    Sometimes the best conversations happen at the spur of the moment. When my original appearance on another creator’s Substack podcast needed to be rescheduled, I immediately texted Jess, The Creator to see if she wanted to go live with me once again. The result was this incredible, impromptu episode of Typing It Real. People seem to like Jess and I together, and she now holds the record for most all-time appearances on the podcast at three.     Typing It Real: Finding Your Way on Substack, Gen X Lessons, Music & What Really Matters With John Rinaldo

    It was so much fun sitting down with John Rinaldo © to talk about three of my favorite things: Building community on Substack; growing up Gen X/Xennial; and music! John and I discussed the following: * Our first interactions on Substack about one year ago (shoutout to Traci Edwards Let’s Get UnStuck for bringing us together!) * What John’s publication THE POSITIVE PEN is all about, and how it evolved since John first joined Substack in 2019 * What is The Pen Library and how does John bring independent authors together? * Growing up Gen X and becoming The Middle Children of History, which really spoke to me as a later Gen X / Xennial kid. I honestly think growing up Gen X enabled me to handle caregiving for my son Bray Bray today because of all the ways I have to be resourceful and self-reliant but still communicate effectively when it matters most as an advocate and a fighter for his care. * Our connections to music as Gen X/Xennial kids who grew up in an era of tangible albums, vinyl records, cassettes, and CDs. And our shared love of Columbia House! (If you know, you know!!) * Our Substack journeys and how we both fell into roles as connectors and community-builders. For me, it’s an about helping other caregivers feel less alone and sharing Bray Bray’s story as his dad and witness through my poems and memoir-style pieces. This means the world to me and my co-editor Jeannie Ewing as we are hoping to give other caregivers a voice and help them feel seen in the literary space!     Typing It Real: Talking Music, Motherhood & 6:04 Daydreams with Singer/Songwriter Becca Roth

    Welcome to a new episode of Typing It Real, which is now available in podcast form! I’ve been very blessed to have so many authentic conversations and interactions with real people on Substack during my first year on this incredible platform. As I enter this next chapter, I was thrilled to speak with singer/songwriter Becca Roth about music, motherhood, and why it’s better to “leave the mistakes in.” Becca’s new single “Supposed To Be” is being released next week on September 3rd, and stay tuned for her new album Birthday Tears to come in November! During our conversation, we talked about one of the most amazing collaborations I’ve been a part of, not just on Substack but in life. When I posted my poem 6:04 Daydreams on my Notes feed a few months ago, Becca responded and said she really liked the lyrical flow of the poem. I then replied and asked Becca if she wanted to turn my poem into an original song. Fast forward to now, and during today’s conversation, I thought it would be a real treat for me to read 6:04 Daydreams and then have Becca sing the song live. This way, listeners can hear my original spoken word version of the poem, followed by Becca’s fantastic interpretation. It was a real gift to see and hear Becca sing live, and I am truly honored that she decided to grace us with her guitar and vocal prowess. What I love about conversations like these is that they aren’t overproduced and perfectly polished. Instead, we are simply being present, living in the moment, and enjoying each other’s company while learning about each other. In the age of AI, we need conversations like these — and singer/songwriters like Becca Roth — more than ever. Thank you Becca!     The Hardest Thing to Say: Why Asking for Help Feels Impossible

    Dear Dr. Ellie Hambly, Thank you for having me on as your guest on Substack Live. And thank you for allowing this raw and vulnerable discussion about asking for help and why it’s so hard to do so when most caregivers like me are always in “go mode” without the luxury of a nervous system reset. My goal is to help other caregivers feel like they can have permission to ask for help. So many of us are underwater and I know from personal experience that it’s not easy to request a lifeboat.
