Coming Home to Your Art - José Delhart Gonzalez

Coming Home to Your Art - José Delhart Gonzalez

https://Art2Life.com - I used to think I couldn't make art because I didn't have some earth-shattering conceptual message. Or that somehow I hadn't struggled enough in my life to enter the world of fine art. It took way too long to realize I had meaningful thoughts and that I was just as eligible as anybody. Then, finally, I realized that what I was experiencing, and how I wanted to communicate this, is what made my art…well, mine. I have been mining the world of myself ever since.
Recently I stumbled upon the work of José Delhart, who has doubled down on finding his art in the stories and memories of his family. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Brooklyn, his highly personal art is a remarkable assortment of stylized figures, mythical creatures, and UFOs. He often paints on cardboard, repurposed paper, and discarded pizza boxes. Jose derives his art from the beautiful rich tapestry of his memories growing up on his grandfather's yam farm in the mountains of Puerto Rico, his family, and the neighborhood life of Brooklyn, NY. Join me for a lovely conversation filled with stories, adventure, and the magic of looking to the past for inspiration in the present.

The Art of Curiosity - Jaq Chartier

The Art of Curiosity - Jaq Chartier

https://Art2Life.com - I'm always trying to take time in my practice to experiment. It's always about figuring out what it is, or where I might go next. When I do, it's so satisfying. It reinvigorates my art-making. I love the idea of letting curiosity lead the way. What if your art was entirely experimenting? What if learning and curiosity were the primary informers of your art? How cool would that be?
Meet Jaq Chartier. She is a Seattle-based artist fascinated by experimenting with pigments, dyes, and color. She explores how paint and stains behave in the moment and over time. Her art, consisting of catalog formal-like presentations of color tests, is beautifully offset by her saturated, soft, and hard-edged color stains. Her art is non-objective, but one can't help feeling the universality, the grand scale of the force of Nature in her gorgeous art. Join me now for this fascinating conversation with Jaq. I think it will make you rethink your relationship with experimentation and curiosity.

This Is Not Orange - Sun and Nicholas Wilton

This Is Not Orange - Sun and Nicholas Wilton

https://Art2Life.com - While on Day 3 of the Tour Du Mont Blanc (a 10-day hike around the largest mountain in Europe), I was struck with a question: How do you know orange is orange? What is color? How do we define it, and is it different for everyone? While pondering these big questions, I ran into a kind and gentle soul named Sun, a quantum physicist from Kolkata, India that studies lightwaves passed through diamonds. It quickly became clear that this providential meeting was a fantastic way to answer some of my questions. With miles to go and no one in sight, I thought I’d see if Sun could shed some light on the mystery of color. Join me now for an interview in the most unlikely of places!

Figuration and Abstraction - Ian Kimmerly

Figuration and Abstraction - Ian Kimmerly

https://Art2Life.com - I love talking to other artists about everything they’ve gathered from their life and then distilled into their art. This, in the most straightforward way, is what artists do. All the ingredients are different for each of us, but where one's art truly becomes singular has to do with the sensitivity and skill in juxtaposing the differences between those ingredients.
Meet Ian Kimmerly. Here is a partial but incomplete list of the contrasts in his art: His work feels realistic but also dreamlike. It is specific but elusive. Figurative but also abstract. Planned but intuitive. Illusionary but factual. Intimate but universal. Ian's work draws you in so close, but he can somehow hold you at arm's length as well.
As complex as all these elements sound, one only needs to see his work to instantly get the feeling or sense that we have all been here before. His pictures are of our life. Ultimately they connect us or at least hold out that invitation. How this remarkable work has come about is the thrust of my conversation today with Ian. His humility and approachability are refreshing, but it is the insanely refined, nuanced thinking behind his art that took my breath away.

    Combining Differences - Katherine Mann

    Combining Differences - Katherine Mann

https://Art2Life.com - Growing up, Washington DC-based artist Katherine Mann’s father was an American foreign service officer. Her Taiwanese mother was a teacher and a graphic designer. Her father's position had them moving every 2-3 years. Katherine grew up in parts of Asia, the Middle East, and various places in the United States. Her interest in both Chinese brush paintings and western abstractionism was derived from these early childhood relocations that gives her work such a rich and distinct feel.
Katherine's art, like her life, has matured into a remarkable tour de force of combining disparate elements and contrasts. It is made by controlling paint but also freely pouring paint. It speaks to the fragility and majesty of nature simultaneously. It is bold and confident but also delicate and fragile. Her thinking and evolution as an artist shows us that we can embrace our separateness and know our innate, shared connection with the World.
