REBUILD Your Confidence as an Injured Musician!

One of the cool benefits I have with the podcast is sharing what I am learning in my masters program in real time! One of the key theories and concepts in confidence building for performers is self efficacy. Self Efficacy (coined by Dr Albert Bandura) is one's belief in their ability to complete a task. No one who has gone through an injury needs to be reminded of how their confidence took a huge hit after their injury. In this episode I talk about key ways that have helped me rebuild my self confidence, as well as ways that can help you regain your confidence as you navigate recovery! Don't Worry, Be POSITIVE! Injury Recovery Tips from Trumpeter and Content Creator Josh Rzepka

Sometimes the best tool we have against adversity is our own attitude. Viktor Frankl, who survived the Holocaust, once said "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." In today's episode I talk with Josh Rzepka, trumpeter, educator, and content creator, about the experiences he has had with injury throughout his career. And yeah, there have been a few of them. He shares what these experiences taught him about leaning on his community, his teachers, and fellow musicians who have experienced injury. About how important it is for educators to make sure their students are getting credible information about technique online (I'm looking at YOU, trumpeters!) And how at the end of the day, one of the greatest tools we have for teaching is positive reinforcement coupled with constructive feedback. Keep on keepin' on! Musician: DON'T Fall for These TRAPS!

This week we hit another Research and Development episode and this one confirmed everything I have been talking about for the last couple years. A couple of European researchers (link below) sought out to determine if there were certain psychological risk factors for overuse injuries in athletes (insert musician there) They measured perfectionistic tendencies, perfectionistic strivings (watch to find out the difference), athletic identity, and coach-athlete relationship. What they found out was that the athletes that experienced overuse injuries the most were those who scored higher in 3 out of 4 of these categories! This study confirmed the mission of Musician Unchained and the Trust the Process Podcast – to provide resources to strengthen musicians against these types of factors! Keep on keepin' on! Imagine having a normal day with your family, and you get a call: "you have a brain tumor" As a musician, and more importantly, as a human, that would rock your world. And how she was able to eventually return to the stage and play music that had helped her through her recovery. Many of you have reached out to me asking to have some on the show who may not have gone through a performance injury, but instead have had a health challenge that affected your ability to play Amy and I sincerely hope that her story brings you some hope and healing through your recovery journey! The Freelance Musician Dilemma Explained (and its SOLUTION!) with Tenor Joshua Owen Mills

APOLOGIES to my audio podcast friends! for some reason, last week's episode did not publish on the audio platforms! Social media can really bring people together! Today I share my conversation with Welsh tenor Joshua Owen Mills, whom I met through Instagram! He shares his experience as a freelance opera singer, and how a devastating illness taught him one thing: financial preparedness Freelancers often do not get the benefit of insurance, or of sick leave. What you make is what you get, and if you don't gig, you don't eat! So what do we do when an injury or illness sidelines us? Joshua shares some strategies to help you prepare for that inevitable rainy day. Because here's the thing: at the end of the day, you need to be able to make objective decisions about your health. Too many musicians put off taking care of their health because of financial pressures. Joshua and I agree: we may not have ALL the answers But we hope that our conversation today helps you to take steps to put your health needs first through financial preparedness! Keep on keepin' on!
