Supreme Court Declares Racism Over

The 5th Circuit gave us a doozy late on Friday night by tightening access to the abortion drug mifepristone—Leah and Melissa break it down. #44 | De weerbarstige zoektocht naar het stille midden

In tijden van polarisatie wordt het ‘stille midden’ vaak neergezet als de plek van rust en redelijkheid. Maar wie bevindt zich daar eigenlijk – en hoe stil is dat midden werkelijk? In een samenleving met stevige tegenstellingen blijkt dat midden minder vanzelfsprekend dan vaak wordt gedacht. In het onlangs verschenen NSOB-essay Verhalen(d) verknopen gingen de auteurs, te midden van het polariserende debat over de toekomst van het landelijk gebied, op zoek naar dat stille midden. Hun bevinding: het midden is niet per se gematigd, niet eenstemmig en zeker niet stil. En bovendien laat het zich alleen vinden als je bereid bent naast mensen te gaan staan, in plaats van erboven. Zo werd duidelijk dat polarisatie niet alleen speelt tussen landbouw en natuur, maar ook – en misschien wel vooral – tussen ‘Den Haag’ en het landelijk gebied. In deze aflevering gaat host Quirine Ganzeboom in gesprek met Bart Brandsma (polarisatie-expert) en Annemarie van der Wilt (onderzoeker bij de NSOB). Ze spreken over polarisatie, de kracht van verhalen en wat het betekent om in tijden van polarisatie het midden écht serieus te nemen. En ook: wat vraagt dit van onszelf, in hoe we luisteren, keuzes maken en soms – onbedoeld – bijdragen aan polarisatie?

Blijf weg uit de natuur, niet omdat het moet, maar voor de veiligheid. Ondertussen experimenteert de politie met rubberen kogels omdat de burger blijft demonstreren. De reden waarom de bevolking demonstreert, verdwijnt naar de achtergrond; de reactie wordt de norm. This is a damning admission: He seemed to blurt out that he has no idea what his own representatives are offering—showing deep disengagement from the details of the talks—while demonstrating that anything his negotiators offer should not be believed. The Daily Blast: Trump Has No Clue What His Supreme Court Is About to Unleash

Last week, the Supreme Court gutted protections against racial gerrymandering, and Donald Trump is already urging Republicans to capitalize on it. We recently wrote that Trump has no idea what this will unleash, and that’s the topic of today’s episode. Indeed, Trump unleashed a Truth Social rant on Monday urging GOP state legislatures to maximize the gerrymandering, insisting this would net an additional 20 congressional seats in the midterms. In short, Trump didn’t bother concealing that this corrupt scheme is only about holding power amid cratering public support—which absolutely requires Democrats to respond. We talked to Max Flugrath of the voting rights group Fair Fight Action. We discuss how Democrats can undertake retaliatory redistrictings of their own, what the roadmap ahead for this looks like, and why it’s absolutely possible for Democrats to neutralize the GOP advantage.
