Superfreak

Mary Ryan Brown

A storytelling project from comedian, writer, wife, and mother Mary Ryan Brown, Superfreak features comedian and artist interviews, audience questions, and guest appearances from the big personalities in Mary Ryan’s life. Mary Ryan Brown is a former gifted kid who is still trying to navigate burnout while enjoying her ordinary life in South Mississippi. She lives within and without the carnival of the Deep South—trashy enough to love a bologna sandwich, but stuck-up enough to correct a UPS driver’s grammar. She considers herself an outsider passing as an insider—a murmuring pigeon lady masquerading as a country club mom. This unique perspective, she thinks, makes Mary Ryan a worthy conversation partner and interviewer. Then again, she has been known to indulge in delusions of grandeur. Superfreak is all about the joy of uninhibited performance. A tribute to the Rick James song “Superfreak” and the 2007 film Little Miss Sunshine (Mary Ryan’s favorite), the podcast’s title owns the label of ‘outsider.’ Mary Ryan—who wears many different hats as wife, mom, writer, and comedian—aims to explore the unique challenge of balancing family, work, and the pursuit of impossible dreams. What happens when we show up, talk back to our fears, and give every ounce of effort to the present moment and the people with whom we share it? Or, as Mary Ryan’s mom would say, what happens when we show up and screech, “I ain’t skeerd!” Expect the absurd. Expect Southern accents. Expect big questions and bigger surprises. This is Superfreak with Mary Ryan Brown.

    Viral Car Salesman Doug Townson

Doug Townson is a car salesman from Watson, Louisiana. He has gained a massive following for his humorous videos and commentaries, many of which involve or discuss women. I find Doug fascinating in all his brutal weirdness, and, on a whim, I reached out to him to see if he would be willing to do a Superfreak interview. Surprisingly, he obliged. I hope you find the following podcast episode as entertaining and surprisingly heartwarming as I did. Doug has some whack opinions, but I believe his honesty and self-reflection will inspire the same qualities in listeners. You’ve never met anyone like Doug—unless you’ve been to rehab as many times as he has. I enjoyed this interview through all its twists and turns. Remember: Doug’s opinions are Doug’s. I was channeling Terry Gross and trying to ask engaging questions in service of a greater story—and I think we got at least the beginning of that story. Doug, you’re a legend. And possibly a tall tale. Love and respect, my friend. Come holla! Entrepreneur and Mindset Coach Jesi Stracham

Jesi Stracham is a wheelchair athlete on a mission to inspire the world to live life to its fullest. In January 2015, Jesi was the passenger on a motorcycle when it collided with a car. She woke up a week later in an intensive care unit without the use of her legs secondary to a spinal cord injury. Instead of accepting disability as her reality, In the face of adversity, she has used her disability as a platform to reach the world. In the years since her injury, Jesi has been able to achieve more than she had previously dreamed possible. To name just a few accomplishments, she has developed the first fitness application created by wheelchair users for wheelchair users and founded a non-profit called Wheel With Me Foundation that aims to serve the independence of wheelchair users. Jesi believes the importance of working to achieve personal excellence is crucial to anyone's success, happiness, and mental well being, regardless of their ability. With the help of various influences, Jesi has developed a system that has allowed her to live a life she previously didn’t believe was possible. Jesi's is “life-support” coach who helps individuals reach their dreams and fullest potential. Her book Power In The Roll will be available later this year. Audio Note: Jesi's audio is perfect. Mine is very bad. I am working on improving my audio, so thank you, listeners, for bearing with me! _________________________________________________________________________ FRIDAY, AUGUST 2: Ben Compton's Special Taping in Hattiesburg, MS SUNDAY, AUGUST 4: Harahan, LA SATURDAY, AUGUST 10: Opener, Caroline Picard in Bay St. Louis, MS
