    Prehistoric Nomads Got God Right And Civilization Messed It Up

And for a long time the academic world told us that meant religion evolved upward — that primitive people invented spirits, those spirits became gods, and monotheism came last as the most sophisticated development. On that telling the God of the Bible is a late arrival. A regional answer. One option among many that a small ancient people eventually landed on. That story is wrong. And the evidence that contradicts it has been sitting in the anthropological and archaeological record for over a century.     Melchizedek: What Archeology Has Found So Far

In 2010, archaeologist Eli Shukron excavated a series of rock-cut chambers above the Gihon Spring in Jerusalem and found something that stopped people in their tracks: an altar platform, a drainage channel, an olive press, a standing stone, and a sealed favissa. The site dates to the 19th to 17th centuries BC. That's Abraham's century.Genesis 14 tells us a priest-king named Melchizedek walked out of a city on a hill, offered Abraham bread and wine, and blessed him in the name of El Elyon, God Most High. Abraham gave him a tithe of everything. The writer of Hebrews says that moment matters more than most Christians realize.Today we're putting Melchizedek in real time and real place -- the archaeology, the ancient Near Eastern context, and the thread that runs from a valley below Jerusalem all the way to the night someone else offered bread and wine in the same city and said this is my body, this is my blood.

But almost nobody asks the question that makes it make sense: why were they finally ready? Because the whole Old Testament is the story of God moving toward his people and his people not being able to receive him. Sinai. The wilderness. The king. The temple. The incarnation. Every time God moved close, something in them couldn't handle it. Then the cross happened. And fifty days later the fire that stayed on the mountain at Sinai came down and landed on the people themselves.
