scored 36 runs over the four-game sweep, coming from behind twice and rebounding from blowing an eight-run lead once, in four intense games in an incredible atmosphere at Rogers Centre. Since May 27, the Jays are 23-10 – tied with the Houston Astros for the best record in the major leagues over that span – and they have turned an eight-game deficit in the division into a one-game lead. It's the first time they've been in first place outside the first three weeks of a season since 2016. Nathan Lukes put the Jays on top to stay in Thursday's finale with a two-run double that ended an epic 14-pitch at-bat. Why many international students skip meals to survive in Canada

But that dream is unaffordable for many. As the cost of living keeps rising and tuition remains high for students from out of country, many international students have limited resources and turn to strained food banks for support. Yet, one Brampton food bank banned international students and puzzlingly cites abuse. That made headlines and brought attention to what these students have been grappling with.
