First Contact: ‘Relics’ Season 6 Episode 4

The Enterprise is answering a distress call when they encounter a Dyson Sphere, not a hand dryer but a gargantuan ball built around a sun designed to house a vast population. They find the source of distress, it’s a transport vessel, the Jenolan, that crashed 75 years earlier. An away team investigates and discovers that the transporter has been rigged to store a pattern over the long term. They dematerialise and it’s Captain Montgomery Scott. You know Scotty? He was in Star Trek. The original Star Trek. No, not Simon Pegg. After the ship crashed, he worked one of his miracles to try and survive, but his friend Franklin didn’t make it. On board the Enterprise, he wants to help in engineering, but his knowledge is out of date and his lack of professionalism annoys everyone. So he gets drunk and visits the holodeck, which is what most people in the 24th century are probably doing at any one time. Speaking to Picard, he confesses that he feels obsolete, so the captain asks Geordi to take him down to his old ship and try and fix it to get the scans. Look, it’s busy work but it’s better than nothing. While they’re down there, the Enterprise then gets sucked into the sphere and is propelled towards the sun? Can Scotty prove his worth once again and save the Enterprise-D? First Contact: ‘The Best of Both Worlds, Part II’ Season 4 Episode 1

FIRST CONTACT: ‘THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, PART II’ SEASON 4 EPISODE 1 After the Enterprise’s plan to fire a burst from the deflector fails, the Borg set a course for Earth. A fleet of 40 ships engages the cube at Wolf 359 but the Enterprise is unable to join them having burned out the warp core. When they arrive at the site of the battle they find all the ships destroyed but prepare to engage the Borg once again. An audacious series of manoeuvres sees the Enterprise recapture Picard but he remains in the hostile guise of Locutus. While they can’t separate the man from the machine, Data establishes a way to hack the Borg’s collective consciousness, but can he stop them before Earth is destroyed? And can they save Picard? Yes, because this week’s episode is not a cliffhanger. Alex, James and Andrew spend far too long talking about this slow burning sequel to the greatest Star Trek cliffhanger of all time. Bonus Commentaries: Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg

With more details of the recordings of the two new series of Red Dwarf seemingly imminent, it seems like as good a time as any for a new edition of The Garbage Podcast. So, we should look at one of the high points of the show to celebrate the excitement we are all feeling, right? Right? Well no, frankly that’d be effort, so instead this edition of the podcast has our commentary for Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg. But as much as we joke about it, was it really that bad, or was it a quite enjoyable centrepiece to what is still the biggest celebration of the show on TV, Red Dwarf Night. I don’t know. Why are you asking me? We just recorded half an hour of commentary that (mostly) discussed that topic, so listen to that and I’ll get back to eating cereal in my underwear. What was the thinking behind the show? Was the rice manoeuvre pre-planned? And is Ansley Harriott truly an oily God as the Change.com campaign would have you believe? These kitchen lubricated topics and more are discussed as Alex, James and Andrew look at an look at an unusual oddity. Series V Commentaries: Terrorform

It’s been 25 years today since Terrorform first aired, and we’re marking the occasion with the latest edition of our Series V anniversary commentaries. It’s an episode that sees Rimmer stranded on a world where his own neurosis’ could very well be the end of him, and it’s down to the rest of the crew to save him. On the basis of that description, you’d be hard pressed to know if we were talking about this episode or Rimmerworld from Series VI, and perhaps that’s part of why this episode is often ranked at the bottom of Series V. But even if it’s the weakest of the series, that certainly doesn’t make it a weak episode overall. Even if it doesn’t quite compare to the extremely high standard of the other five episodes, there’s plenty to enjoy here, from the stranded Kryten, to Cat and Lister typing messages out to each other and the great big fake love in at the end. Was the episode better of for not showing much of The Unspeakable One? Are text based games still a thing in the future? And does anybody know what a POV shot is? All these laboured anecdotes and more will be discussed out as Alex, James and Andrew oil up and get down the gym to discuss an episode that launched some very excited letters through Chris Barrie’s letter box. Channel 27 News: October 2015 Round-Up
