The Trial+: Accident or Abuse? - The Final Evidence

As jurors begin deliberating in the trial of Janice Nix, Caroline and Ryan look at the final days of evidence in a case that stretches back almost 50 years. Nix denies manslaughter and child cruelty allegations linked to the death of five-year-old Andrea Bernard, who suffered fatal scalding injuries in South London in 1978. The court has heard claims from Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard, that the injuries were part of a wider pattern of abuse; allegations Nix strongly denies. In this episode, we examine the key moments from Nix’s evidence and the prosecution’s challenges to her account, as the jury decide whether Andrea’s death was a tragic accident or part of a cycle of abuse. The Tragic Life Of Preston Davey: “Frozen Watchfulness”

In this episode Caroline and Liz have the evidence from a doctor who said in some of the videos on Jamie Varley’s phone, Preston Davey was in life threatening situations. Dr Jo Gifford, an expert in child sex abuse, said Preston showed signs of being mistreated and abused, and there was footage of him before he died which showed several “near misses.”  We also have the evidence from Preston’s foster mum Sandra Cooper who came into court to refute Jamie Varley’s suggestion that the reason Preston was pictured and filmed naked was because she had advised he should be allowed “free willy time.” She said it was categorically untrue and she would view it as a big safeguarding issue. The Trial+: Accident or Abuse? - The Trial of Janice Nix

Nearly five decades after the death of five-year-old Andrea Bernard was ruled a tragic accident, a courtroom is now re-examining what happened behind closed doors in a South London home. In this episode, Caroline is joined by Ryan Hooper to explore the case of Janice Nix, who is accused of manslaughter and child cruelty over allegations dating back to 1978. At the heart of the prosecution case is Andrea’s older brother, Desmond, who came forward in 2022 claiming the scalding bath that killed his sister was not an accident, but part of a wider campaign of abuse. Janice Nix, now 67, denies all charges and allegations of abuse, and just yesterday entered the witness box to defend herself. 4. The Tragic Life Of Preston Davey: Was Preston bitten and abused?

    15 MAY

The Tragic Life Of Preston Davey: Was Preston bitten and abused?

In this episode Caroline and Liz have the medical evidence which the jury were told were consistent with Preston Davey being bitten and sexually assaulted before he died. A pathologist with 40 years experience said she found evidence that he could have been smothered or he may have died from having something forced into his mouth. She also said he suffered bruises which were not accidental. Preston was 13 months old when he died within four months of being in the care of Jamie Varley and John McGowan Fazakerley who were in the process of adopting him. The prosecution say he was abused and murdered.  Subscribe via thecrimedesk.com Follow us on TikTok @DailyMailCrime Email us thetrial@dailymail.com WhatsApp us +447796657512 (start your message with ‘Trial’)   Presenter: Caroline Cheetham and Liz Hull Producer: Chelsey Ranore Editor: Chelsey Ranore Creative Director: Caroline Cheetham Production Manager: Vittoria Cecchini   A Daily Mail production.
