Gridlock in the U.S. Housing Market

The housing market in the United States is in gridlock these days, largely because of high interest rates. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate is now above 7 percent, making it difficult for would-be first-time buyers to get into the market. Adam and Cameron discuss the broader implications for the U.S. economy. Also on the show: Brazil’s presidential election Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Francis Fukuyama

Adam and Cameron discuss the newly released memoir of Francis Fukuyama, the American political scientist whose influential paper in 1989—which was later expanded into a book—posited that liberal democracy had won the world's ideological battle. The thesis was heralded as prescient when the Berlin wall fell a short time later but has been subjected to much criticism over the years. In the memoir, In the Realm of the Last Man, Fukuyama sets out to account for events that have transpired since 1989. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

ProHuman Institutions

Right now, we’re all living through a grand experiment. The rise of artificial intelligence promises to profoundly impact humanity. While conversations about AI are often focused on technical issues, this transformative technology will shape all aspects of society. The question facing world leaders has been asked before: How do we govern a technology powerful enough to threaten civilization itself? In this episode, Beatrice Fihn, the director of Lex International and a senior fellow at the U.N.’s Institute for Disarmament Research, explains why nuclear technology can be a useful analogy for artificial intelligence. Then, our featured host, former Irish President Mary Robinson, speaks with global governance expert Julia Morse about the landscape of international institutions that address global AI governance and what new ways of thinking may be on the horizon. ProHuman: Governing the Global AI Revolution is a co-production of Foreign Policy and the Future of Life Institute. Mary Robinson and all of our featured hosts are members of The Elders. Julia Morse founded the Politics of AI Governance Lab at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Beatrice Fihn was the executive director of ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, when the organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz has become one of the Trump administration’s most visible spokespeople, publicly explaining and defending its policies on everything from Iran to Venezuela and Sudan. AI Regulation

The head of Anthropic last week called on the U.S. government to regulate AI companies to avoid catastrophic outcomes. But, as Adam and Cameron point out, the conversation itself raises broader questions about the structure of the AI marketplace, the efficacy of existing liability laws, and the very nature of capitalism. How to Create a Billion Jobs

Ajay Banga has a simple north star as he runs the World Bank: jobs, jobs, jobs. And for good reason. The World Bank estimates that developing countries are on track to create only a third of the approximately 1.2 billion jobs they will need to keep up with demand. How can countries and companies bridge this gap? Banga sat down with FP’s Ravi Agrawal to detail how the bank is mobilizing private capital and working with governments to create sustainable jobs. The Gulf’s Postwar Playbook

Gulf countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have created entire cities and world-class airlines off the back of energy riches and U.S. security. The Iran war has upended the calculations of the Gulf monarchs. How are they rethinking their strategies? Can the U.S. and China Build a Stable Relationship?

This week, Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Washington to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. Trade, technology, and Taiwan are all expected to be on the agenda. It’s the two leaders’ second meeting in less than six months, as they try to stabilize the future of U.S.-China relations. Many fear tensions are brewing, but with their tariff war in the past, could it be possible for the world's two biggest economies to work together? Welcome to Counterpoint, where we take one big question facing world leaders and look at it from opposing points of view. In this episode, we’re asking: Can the United States and China build a stable relationship? Arguing in favor is Jessica Chen Weiss, a professor of China studies at Johns Hopkins University and a former senior advisor at the U.S. State Department. Arguing against it is Zack Cooper, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he studies U.S. strategy in Asia and U.S.-China competition. He is also a former staffer at the U.S. National Security Council. Counterpoint is a production of Foreign Policy, in partnership with the Doha Forum. The show is hosted by FP deputy editor Nick Danforth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
