Gunn Vs Gillespie? July 4th Box Office & Sony Deals a Deadly Blow to Physical Media

DCU Infighting on Supergirl? A Sleepy July Fourth Box Office and Sony Deals a Deadly Blow to Physical Media. All that and more coming up right after this. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. Five Star Review: Facebook Group comment from Oliver Griffin: I’ve listened to every episode since the beginning, one of my absolute favourite podcasts.  Disagreements Over Supergirl Some questions of the failure of Supergirl at the box office may be getting answered, as The Hollywood Reporter learned last week about creative disputes between the studio and director Craig Gillespie with one insider saying “they were not creatively aligned.” While other insiders dispute this claim, the news does nothing to help the DCU’s second feature film’s outing. Other reports say the filmmakers knew last fall that the movie wasn’t hitting its marks yet and James Gunn brought writer Jeremy Slater in to work on some reshoots. Slater wrote The Authority for DC under Gunn, a film that is now no longer being made. According to The Hollywood Reporter, music was one of the main issues of friction - especially the use of the cover of The Middle; apparently Gunn wanted Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Ultimately, two cuts of the film were tested - one by the studio and one by Gillespie - and the studio’s film is what was released. There’s a lot of nuance and likely unknown information, but given what we do know - is the DCU ship steering the right course right now?Jay Box Office Slowdown  While heavy hitters Toy Story 5, Michael, Obsession, and The Backrooms, are still steady at the box office, new releases seem to be struggling to stay even on par with predictions. Illumination’s Minions & Monsters all but failed in the states, garnering only $37 million but looking ok with oversea ticket sales. Supergirl has barely crossed the $100 million mark. Both films look to struggle even more with Disney’s live-action Moana getting ready to premiere, as well as Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, hotly followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Is the Fourth of July weekend too hot for movies in cool theaters to do well?Hayley Physical Media Meltdown The downfall of physical media continues with an announcement from Sony: in January 2028 game disc production for all newly-released PlayStation console games will be discontinued. While this certainly follows a trend we’ve been seeing over the last few years in regards to physical media, there’s an expected backlash that comes with this major statement. Though Sony points to consumer preferences with facts as the cause for this decision, there’s certainly a population still desiring the physical versions of games. The pros and cons also include smaller developers having more opportunity, but data space being sacrificed. Supergirl Struggles, DC Announces Animation, and Eggers’ Werwulf Trailer

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. Supergirl, the DCU’s second film, hit theaters last weekend and its likelihood to turn a profit is already an uphill battle. The film, which stars Milly Alcock in the title role, and was directed by Craig Gillespie, of I, Tonya fame, raked in a cumulative $68 million at the worldwide box office. With a reported budget of $170–186 million, the film needs to earn upward of $300 million just to break even. Compounding those figures, the movie currently holds a 54% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- Cinemascore with audiences.    The 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival took place last week and with it came announcements for a bevy of animated films and series.  DC and Warner Bros Animation particularly stood out for a number of upcoming Batman projects. The first is a series adaptation of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s best-selling comic series, Absolute Batman, which Warner Bros Animation is partnering with DC Studios to develop. Joker: Laughing Riot was also announced as an adult anime series that explores the Joker in a world where Batman has been killed and will be directed by LOTR: War of the Rohirrim animator Yasuhuro Aoki. If that wasn’t enough animated Batmen for you, a trailer for the movie Batman: Knightfall Part One has been released and attendees of the festival were able to see and review the film ahead of its currently undated release later this year. Finally, a kid-friendly series focusing on Krypto was also confirmed to be in the works. Prime Video has renewed animated superhero series Invincible for a sixth season.  The trailer debuted for Robert Eggers’ anticipated return to period piece horror with Werwulf, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, Lily Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, from Illumination, Nintendo, and Universal, will hit Peacock on July 30, following a 120-day theatrical-to-streaming window. Rockstar opened GTA VI pre-orders June 25, pricing the standard edition at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99. Pre orders reportedly topped 39 million units and $3 billion, even as Take Two stock dipped on pricing concerns and no day one online mode. Fans criticized the lack of a disc version and steep price hike from GTA 5. GTA 6 launches November 19.

