In our last session, we already introduced you to Paula and Olivia, the 2 college girls, with the boat scene, where they are making up backstories for the other passengers on the boat. What’s really interesting about this scene, is that Jing Jing and I had very different takes on it. Did you watch this scene? What did you see? What did you think of the girls? Let’s hear it from the actresses who portrayed these girls, on how they understood their characters.

然後，我們也要聊聊一個很有趣的英文片語：「holier than thou」—— 究竟是什麼意思呢？

Let’s hear it from the actresses themselves, what they make of their characters:

From Sydney Sweeney:

“Olivia and Paula met each other in college. Paula introduced her to different beliefs than what she grew up with and she’s learned a lot through being Paula’s friend and how the world affects Paula differently than it affects Olivia.”

來自 Sydney Sweeney（飾 Olivia）：

And let’s talk about the term, “holier than thou”.

🔹 再來談談「holier than thou」這個詞：

這是一個英文的成語，直譯是「比你還神聖」。這個詞其實源自《聖經》，原文中是用來批評那些假裝虔誠、實際上卻驕傲自大的人。現代英文中，它常常用來形容那些覺得自己在道德上比別人高尚的人，尤其是那種邊批評別人、邊覺得自己站在正義制高點的人。這種態度往往讓人覺得他們很傲慢、很愛批判別人，表現出一種「我是對的，你們都是錯的」的氣場。

在《白蓮花大飯店》（The White Lotus）第一季中，Paula 和 Olivia 就有這樣的互動與氣場，尤其體現在他們如何評論酒店裡其他白人有錢客人的行為，甚至把自己擺在一個道德至高點上。

🧠 Paula 喜歡「dissect」別人是什麼意思？

在《白蓮花大飯店》第一季裡，Paula 給人的感覺非常聰明、敏感，但也有點冷峻。她不像 Olivia 那樣張揚，她更習慣用觀察和分析的方式理解他人，但這個過程常常帶有一種批判性。

可以這樣說：

Paula 很擅長也很喜歡「剖析」別人，觀察他們的言行、拆解他們的動機，甚至在心中為他們貼上標籤。

💬 如果你想說得更具象一點：

Paula 是那種坐在旁邊不多話，但其實已經把每個人的想法、目的、虛偽都看穿的人。她有一種內建的「X光眼」，可以掃描每個人的內在世界，但她並不一定會對你溫柔，她的剖析往往是帶著批判的，甚至是冷冷的。

We also mention the phrase, "he clocks her".

「he clocks her」這是一個英文片語，根據語境不同，它可以有兩種完全不同的意思：

1. 看出、觀察到某人（尤指細節或氣場）
   意思是看出對方的底細、真實身份，或是觀察入微地打量某人。在比較一般語境中，「he clocks her」也可以指：
   　👉 他注意到了她 / 他盯著她看 / 他正在觀察她

　🔸例句翻譯：
　> “He clocks her from across the room.”
　> 「他在房間的另一頭盯著她看。」

　🔸例句： “He clocked her right in the jaw.”

「他一拳打在她下巴上。」

這兩種意思完全不同，所以要看上下文判斷。
