The Daily Blast: Trump Press Sec Seethes at Media as MAGA Trashes His Iran Deal Fiasco

The fragile ceasefire with Iran is not silencing the mounting questions about Donald Trump’s threat to wipe out Iranian civilization. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt lost her temper under hard questioning on the topic. One reporter sharply grilled her, causing her to dissemble and snap angrily. She then kept ranting, suggesting absurdly that it was “insulting” to be even asked about this matter. This comes as some Trump’s allies are sharply questioning his Iran deal: Laura Loomer lamented that “we didn’t really get anything.” Mark Levin fretted that Iran is “still surviving,” and said: “I don’t trust the enemy...what’s going to be different this time?” Senator Lindsey Graham made his skepticism of the deal very clear. Many other MAGA figures attacked his threat. We talked to Georgetown national security expert Rosa Brooks. She explains why Leavitt’s spin is so vile, why MAGA is right that the deal is a disaster for Trump (but for the wrong reasons), and why we should still fear worse horrors to come. Brandstofcrisis legt luchtvaart lam: duizenden vluchten geschrapt door Iran-conflict Week 14 laat zien hoe verontwaardiging inmiddels een permanent verdienmodel is geworden. Donald Trump is boos en de rest van de wereld vooral boos op hem. Ondertussen blijft de waarheid rond de vermeende moordenaar van Charlie Kirk schuiven, met steeds meer signalen dat het verhaal nog niet compleet is. In Nederland wordt alles duurder, maar gelukkig zijn daar de kartelpartijen om de laatste euro’s netjes af te romen. De economische druk loopt op, terwijl de politieke antwoorden opvallend voorspelbaar blijven. De rechtszaal draaide overuren. Ali B, Inez Weski en Pepijn van Houwelingen stonden in de spotlight, met processen die minstens zo opvallend waren als het optreden van de persvoorlichters eromheen. Het klimaatnarratief verliest zichtbaar aan kracht, en zoals zo vaak ligt het alternatief al klaar. De energiecrisis neemt het stokje moeiteloos over als nieuw drukmiddel. In Israël wordt wetgeving aangescherpt richting de Palestijnse gebieden, terwijl spanningen verder oplopen en grenzen opnieuw worden opgerekt. Ondertussen blijken drones in Finland en Letland toch een andere herkomst te hebben dan eerder werd aangenomen, met de schaduw van Oekraïne op de achtergrond. Long covid verdwijnt stilletjes naar de achtergrond, alsof het zijn rol heeft uitgespeeld. En demonstreren? Dat mag nog steeds, zolang het onderwerp binnen de lijntjes kleurt. In deze aflevering hebben we het over een vraagstuk dat zich vaak buiten het zicht afspeelt, maar van grote invloed kan zijn op de levens van mensen: hoe Nederland de aanpak van huiselijk geweld, kindermishandeling en geweld tegen vrouwen heeft georganiseerd. Recente gebeurtenissen hebben dit thema opnieuw op de maatschappelijke en politieke agenda gezet. De ernst en verwevenheid ervan onderstrepen het belang van een goed gecoördineerde aanpak. Tegelijkertijd blijkt uit onderzoek dat er ruimte is om deze aanpak te versterken. Waar zitten de blinde vlekken? En wat betekent dat voor de manier waarop het stelsel nu is ingericht? In het onlangs verschenen NSOB-essay (N)iets te kiezen wordt die aanpak nader verkend. Daarbij klinkt een ongemakkelijke constatering: er is in Nederland veel geregeld, maar de coördinatie van die aanpak blijft diffuus – en daarmee ook de vraag wie er uiteindelijk aanspreekbaar is. Host Quirine Ganzeboom gaat in deze aflevering in gesprek met Judith Kuypers (voorzitter van het Landelijk Netwerk Veilig Thuis, en bestuurder van Veilig Thuis West-Brabant, safe groep en SMO Breda) en Laura Schröer (NSOB). Samen bespreken zij wat we zien – en niet zien – van deze problematiek, en over hoe de huidige inrichting van de aanpak in de praktijk uitwerkt. Wat vraagt dit van professionals, bestuurders en het stelsel als geheel? Nederland ziet zichzelf graag als een geëmancipeerd land, maar heeft dat zelfbeeld ook een blinde vlek gecreëerd? Als incidenten steeds hetzelfde patroon volgen, zijn het dan nog wel incidenten? Of zijn het signalen van een stelsel dat anders ingericht zou moeten worden?

Het gaat over de veranderde politieke cultuur en hoe de openheid en toegankelijkheid onder druk zijn komen te staan, en hoe dit het democratisch proces beïnvloedt. In Oranjesporen staan Splinter en historica Coks Donders stil bij de functie van de balzaal van stadhouder Willem V, oorspronkelijk gebouwd voor het huwelijk van zijn dochter Louise. Ze hebben het over hoe de zaal later dienst deed als vergaderzaal voor het eerste Nederlandse parlement en als troonzaal, waar koningen zelden aanwezig waren.