Spider-Man: BND trailer, Toy Story Rules at the Box Office, Blumhouse secures Curry Barker’s Next Film

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. Everyone’s forgotten Peter Parker…or have they? Sony gave us a second full trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the interwebs are buzzing about it. We get longer looks at Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk and Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle/Punisher in the film, as well as allusions to the big bad of the movie - though Tom Holland recently said on the press tour that the antagonist has not been figured out yet by fans.  Films continue to top each other’s openings at the box office this year, with Toy Story 5 having the current title of best opening of the year to the tune of $160 million domestically over the Father’s Day weekend. This was also the all-time best opening for the 30-year-old franchise. Disclosure Day took second place this weekend, though Toy Story practically beat its global take in the states alone, and Obsession and Backrooms continue their strong streaks coming in at third and fourth respectively. Universal and Blumhouse’s Atomic Monster are jumping on the Curry Barker bandwagon having acquired the young director’s third film in a reported eight figure deal. While Universal has been backing Barker, both Obsession and his upcoming film Anything But Ghosts are coming from Focus Features. Blumhouse has produced those same films, but this new move puts the horror powerhouse in a stronger position for film development. To tag onto the box office talk and remind you, Obsession was made for $750,000 and has now made more than $300 million worldwide - making it a tantalizing prospect for Blumhouse. Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Boroughs, a sci-fi TV series executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers. Chris Evans in Secret Wars, The Batman II Cast Rumors, Spielberg at the Box Office

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. While it may come as no surprise, the biggest Marvel news this week is still just as exciting as it is obvious with the revelation that Chris Evans will indeed appear in Secret Wars. While not officially confirmed by Marvel, the news broke via a social media post from March 26, that is just now gaining notice, with the actor himself telling Instagram user @comicconmomsi, "I can tell you that...I start work on the next one in a couple of months, I can tell you that," in a video message. That tracks with the projected August production starting date for Secret Wars we’ve discussed previously. While rumors and speculation are typically not our forte here, the rumor mill surrounding The Batman II cast warrants some attention. In May, we discussed headlines from sources like Variety and The Wrap that seemingly confirmed Sebastian Stan had been cast as Harvey Dent, as he had long been rumored to be, with Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance announced as Dent’s wife and father, respectively. In hindsight, those headlines resulted from Matt Reeve’s social media post where he confirmed and welcomed a number of actors as part of the film but did not actually reveal any roles. In the last week, industry insider Jeff Sneider has suggested that his sources claim that Stan will instead play Victor Zsasz and Brian Tyree Henry is set to portray Harvey.  Steven Spielberg has returned to the blockbuster arena for the first time in eight years with Disclosure Day, his UFO sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor, which opened to approximately $44 million domestically and $93.9 million globally, making it his biggest opening weekend ever for an original film. Meanwhile, Obsession continues its extraordinary run, adding another $19 million in week five for a domestic total of $188.3 million. Spielberg’s $115 million production earned strong reviews and a B CinemaScore. Sony has released the trailer for The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin’s sequel to The Social Network. Jeremy Strong stars as Mark Zuckerberg alongside Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and Bill Burr. The film opens October 9. Peter Sarsgaard has joined the Season 3 cast of HBO’s The Last of Us in a recurring role. He will play an original character named Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites. Production is currently on a planned hiatus to accommodate World Cup matches filming in Vancouver. It: Welcome to Derry writer Jason Fuchs has been tapped to write a new untitled Transformers script for Paramount and Hasbro. Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube are in talks to return for 24 Jump Street at Sony Pictures, reuniting most of the original production team. Apple TV+ has renewed horror comedy Widow’s Bay for a second season ahead of its season finale this week, and has signed creator Katie Dippold to a multiyear overall deal. Jason Momoa has made clear he has no interest in a PG-13 Lobo solo movie. In an interview with Collider, he said if he makes a standalone Lobo film, it will be rated R, full stop, though he’s open to appearing in ensemble DCU projects in the meantime. Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s Harry Potter series. Anya Taylor-Joy has joined the cast of the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hunt for Gollum, playing an elf character named Seren. Marvel Comics will publish a one-shot crossover this September titled The Muppets Take the Marvel Universe, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show by teaming Muppets characters with iconic Marvel heroes. Mark Hamill is joining Peacock’s Twisted Metal for Season 3 in a recurring role, playing the father of Sweet Tooth. Chris Sanders, co-creator and co-director of the original Lilo & Stitch animated film, will direct Disney’s live-action sequel Lilo & Stitch 2. Shooting is expected to begin later this year.

