White noise is the most commonly used sound for babies, it helps them sleep and reduces anxiety. The womb sound can help babies fall asleep because it mimics their mother's heartbeat in the womb. Sounds with a slow tempo that is soothing for babies and adults. Lullabies are songs that have been traditionally sung by mothers to their children to lull them into sleep. Many different sounds can be used to help babies relax and sleep. One of these sounds is the womb sound. Another type of sound that is often used for relaxation is brown noise or white noise. Brown noise is a type of sound that has a low frequency, which means it sounds like it’s from far away, like the ocean or a waterfall. White noise has a higher frequency and sounds like it’s from close by, like rain or wind. The womb sound is a type of brown noise that is supposed to be calming and relaxing. It is said to be one of the babies' most popular sleep sounds. This sound has been proven to help babies sleep faster and sleep better. This is because it mimics the environment in the womb, where they are surrounded by this type of sound. On the other hand, the white noise sound has been proven to help babies sleep longer and stay asleep longer. This type of sound helps block out other noises that can disrupt their sleep, like noisy traffic outside their window. Babies can be very sensitive to their environment. They are still developing, and their brains are not yet fully developed. That’s why it’s essential to provide them with a soothing environment to help them sleep better. Babies have a lot of work to do before they can sleep. They must regulate their body temperature, digest food, and eliminate waste. Babies are also trying to figure out how to get comfortable in the world. All this work takes energy, and it is exhausting!

Is My Baby Right or Left Handed (and when will I know)?

How soon can you know whether your baby is going to be right or left handed, and what can that tell you about how their brains are developing? Kim and Leila dive into the surprising science that links dominant hand with language, emotion, genes, and the environment. And since Science Baby himself is a leftie, we consider his experience growing up in a right-handed world. In this episode: We introduce the idea of handedness being potentially linked to language, noting that left lateralisation of language in the brain could be linked to the predominance of right-handers within humans. We talk about the genetic basis for handedness preference We discuss when a hand preference is likely to emerge in our babies and toddlers We examine how much the external environement can affect dominant hand use We use brian lateralisation again to explain why mothers tend to cradle their babies on the left, regardless of which is their dominant hand We discuss a study that found that kids who show an early preference for their right hand tend to be more advanced with language - noting its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opposite pattern seen in Science Baby We talk about the experience of our young left-handers in a right-hand world.

Plus, winter poorly baby worries (we're talking rash anxiety, guys), winter colds and flu's and hyper-panicked visits to A&E (oh, we've all been there). But on the other (dafter) side, juicy boots, Christmas party mornings-afters and how best to pronounce Petit Filou. Seriously.

    Episode 171: Rachel Reeves

Welcome to a new series of Spinning Plates! My podcast where I speak to working women who happen to be mothers. We are up to episode 171 now, and fast approaching 6 years since I started the podcast with Fearne Cotton in 2020.  My first guest of the new series is Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer. She has made history as the first woman in 800 years to hold that title.  I spoke to her in December, just after the budget, and she explained the long process that leads up to a budget, and the immediate aftermath.  I must confess I was initially hesitant about taking up the invitation from Downing Street’s press office about having Rachel on the podcast. She has had a lot of public scrutiny and I know from experience that when I’ve had political guests, the comments can get fiery. That being said, I was too curious and intrigued to know what it feels like to be in that role.. the public gaze, the Westminster culture, the power of holding the UK purse strings and the reality of raising a young family alongside it all.  We’re pretty much the same age and we discussed how there were only 19 women in parliament out of 650 when we were born, compared to now when there are about 250 female MPs. I know Rachel cares about encouraging women into politics and shared her belief that ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’. She hopes that young girls will feel a job at the top of politics is possible after seeing her as chancellor. We spoke about what a shock it was for her children, now aged 10 and 12, to have to move house two weeks after the election, how their home life in No 11 Downing Street differs from ‘normal’ families, and how Rachel and her husband try to shield them from the news, tuning into Capital Radio rather than the Today programme when they're all together at breakfast time.  I found our chat fascinating and I appreciate how open Rachel was, letting us get a little insight into how she navigates the pressures of work and power and motherhood. Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
