Canes 'peg' 7th straight win on the Jets, 3-2

Pyotr Kochetkov made 21 saves, Mark Jankowski scored a goal in his 6th straight game, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi broke a 38-game drought with a goal as the Canes opened up the State Fair road trip with a 3-2 win over the Jets. You could say that Carolina was responsible for all 5 goals on the night as both Winnipeg tallies were at least created by poor plays in their own end. Nikolaj Ehlers gave the puck away to Mark Scheifele for the 1st Jets goal. Then Kochetkov fumbled the puck outside his crease for the 2nd. But, Carolina scored twice on the power play and got strong efforts up and down the lineup in the win. Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger-Sorum entered the chat due to injures along the forward line and each played well. Nadeau assisted on the Jankowski power play goal that got the Canes on the board in the 2nd period. Canes Corner is presented by the Aluminum Company of North Carolina. aluminumcompany.com

Canes ride Svechnikov, Kochetkov to 4-2 win over Capitals

The Carolina Hurricanes picked up their 6th straight win, 4-2, over Washington as Andrei Svechnikov produced a couple of goals and an assist and Pyotr Kochetkov turned aside 20 of 22 Capitals shots in the win. Carolina fell behind by a goal twice during the game, but over the last 32 minutes played arguably their best hockey of the young season. Eric Robinson's second goal of the year tied the game at 2-2 right before the end of the period setting the stage for Svechnikov to put the Canes ahead on the power play with a shade more than 6 minutes to play. Sebastian Aho had 2 assists on the night. Carolina played without Jordan Staal for the second straight game and then lost Taylor Hall to an upper body injury after playing just over 4 minutes. It was announced before the game that Staal would be out for 1-2 months with a partially torn calf muscle. Canes Corner is presented by the Aluminum Company of North Carolina. aluminumcompany.com

First preseason impressions in 6-3 loss in Florida

The Hurricanes lost, 6-3, in Florida. But, the night was more about how than what. And how some of the Canes young roster hopefuls played was a mixed bag. It was a strong start for Pyotr Kochetkov, but a sideways second period didn't help his confidence. It was his first game action in 9 months, so....We'll talk forwards, like Justin Robidas, Bradly Nadeau and Felix Unger Sorum. There are a couple of roster spots open on the blue line if Alexander Nikishin doesn't sign, so we get into that discussion as well.

Canes beat Flyers, 4-1, win 5th straight

Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov each had a goal and an assist and Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves for his 3rd win of the season in the Canes 4-1 win over the Flyers. Svechnikov's 4th goal of the season came midway through the second period and gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. shayne Gostisbehere's 2nd of the year, off a gorgeous pass from Aho, doubled the lead about 3 1/2 minutes later. Aho capped a 3-goal 2nd period with a quick shot off a pass from Will Carrier (2 assists). Mark Jankowski's 3rd period goal completed the scoring and was his 4th straight game with a goal -- a career high. Jordan Martinook had an assist on the Jankowski goal for the 200th point with the Hurricanes. Carolina played without Jordan Staal (lower body injury).

Canes blister Canucks, 7-2, behind Stankoven's 1st career hat trick

Logan Stankoven notched his first career NHL hat trick and Sean Walker had 4 assists as the Canes dominated the Canucks, 7-2. K'Andre Miller's goal just 78 seconds into the game was a sign of what was to come. Before the midpoint of the period Andre Svechnikov would score twice on the power play. Then, after Mark Jankowski scored his second goal in as many games to make it 4-0, Stankoven ran off three straight Canes goals for a natural hat trick and the rout was complete. Pyotr Kochetkov made 18 saves in the win. Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake and Shayne Gostisbehere each had 2 assists in the win. The Hurricanes were perfect on special teams, going 3 for 3 on the power play and killing off all 4 Vancouver chances with the man advantage -- plus, the first of Stankoven's goals came shorthanded. Canes kill off Blackhawks, 5-2

