The Median American Life Is Worse Than You Think

The Median Life Isn’t “Good”: What an Average 40-Year-Old Really Looks Like (US vs Europe & Asia). Nick challenges the myth that the “average” person lives well, arguing that median outcomes in health, wealth, relationships, work, and meaning are often suboptimal even in past economic “glory days.” He cites U.S. life expectancy, widespread chronic conditions and obesity, rising depression, and a skewed wealth distribution where median net worth is far below the mean and often tied up in home equity or retirement accounts. He describes declining marriage rates, significant divorce risk, low friendship counts and loneliness, low workplace engagement, strained family ties, nominal religious identity with low practice, screen-heavy leisure time, and notable substance addiction prevalence. Comparing regions, he says Europe offers better health floors and work-life balance but lower pay, while developed Asia has long life expectancy but lower happiness. He attributes inflated expectations to survivorship bias and compounding daily decisions, concluding people aren’t doomed to be median if they aim higher. Is Moving for Lower Cost of Living Actually Worth It?

Dallas’ rapid post-2008 growth has been driven by major companies and people relocating for lower taxes and cost of living. Questions whether moving mainly for affordability makes sense. The answer depends on where you’re coming from and highlights hidden costs beyond taxes and housing: loss of family support and social networks, rebuilding friendships and business relationships, weaker industry job concentration, travel costs to visit family, HVAC expenses in harsher climates, and unquantifiable quality-of-life tradeoffs like weather, culture, and pace of life. Nostalgia Is a Symptom of Negative Class Mobility

Nostalgia is a powerful but potentially harmful emotion that rises when people face declining life satisfaction, economic insecurity, and perceived downward social mobility, which helps explain why millennials and Gen Z romanticize the 1980s and 1990s. It describes nostalgia as recurring in waves about 25–30 years back, often tied to the last remembered boom period, citing examples like 1970s nostalgia for the 1950s and post-2008 nostalgia for the 1980s and now the 1990s.