The Summer Box Office, Hugh Jackman to Star in Treasure Island

The Wayans Brothers’ nostalgia-driven sequel Scary Movie opened to a franchise best of $55 million. Unfortunately for Masters of the Universe, the 80s-tv show inspired live action adaptation barely scraped more than $29 million - a true bust for a film that cost more than $170 million to make. Horror darlings Obsession and Backrooms are still ruling the roost at theaters, both having crossed over the $200 million threshold this past weekend. Here’s the news you didn’t know you wanted, Hugh Jackman is set to star in a Ridley Scott-directed adaptation of the truly classic novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Adolescence writer Jack Thorne will pen the script that stars Jackman as the pirate Long John Silver himself. X-Men 97 Season 2 Trailer, Lex Dons His Power Armor, and Backrooms Dethrones Mando

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. Marvel dropped the first full trailer for X-Men ’97 Season 2 this week, confirming a July 1 premiere on Disney+ and Apocalypse as the season’s central threat. The nine-episode season picks up from the Season 1 finale with the X-Men scattered across time from ancient Egypt to the far future, while those left behind in the ’90s work to bring them back, with the trailer also sneaking in a Morph-as-Deadpool shapeshifting moment for good measure. A third season is already in production. On the Doomsday front, Joe and Anthony Russo posted a series of cryptic images to Instagram with various hints and teases towards an Avengers: Doomsday reveal connected to this week’s SXSW Film Festival in London; as of Tuesday morning, the hype seems to have all been for a Doctor Doom themed coffee shop pop-up for attendees of the festival.  James Gunn took to Instagram this week with a fit check from the set of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, revealing a first look at Nicholas Hoult in Lex Luthor’s iconic mech-suit, which in the comics gives Luthor superhuman strength, flight, and force fields. The image also appears to show a sandy, otherworldly backdrop, leaving plenty to speculate about heading into the film’s 2027 release.  A24’s Backrooms had one of the biggest opening weekends of the year, pulling in 81 million dollars domestically and 118 million worldwide in its debut, the largest opening in A24 history and more than triple what Civil War earned in 2024. The film was adapted from the viral YouTube web series by its creator Kane Parsons, who at 20 years old is now the youngest filmmaker ever to open a number one film, and was produced for roughly 10 million dollars. Meanwhile The Mandalorian and Grogu fell to third place after its second week in theaters with a 69% drop. Prime Video has renewed The Rings of Power for a fourth season ahead of its Season 3 debut later this year, with early preproduction beginning this fall and filming targeted for early 2027. Mandalorian and Grogu Review, Vought Rising Trailer Reaction, Matt Damon Replaces Ryan Gosling for The Daniels

