    Top 3 Millennial Negro Spirituals

    As we close out Black Music Month in our season finale, we honor the modern versions of negro spirituals showcased by some millennial hip hop classics. You can't tell me that the beginning of "Swag Surfin" isn't an altar call to get close to your friends and place your arms around each others shoulders as ya sway in unison, or that "Wipe Me Down" isn't a confidence booster for the person in the middle of the club as strangers circle up to wipe down their shoulders, chest, pants, shoes and don't even get me started about if "Knuck If You Buck" would have been the anthem to African resistance to enslavement. Listen all the way through to hear more about a bonus song by Kendrick Lamar that had everyone feeling like everything was going to be alright no matter how down we feel.     Texas was the last state of the Confederacy in which enslaved Black people officially gained their freedom. June 19th, 1865 is that historic day. Black folks in Kentucky and Delaware were not declared free until December of 1865… months after what we know as Juneteenth.  Are we still free today? Those of us who have these father wounds tend to struggle with trust, fear of abandonment, jealousy, and possessiveness in romantic relationships.     Healing Through a Black Mother's Love

    "I am convinced that the hardships that exist between a Black mother and daughter are based on survival as well as oppression. History shows that Black mothers have had to make countless sacrifices to ensure their own survival as well as their daughters. The abuse they faced trickled down to us and as they teach us to survive in a world that disregards and dehumanized us, an act of oppression occurs that supersedes tenderness, acceptance and support. Black mothers can get so caught up with trying to prepare us for the cold world that they in turn become frozen with their daughters.
