    This story is based on my starting school in 1942, with the help of Google Gemini which brought back lots of memories of my early days at school, i would like to point out that blackout curtains were used only when school lights were switched on, also that all windows were taped in a diamond pattern as this reduced the effect of glass shattering if blown in by explosion, the blackout and taping were also compulsive requitement at home. The local home guard were responsible to ensure no light was emitted at all times especial if sirens were sounding.

    Carpet and Rug making using old clothing in 1940/50s

    During and shortly after the WII there was a shortage on many items, carpets and rugs was one of them especially if money was on short supply, it was during this period that my mother often used to make carpets and rugs out of old clothing which was cut into short stripes and using what we called a progger (piece of wood with a sharpened point would force the cut material though hessian sacking.
