Wearing shoes in the house, birthday treats at school & is it ever OK to lie to your kids?!

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!!! We recorded this episode the night before heading out to DC and instead of our usual, we decided to do a little game: we picked a bunch of parenting hot takes & "would you rather" questions to answer rapid-fire, and yes we were all a little slap happy LOL. PSA UPFRONT: we talk about Santa in this episode around 20 minutes in… please do not listen in front of your kids!!! OK let's get into it: A few we cannot stop thinking about: is it ever OK to lie to your kids?! (Santa, tooth fairy, "the iPad only exists on the airplane" lies…), are iPads the modern day cigarette?! (YES), should schools ban birthday treats?! (no), should toddlers actually be expected to share?! (yes!!!), and the great household debate: shoes on or shoes off in the house?! (Harrison is CANADIAN and yet still on Team Shoes On somehow??). Plus, we get into some wild parenting advice from the 1930s-1960s (mothers were told don't breastfeed if you're angry?! Doctors recommended cigarettes during pregnancy?! Don't hug your baby too much or you'll create a tyrant??) that made us wonder what advice we're getting today that we'll think is crazy in 100 years. Plus, pacifiers after age 2 (yes or no?), and the true or false round: is the second kid actually rules-free? Was parenting easier before Instagram? Do parents secretly love when plans get canceled? And of course, Harrison walks us through 100 years of stock market data to kick things off (cliffhanger from last ep!! lol)… 30,000 stocks analyzed over 100 years, and only 27.6% outperformed the market. His case for index funds continues!! 📈 LOVE YOU GUYS! Ep. 3 - The Dad Bod Theory (with Lee Gettler)

Why would evolution redesign a man's body after he has children? Anthropologist Lee Gettler helped uncover a surprising answer. His research on hormone changes including testosterone suggests that fatherhood doesn't just change how men think and feel, it changes their biology too. Shownotes:  Lee’s landmark study Longitudinal Evidence that Fatherhood Decreases Testosterone in Human Males showed that men's testosterone levels decline after becoming fathers, helping reshape our understanding of paternal biology. The Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey (CLHNS) is one of the world's longest-running birth cohort studies, following thousands of families in the Philippines. Many of Lee's landmark findings on fatherhood are based on this dataset.Ruth Feldman's pioneering research on oxytocin, caregiving and parent–infant bonding is discussed during the episode.Explore Lee Gettler's research on fatherhood, hormones and human development. This podcast is part of the Early Childhood Matters platform by the Van Leer Foundation. How Rob Sitch Dads

Rob Sitch is not only a prolific creator of some of Australia's most beloved comedy characters, TV shows and films, he is also one of the very first friends that Hamish got to see dadding up close.  Many years ago, backstage on Thank God You Are Here, and well before his own dadding journey started, Hamish started talking to Rob about his philosophies on being a parent, and so it is only fitting that Rob is on the first episode of How Other Dads Dad.   A father of 5 with 21 years of parenting under his belt, Rob shares with Hame some of his hard-earned wisdom, they discuss the things that kids never don't love, and Rob shares how parts of his own childhood inspired the now legendary Aussie Dad - Darryl Kerrigan from The Castle. Great Dads Are Made, Not Born: The Neuroscience of Fatherhood

When a woman becomes a mother, her brain physically reorganizes around the baby. We've known this for a while. What we didn't know (until recently) is that the same thing happens to dads. Dr. Darby Saxbe is a neuroscientist and psychologist at USC, and one of the only researchers in the world scanning fathers' brains before and after they have kids. What she found: the same regions that change and streamline in new mothers change in new fathers. The more hands-on a dad is, the more pronounced those changes are. Dr. Becky and Dr. Darby get into what "losing gray matter" actually means (it's not what it sounds like), how paternal postpartum depression shows up differently than maternal (and why it almost always goes unrecognized), and why the awkwardness of new fatherhood isn't a signal that you're wrong for the role. Dr. Saxbe's new book is Dad Brain. * Thank you to our partners for making this episode possible: Skylight: Get $30 off a 15-inch Skylight Calendar at myskylight.com/becky LMNT: Get a free gift with your purchase at drinkLMNT.com/goodinside Girl Scouts: If you have a daughter in kindergarten through 12th grade, visit girlscouts.org to learn more Little Spoon: Get 50% off your first order at littlespoon.com/rattled with code RATTLED Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. When Depression Doesn't Look Like Depression

What does depression look like? It’s not always… sadness. It can be anger. Irritability. Picking fights. Checking out. Taking risks that don't make sense. It can look, to everyone around you — including you — like a character problem, not a medical condition. Christopher Choukalas is an ICU physician at UCSF. Six months after his twin daughters were born, he had every symptom on the paternal postpartum depression list. He had no idea. In this episode, Dr. Becky and Dr. Choukalas go through the symptom list live — and talk about why this form of depression is so easy to miss, what it costs the whole family when it goes unnamed, and what getting help actually looked like for one father who needed it badly. Christopher G. Choukalas, MD, MS is the author of Even the Darkest Night: A Father's Journey of Hope and Healing from Paternal Depression. * Thank you to our partners for making this episode possible: SmartyPants: Shop SmartyPants Vitamins at Target, Walmart, or Amazon today LMNT: Get a free gift with your purchase at drinkLMNT.com/goodinside Girl Scouts: If you have a daughter in kindergarten through 12th grade, visit girlscouts.org to learn more Little Spoon: Get 50% off your first order at littlespoon.com/rattled with code RATTLED Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Scary Things Kids Need to Tell Us

A parent is shaken when her five-year-old begins talking about death and saying she wants to die. Is this a warning sign? Shouldn't she be alarmed? Janet explains why these frightening statements—while they should always be taken seriously—are often very different from what parents fear, and why our instinct to reassure, explain, or shut the conversation down can unintentionally make things worse. She shares a compassionate approach that helps children feel safe enough to work through even their most unsettling thoughts.
