You may have heard of this debate between Cardi B and Ben Shapiro last few weeks. Cardi B's last single WAP has stirred the pot. Ben Shapiro reacted with passion. I’m not a huge fan of either. I mean, I don’t follow them on social media or anything. And I heard about the debate from many sources. I’m one of the last people to hear about it. Now, I’m not into this kind of celebrity drama. It is entertaining at best. Time wasting at worst. I mean, there are things I agree and disagree, with both of them. Cardi B made a career out of promoting female sexual liberation with her rap music. It’s ok, that’s what sells. And she is still a mother and a wife, so good for her. But I’m not sure if I agree with her when she brags about getting men drunk and stealing their money. Ben Shapiro, the conservative podcast and radio show host. I get where he is coming from. Traditional family values are best for kids and all that. But I’m a voluntaryist not a conservative. And he says so many things that result in self-owns, even his fans roll their eyes. Anyways, this is not so much about WAP debate, but what we can learn from both of them, and apply to our lives and business. These two people are very different personalities. But they are both public figures and celebrities. And they have more in common than you may think. Here are the 3 factors that contributed to their success: 1) They are both their own unique personalities. No shame. No apologies. Both Cardi B and Ben Shapiro get a lot of criticism. People call them names, make fun of them, even hate them. And they don’t give a damn. For one, it comes with the territory. When you have millions of followers, you’ll have people that love you, and you will have people that hate you. You can’t be all things to all people. You can only be you. Another thing is that, when they are who they are, warts and all, it is an inspiration to most. Most people live lives of silent desperation. Most people have fears and insecurities that stop them from putting themselves out there. They shine their light, so that we can shine our own. 2) They are both consistent content creators. Ben Shapiro started writing at age 17. Had 2 books to his name before 21. Now at age 36, he is doing one hour podcasts daily. On radio, that is two hours with ad breaks. His podcast and radio show is one of the most popular radio shows in USA. Cardi B has become an internet celebrity, even before she made it to TV in 2015, with “Love and Hip Hop, New York”. And then came her breakthrough album “Invasion of Privacy” in 2018. And now in 2020, she released a new album, and the lead single WAP. She has 74 million followers on Instagram. She updates Instagram daily. And she has such a large and passionate following, it is amazing. She can now go shopping, buy some high-end clothes, shoes, handbags. And then if she makes a post mentioning the brands, she can make more money then she spends from ads. 3) They are both in this long term. Ben Shapiro is in this for almost 20 years now. You could argue Cardi B is famous for only 5 years. But I’d guess there is at least another 5 years of work behind the scenes before she got Internet famous. Even if you consider “only” 5 years, that’s still much longer than how long most people can focus. unfairadvantageagency.com
