    Nights' Dan Slevin, is one of the best film reviewers in any medium, consistently convincing, insightful, unpretentious, perceptive, thoughtful and articulate. He joins us every Friday night, and here's what's caught his eye this week. Nights' resident screen critic Dan Slevin joins Susana Lei'ataua to review: IN CINEMAS Kiki’s Delivery Service (directed by Hayao Miyazaki, 1989). Returning to cinemas - IMAX in fact - is one of Studio Ghibli’s most beloved animated films. Kiki is a witch and the rules say that when you get to 13-years-old, you have to go out on your own. With her spirit animal (a black cat named Jiji) she tries to make a life helping other people but soon discovers that independence is not all it's cracked up to be. PAID STREAMING - HBO Max Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! (Directed by Judd Apatow, 2025). This week was the one hundredth birthday of comedian and filmmaker Mel Brooks. This two-part documentary was made to celebrate his 99th and riffs on one of his earliest TV characters, The 2000 Year Old Man, featuring appearances from friends Carl Reiner (and son Rob Reiner, both now gone), Ben Stiller, Conan O’Brien, Jerry Seinfeld and Patton Oswalt. FREE STREAMING - Three Now Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (directed by Mel Stuart, 1971). Nights' resident screen critic Dan Slevin joins Susana Lei'ataua to review: IN CINEMAS Supergirl (directed by Craig Gillespie). New addition to James Gunn’s DC Comics cinematic universe, Australian Milly Alcock plays Superman’s cousin, Kara. Unlike Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman, Kara arrived on Earth as a teenager and is experiencing all the alienation and grief that results from being separated from her parents and community. When her only companion, Krypton the superdog, is poisoned by Brgands, she has to learn how to use her powers to save him - and another orphan (Eve Ridley) with revenge on her mind. PAID STREAMING - Netflix One Hundred Years of Solitude (directed by Alex García López and Laura Mora, 2024-26). An epic adaptation of the legendary magical realist 1967 novel by Gabriel García Márquez, this is the biggest film or television production to come out of Colombia. A multigenerational story of a family and a town against the background of the sweeping social and political changes in Latin America across the second half of the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th. FREE STREAMING - TVNZ+ and ThreeNow Would I Lie to You (2007). Now in its 19th season, this is a hit British comedy panel show where celebrity guests share unbelievable stories, as panellists attempt to separate truth from lies.     Short-Cuts with Dan Slevin: Glenrothan, Devs and The Way

    Dan Slevin reviews Glenrothan, Brian Cox's directorial debut, about two estranged brothers and a whisky distillery. Devs, a cerebral sci-fi series about a tech company trying to predict the future. The Way, Martin Sheen’s emotional Camino pilgrimage drama, back for its 15th anniversary Nights' resident screen critic Dan Slevin joins Emile Donovan to review: IN CINEMAS Glenrothan (dir. Brian Cox). This is the first feature to be directed by Brian Cox, star of Succession, and it is the story of two estranged brothers and their family whisky distillery. Cox plays the older brother, and the jazz musician younger brother is played by Alan Cumming (who is also one of the stars of Schmigadoon!). PAID STREAMING - Neon Devs (written and directed by Alex Garland). This eight-episode cerebral sci-fi series was originally on Hulu in the US in 2020 but never on a local streamer until now. Nick Offerman plays the CEO of a mysterious quantum computing company that intends to use its prodigious computing power to predict the future and rewrite the past. FREE STREAMING - Brollie The Way (dir. Emilio Estevez, 2010). The film is back in cinemas this weekend to commemorate the 15th anniversary of its release, but it's also streaming for free on Brollie. Martin Sheen plays a grieving father determined to complete the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage carrying the ashes of his dead son. The first and best of the (many) Camino films.
