#43 Jolanda van Weerd en Stefan de Haan over de Meldkamer

Van een steekpartij tot een reanimatie. Van een simpele overlastmelding tot een ernstig verkeersongeval. Dit zijn de incidenten waar collega’s van de noodhulp dagelijks naartoe racen. Maar hun werk begint niet op straat. Het begint op één plek: de meldkamer. Daar zitten de centralisten klaar om de 112lijn op te nemen, vaak midden in. Zij stellen de juiste vragen, houden het hoofd koel en sturen ondertussen de collega’s op straat aan. Ze bewaken het overzicht: Wie is er ter plaatse? Wat is er nodig? Moet de ambulance of brandweer worden opgeschaald? In deze aflevering vertellen Jolanda (OvD-OC) en Stefan (Generalist meldkamer) over het werk op de meldkamer. Wat doet de meldkamer precies? #45 | Brutalisme in de polder: een nieuwe bestuursstijl?

Onlangs opperde president Donald Trump het idee om het 250-jarig bestaan van de Verenigde Staten te vieren met een MMA-gevecht in de tuin van het Witte Huis. Vanuit Nederland is dit met verbazing en enige gelatenheid ontvangen. Maar dit voorstel staat niet op zichzelf. Het is een uiting van een bredere bestuursstijl die zich kenmerkt door het bewust opzoeken van confrontatie, symbolisch geweld en theatraal spektakel. In het NSOB-essay New Public Brutalism? beschrijven Mark van Twist en Shivant Jhagroe deze ontwikkeling als een nieuwe bestuursstijl die radicaal afwijkt van de gangbare logica van publieke besluitvorming in een democratische rechtsstaat. Zo vervaagt in een rap tempo de grens tussen wat kan zijn en wat ‘volkomen absurd’ is. Laten we onszelf daarom vooral niet geruststellen met het idee dat dit alleen overzee kan plaatsvinden. New Public Brutalism grijpt wereldwijd om zich heen – ook in Nederland. In deze aflevering gaat host Quirine Ganzeboom in gesprek met Mark van Twist en Shivant Jhagroe. The Daily Blast: Trump Push to Jail Foes Takes Darker Turn—and GOP Senators Are Rattled

Donald Trump just named William Pulte as acting Director of National Intelligence, replacing the outgoing Tulsi Gabbard. Pulte is best known for abusing his administration position to ransack the mortages of Trump’s enemies for fake pretexts to get them prosecuted and jailed. In today’s episode, University of Michigan law professor Leah Litman argues that the office of DNI could be put to even more nefarious and “terrifying” use. Indeed, GOP Senate Majority Leader John Thune suggested it may produce a “weaponized” DNI, a striking admission of serious danger ahead. Senator Tom Cotton curtly refused to share his opinion of the choice. And other GOP Senators said Pulte is unqualified for the job. Given the DNI’s power, these objections reveal visible consternation. Indeed, MAGA figures fully expect Pulte to be turned loose on the left. No Easy Off-Ramp: Iran, the US and the Search for a Deal

Are we seeing the potential for a diplomatic off-ramp in the latest phase of the Iran crisis, or just another pause in a much longer confrontation? The broad picture at the beginning of June 2026 is that the US and Iran appear to be trying to move from immediate crisis management to a more structured negotiation, but the process remains extremely fragile. A reported 60-day ceasefire extension would, in theory, create space for talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing some economic pressure on Iran, and eventually addressing nuclear concerns. But the hardest issues remain unresolved: Iran's enriched uranium, the future of its nuclear programme, sanctions relief, security guarantees, and the sequencing of who moves first.