Jackson Blake had a goal and an assist and Sebastian Aho scored a shorthanded goal as the Canes beat the Blackhawks, 5-2, in Chicago. Mark Jankowski opened the scoring with just under a minute left in the opening period -- his 3rd goal in the last 3 games -- before Aho put home his 5th of the season early in the 2nd period. It was Carolina's second straight game with a shorthanded goal and gives them as many goals shorthanded (2) and they have allowed power play goals through the first 6 games. Blake followed 79 seconds later with his 1st goal of the season. Taylor Hall and Jordan Martinook would close out the scoring. Brandon Bussi, who struggled in each of his last two starts, was sharp from the start. He made 24 saves in the win and is now 2-1-1 on the season.

Canes spoil Canadiens home opener, 6-4

Sebastian Aho's 3 point night and Taylor Hall's two goals helped the Canes to a 6-4 win in Montreal as Carolina won for the second straight game. Aho now how 7 points in his last 3 games as he's scored on the power play in all three. Eric Robinson and Mark Jankowski each had a goal and an assist with the latter taking a feed from the former on the go-ahead goal in the 2nd period. Jaccob Slavin had 2 assists on the night. Brandon Bussi got his first win of the season but allowed 4 goals on 20 shots on the night. Carolina was 1 for 5 on the power play and killed off 5 of 6 Montreal man advantage situations -- including nearly 1:45 of 5-on-3 time. The Canes are 17 for 19 on the penalty kill so far this year.

Canes power past Flyers, 3-2, in overtime

Sebastian Aho scored twice and Shayne Gostisbehere's overtime power play goal helped the Canes get their first win of the season in a 3-2 win in Philadelphia. Aho's first of the game came just 10 seconds into the 1st period as the Canes led for the first time this season. His second came on a 3rd period power play that tied the game at 2-2. Then he had one of the assists on the Gostisbehere game winner. Pyotr Kochetkov made his first start since December 20 and made 16 saves in the win. Carolina looked very much like themselves for the first time, out-shooting the Flyers 40-18.

Canes, Bussi hold off Devils' late push, win 3-1

Brandon Bussi stopped 28 shots and Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist as the Hurricanes snapped their 3-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Devils in Newark. Nikolaj Ehlers scored in the opening minute as his slight deflection of a Sean Walker point shot led to a rebound and a Luke Hughes own goal. Hughes would also give up the puck to Hall for his 7th goal of the year, a forechecking classic as Hall knocked the puck off Hughes' stick and it slid past Jake Allen into the net for a 2-1 lead in the 2nd period. Hall added to his night forcing a turnover behind the New Jersey goal and getting the puck to Logan Stankoven in front for his 7th goal of the season -- and first in 11 games. Best thing we saw, though, was Brandon Bussi bouncing back in a very solid, and quiet but stellar performance in the Carolina goal.

Canes survive Sens in double overtime, 3-2

Frederik Andersen's 36 saves and Jordan Martinook's overtime heroics help the Canes survive game 2 with a 3-2 win and a 2-0 series lead. Andersen, after allowing a poor goal to Dylan Cozens in the latter portion of the 2nd period that tied the game at 2, became the man who shut the door on Ottawa on Saturday afternoon. Twenty two saves later, Freddie is 2-0 in the playoffs and the Canes can sleep a little better with a 2-game lead. Martinook, who had a penalty shot saved by Linus Ullmark in the 1st overtime, buried his 1st of the playoffs, 13:53 into the 5th period to send the Caniacs home happy. Mark Jankowski thought he'd won it the previous period, but the goal was wiped out for being offside. The ruling was that Jordan Staal lost control of the puck as he brought it into the offensive zone which made Martinook offside on the play. Even though -- on that play -- Warren Foegele hooked his former teammate which led to a penalty shot. Though, Martinook failed to convert it. Logan Stankoven scored on the power play and Sebastian Aho scored one second after an Ottawa power play expired for the other two goals.
