    #243 DUTCH - Wat maakt een portret dat blijft hangen, een gesprek met Koos Breukel

    In deze aflevering ben ik te gast bij Koos Breukel, één van de bekendste portretfotografen van Nederland. We zitten in zijn studio, tussen achtergronddoeken, prints aan de muur en een werkproces dat tegelijk razendsnel en tergend traag is. Koos vertelt hoe hij werkt, waarom hij flitst, waarom hij graag ruimte laat voor terloopsheid, en hoe een beeld pas later kan tonen of het “blijft hangen”. We praten over zijn liefde voor schilderkunst en ambacht, over analoog werken als iets persoonlijks, en over archiveren als een manier om je eigen leven opnieuw te lezen. Ook over het mysterie van mensen, waarom hij liever nieuwsgierig blijft dan alles te willen weten, en hoe de echte keuze vaak pas weken, maanden of zelfs jaren later gemaakt wordt.     #242 ENGLISH - A lesson about space I needed myself

    I drove to Alkmaar, to a place where you wouldn’t necessarily expect anything special. Just an industrial area, but what stayed with me wasn’t the location, but the conversation, about creativity and getting stuck.And about something we often misunderstand. We sometimes believe that once you’ve “made it,” ideas just keep flowing. That success guarantees inspiration. It doesn’t. Even photographers who work internationally, publish books, and have full calendars get stuck. The difference is that they don’t see it as failure, but as a signal. In this episode, I talk about why creativity isn’t a talent you either have or don’t have, but a muscle you train. Why making space matters more than working harder. And why two hours without a clear goal can be more valuable than a fully productive day. I also share something personal, about slowing down and being forced to pause. And how, in that pause, an idea surfaced that I had been trying to push for months.     #242 DUTCH - Een les over ruimte die ik zelf nodig had

    Ik reed deze week naar Alkmaar, naar een plek waar je het eigenlijk niet verwacht. Gewoon een industrieterrein. Maar wat mij daar vooral bijbleef, was niet de locatie, maar het gesprek, over onder meer creativiteit en vastzitten.En over iets wat we vaak verkeerd begrijpen. We denken soms dat wanneer je “er staat”, dat ideeën vanzelf blijven komen. Dat succes inspiratie garandeert. Maar dat is niet zo. Ook fotografen die internationaal werken, die boeken maken, die volle agenda’s hebben, zitten vast. Het verschil is dat zij het niet zien als falen, maar als een signaal. In deze aflevering vertel ik waarom creativiteit geen talent is dat je hebt of niet hebt, maar een spier die je moet trainen. Waarom ruimte maken belangrijker is dan harder werken. En waarom twee uur zonder doel soms waardevoller is dan een hele dag productief zijn. Ik deel ook iets persoonlijks. Over vertragen. Over noodgedwongen stilvallen. En hoe net daar een idee ontstond waar ik al langer op zat te duwen.     #240 DUTCH - Als mijn podium jou stoort, wat zegt dat dan?

    Onderweg naar Frankrijk, acht uur in de auto, nam ik een beslissing. Ik voeg een nieuw hoofdstuk toe aan mijn online training. Over AI. Niet als trend, maar als realiteit. Wat betekent het voor je werk? Voor je ondernemerschap? Voor je positie als fotograaf? Tegelijk kreeg ik een bericht van een fotograaf die zei dat ik “professioneel te veel mijn podium pak”. Vroeger had dat me geraakt. Vandaag zie ik het als een spiegel. Want zichtbaar zijn is geen ego-oefening. Het is verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor je werk. In een tijd waarin alles sneller, digitaler en onpersoonlijker wordt, willen mensen weten wie er achter de beelden staat.     #239 DUTCH - Van graffiti naar festival: Rizon Parein over ambitie, echtheid en de toekomst van beeld

    In deze aflevering van De Donkere Kamer praat ik met Rizon Parein: Antwerpse autodidact die startte als graffitikunstenaar met een liefde voor 3D-letterstyles, en die later campagnes maakte voor merken als Nike, Apple en Adidas. Maar zijn echte motor blijkt iets anders: community. We duiken in het ontstaan van Us By Night (eerste editie in 2016): hoe een “braaf” conferentieformat werd omgebouwd tot een nachtelijk creativiteitsfestival waar talks, spel, club-vibes en ontmoetingen bewust door elkaar lopen. Rizon vertelt open over de rauwe realiteit achter festivals - fundraising, stress, partners die wegvallen - én over waarom integriteit voor hem niet onderhandelbaar is. Ook fotografie komt uitgebreid aan bod: zijn honger naar échte mensen, zijn twijfel om zichzelf “fotograaf” te noemen, studio-ambities, en waarom hij AI fascinerend vindt maar het tegelijk uit zijn eigen beeldtaal wil houden.     Na een maand in Patagonië kom ik terug met wat heimwee, veel helderheid en en zeker ook scherpe vragen. Over kernwaarden. Over hoe je je leven wil leiden.
