I analyzed 223 consecutive trip offers over a slow Wednesday afternoon in Syracuse (no surges), screenshotting every offer and estimating costs at about $0.30/mile to calculate profitability. The average fare was about $8 (median $7), average trip about 20 minutes and 8 miles, with estimated profit averaging $16.94 per active hour; only 126 trips beat $16/hour, while 97 were below. The top quartile averaged $24.21/hour vs. $12.06/hour for the bottom quartile, and multi-stop trips paid the least. I also model outcomes for taking all trips versus selective criteria using GigU and share advice on knowing costs, prioritizing short pickups, ignoring badges as primary signals, tracking online time, and considering multi-apping.

    What Happens When Nobody Opens the Uber App?

    Uber’s Biggest Threat Isn’t Robotaxis—It’s AI Agents That Shop Rides for UsI share what I think could become Uber’s biggest problem: not Waymo or robotaxis, but a future where people don’t open the Uber app at all because Apple Maps, Siri, or AI agents like Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, or others can shop and negotiate rides automatically. After a confusing airport trip where the passenger paid $67 and I earned $24 with neither of us understanding the pricing, I argue Uber’s advantage comes from algorithmic pricing and asymmetric information. But as AI tools gain access to pricing across Uber, Lyft, Waymo, taxis, and even private services, that arbitrage may disappear. I explore what Uber’s future value could be—doubling down on human drivers and professionalism, or becoming transportation “plumbing” by licensing its marketplace and algorithms—while noting Uber works well today even if drivers feel little loyalty.
