Brexit Ten Years On (part 2)

It is 10 years since the UK voted to leave the European Union in the Brexit referendum. In this two-part series, Alex Forsyth, a BBC correspondent who’s covered Brexit from both Brussels and Westminster, looks at what impact the decision to leave the EU has had on various aspects of public and political life, both within Britain and beyond. In this second episode, Alex and guests discuss how leaving the EU impacted UK regulation, science and academia, and fishing and farming, and consider how Brexit has impacted the EU and British internal politics ten years on. Did Brexit allow the UK to free itself from the ‘burdensome bureaucracy’ of the EU and innovate independently, or leave it out of the loop? Did UK fishers and farmers get a better deal post Brexit? Were there fears the UK’s departure would trigger a domino effect amongst other European nations? And has Brexit ultimately made UK politics more European?

Iran Survived. Now What? | Espresso Martini

Chris and Matt dig into the fine print of the U.S.-Iran memorandum signed this week by President Trump in Versailles, separating what Tehran banks immediately — sanctions relief, frozen funds, an open Strait of Hormuz — from what's still contingent on a future nuclear settlement, and why claiming victory now looks premature. From there, a Foreign Affairs piece reframes the war's aftermath: rather than breaking the Islamic Republic, the campaign may have hardened it, elevating a younger, more nationalist generation around Mojtaba Khamenei whose pragmatism is tactical rather than moral — and inviting an uneasy comparison to Putin's Russia. They close on new reporting that the Pentagon has quietly raised Israel to a "critical" counterintelligence threat, working through allegations of bugged DIA offices and eavesdropped negotiations against the longer history of allies spying on allies. HOW YAKUBU GOWON DESTROYED COAL PRODUCTION IN ENUGU EASTERN REGION

Before oil became Nigeria's biggest source of wealth, coal was one of the country's most important resources. Deep beneath the hills of Enugu was a large supply of coal that powered trains, factories, and electricity stations. Enugu became known as the "Coal City" because it was the center of Nigeria's coal industry. The coal mines and coal-powered electricity plants helped provide energy to many parts of the country. But today, most of these coal facilities are gone. Many people believe that the Nigerian Civil War played a major role in destroying the coal industry and the coal-powered electricity system in Enugu. This story is about how war changed the future of Enugu coal power Plant in Nigeria. Political Republic

HOW FELA TRIED TO REVOLUTIONIZE NIGERIAN POLITICS BY CREATING HIS OWN COUNTRY

HOW FELA TRIED TO REVOLUTIONIZE NIGERIAN POLITICS BY CREATING HIS OWN COUNTRY  Imagine a musician so powerful that the government feared his songs. Imagine a man who created his own country inside Nigeria, challenged military rulers face to face, and used music as a weapon against corruption. While many artists sang about love and entertainment, Fela Anikulapo Kuti sang about poverty, oppression, police brutality, election fraud, and bad leadership. His stage became a political battlefield. His microphone became a weapon. His home became a symbol of resistance. This is the story of Fela Kuti, the man who tried to awaken Nigeria through music. #documentary #nigeriahistory  #untoldstories Political Republic