Over this past Memorial Day weekend, The Mandalorian and Grogu opened to $163 million dollars worldwide, exceeding its projected expectations. In a big second weekend, horror film Obsession pulled in $30 million dollars, bringing the worldwide total for the film over $60 million dollars. Obsession was shot on a budget of less than $1 million dollars.  Prime Video has released the first trailer for The Boys spinoff and prequel Vought Rising, which stars Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash. The series is expected to start streaming sometime next year. Set in the 1950s, the teaser trailer follows a younger Soldier Boy and Clara Vought (later Stormfront) as a noir-style conspiracy and murder mystery unfolds amid secret experiments, corporate corruption, and the creation of America’s first superheroes.  More details have begun to emerge about The Daniel's upcoming sci fi film project. Matt Damon is currently in talks to star, replacing Ryan Gosling who dropped out of the project. The Hollywood Reporter also reports that the plot of the film involves global warming, time travel, as well as a possible superhero angle. There are two timelines, one set in the 1980s and one set in the present day and protagonists of the story are teens in the 1980s timeline. Brunson’s company, Fifth Chance Productions, is bringing the character back to life with Mark Fleischer who is the grandson of original Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer. Notably, the film’s plot will trace the character’s evolution through the perspective of Max and how the name that became an icon emerged.

  8. Secret Wars to Begin Filming in August, New Lanterns Trailer, and More Casting for The Batman II

    20 May

Secret Wars to Begin Filming in August, New Lanterns Trailer, and More Casting for The Batman II

The review embargo lifted today for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the bag is more than a little mixed. Critics are either praising the film for its fun action adventure nature of the bounty hunter and his foundling or others are saying the film does not live up to the iconography that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is known for as well as having too small of a story for the big screen. With this being the first Star Wars film in seven years, a lot is likely riding on the performance of Din Djarin and Din Grogu.  Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been quietly dishing details on not only Avengers: Doomsday but Secret Wars across his various media appearances in recent days. On Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Thing actor admitted the Doomsday script he read didn't have a finished third act saying, "I don't think it had an ending,” and described the production as so compartmentalized and "interstellar" that he'd repeatedly go back to Joe Russo to have the multiverse threading re-explained. Then in a separate chat with the Dog Day Afternoon Broadway team, a play based on the 1975 film the actor is performing in, he casually dropped that Secret Wars filming kicks off in August 2026, right after his stage run wraps in mid-July. HBO set August 16 as the premiere date for Lanterns and dropped a new trailer that complicates the show's dark, earth-based mystery pitch with shots of Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan in the classic Green Lantern uniform and what appears to be an off-world setting. The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner and reveals Laura Linney in an undisclosed part opposite Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. Matt Reeves used a series of X posts last week to officially welcome Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch to Gotham for The Batman: Part II. They join the previously confirmed additions of Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, and Charles Dance as Harvey's father Christopher. Henry, a Marvel alum from Eternals who also memorably appeared in 2019's Joker, marks his second trip into the DC sandbox, while Koch is known for his prestige work appearing in films like Bridge of Spies.  Michael continued another strong run at the box office this weekend and has now crossed $700 million dollars worldwide while the Devil Wears Prada 2 also continued its solid streak, crossing the $500 million dollar mark internationally. Mortal Kombat 2 crossed the $100 million dollar mark in its second weekend. Horror film Obsession opened very well with $23 million dollars worldwide, a big opening for a film from a first time director acquired out of a film festival.  Marvel is making some changes to leadership in its comics division. The company has promoted Brad Winderbaum, already its chief of television and animation, to head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise. At the same time, David Abdo, former manager of Disney's music division, will transition to serve as Marvel’s general manager, comics and franchise, reporting to Winderbaum. With the new top leadership coming in, that means that Dan Buckley, the longtime Marvel Comics head, is departing. Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition. HBO's Harry Potter series will already be recasting a role as production begins on season 2. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming season 1 will not return for Season 2 of the series due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' Cochrane and her family revealed in a statement. Disney+ has begun development on Ella Enchanted, a TV series based on the 2004 Miramax fairytale film of the same name that starred Anne Hathaway, who will return to produce the series. Anyone But You writer Ilana Wolpert will serve as showrunner. A final look trailer for Prime’s Spider-Noir, starring Nicholas Cage, was dropped today.
