    Bananas and The Butter Cut

The Mask & The Mic Podcast | Episode 8: Bananas & The Butter Cut From celebrity golf fairways to Banana Ball chaos… this episode has it all. In Episode 8 of The Mask & The Mic, Guy Hebert and Kent French recap a pair of unforgettable weekends — each filled with unique experiences, big personalities, and a few moments you can’t make up. Guy takes us inside the Pacific Life Celebrity Classic, the marquee kickoff to Hoag Classic week, where over 70 professional athletes and celebrities come together for a one-day charity tournament supporting the Hoag Hospital Foundation. Paired with former Ducks goaltender Ryan Miller, Guy shares what it was like walking the fairways, engaging with fans, and teeing it up alongside icons — including NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice. And yes… we break down the “butter cut” — that perfectly struck fade off the first tee. Meanwhile, Kent heads south to Petco Park with his family for their first experience with the Savannah Bananas — and quickly discovers that Banana Ball is more than a game… it’s a full-blown phenomenon. From nonstop entertainment to fan interaction and on-field antics, Kent recaps the energy and magic that’s redefining what a baseball experience can be. To close the episode, Guy shares a special update on his alma mater, Hamilton College, as the Continentals men’s hockey team heads to the Division III Frozen Four for the first time in program history — a moment worth celebrating. Two different worlds. One great conversation. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel

    Party in the USA!

Hosts Guy Hebert ("GI Bear," former NHL goaltender) and longtime broadcaster Kent French open an episode of The Mask and the Mic without a guest to recap USA Hockey’s Olympic success, with both the men’s and women’s teams winning gold in dramatic overtime finishes against Canada. They also share personal updates: French describes participating in the "Duke of Orange" talent show (earning a podium finish) with a magic/comedy act and an Elvis "Jailhouse Rock" lip sync, while Hebert recounts a Valentine’s/birthday trip to New York City with his wife to visit their daughter and narrowly flying out before an East Coast blizzard. The hosts discuss a Green Cheek Beer watch event in Orange and Hebert’s history with Team USA, including the 1996 World Cup of Hockey win (beating Canada in Montreal), his 1990 Goodwill Games experience, and wearing his 1998 Nagano Olympic jersey from the first Olympics that included NHL players. Hebert explains the impact of former teammates such as Bill Guerin (Team USA GM) and Keith Tkachuk through Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, emphasizing Guerin’s roster blueprint focused on grit, defense, and special teams over top goal scorers. They analyze goaltending in the men’s final, highlighting Connor Hellebuyck’s key paddle save, comparisons to Mike Richter’s 1996 play, and Jordan Binnington’s strong performance, with discussion of Hellebuyck’s past playoff questions and potential benefits going forward. They reflect on the emotion of Team USA honoring Johnny Gaudreau by keeping his jersey in the locker room and skating with it after the win, with his family and children on the ice. The women’s team’s dominance is celebrated, including a 33–2 overall goal differential, standout performances from Hillary Knight, Kendall Coyne Schofield, and goalie Aerin Frankel, and a highlighted Megan Keller play. The episode closes with optimism about the future of USA Hockey and mentions that Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in Baltimore offered members of both 2026 USA gold medal teams a lifetime supply of crab cakes, along with where to find the podcast on YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. A Gubie Wednesday!

Episode three of The Mask and the Mic reunites former NHL goaltender Guy Hebert and broadcaster Kent French as they welcome former MLB pitcher and longtime Angels broadcaster Mark Gubicza. Gubicza discusses growing up in Philadelphia playing multiple sports, including hockey and grade-school boxing, and how baseball became his focus through his father’s minor-league background and his brothers’ influence. He recalls playing shortstop and later moving positions, his approach to pitching and hitting, and how familiarity between teammates affects matchups, including how All-Star weekends can soften a player’s “edge.” Gubicza shares All-Star memories, including striking out Hall of Famer Gary Carter and later learning it was Carter’s only All-Star strikeout, and names Don Mattingly as the toughest hitter he faced. He describes struggling at Detroit’s Tiger Stadium and praises the 1984 Tigers as the best team he saw. He tells stories about his intense on-mound competitiveness, confrontations with hitters, and nearly tackling a runner after a late home run, plus trying to return quickly from shoulder surgery for the Angels. The conversation covers changes in athlete preparation and injury management, pitchers today with a similar competitive mindset, and Gubicza’s unexpected path into broadcasting through auditions that led to Fox Sports and a long career, emphasizing giving viewers insight beyond what they see. He highlights memorable broadcast moments, including milestones by Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, Shohei Ohtani’s pitching and hitting feats, and the combined no-hitter honoring Tyler Skaggs, as well as the challenges of covering tragedies like Skaggs’ death, Nick Adenhart’s passing, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere’s bench collapse. Gubicza also describes the thrill of broadcasting between the benches at an NHL game, the speed and physicality of hockey, and his admiration for hockey players and the Miracle on Ice.
