Design Life is a podcast about design and side projects for motivated creators. It was born after your hosts, two serial side project addicts, saw a gap in the podcast market for a conversational show about design and the issues young creatives face, that was hosted by two females.

This show aims to tackle the big issues designers face like getting paid, overcoming a creative block or managing time, to name a few. We want to open up discussion about things we wish we heard people talk about when we were studying, and we want to chat to you about the joys and the frustrations of working in the tech industry by day, and on our passion projects in the rest of our waking hours. We hope that by doing so, Design Life will give you a dose of motivation or inspiration when you need it.

Two gems

They have no idea who I am but somehow I think of Charli and Femke as mentors. 😂 This podcast is my go-to for design advice. I just finished the episode on ‘Ageism in the tech industry’. I have also been wondering why internships are only available to students and how this leaves a gap in possibilities for anyone switching careers, etc. In Europe, I think it boils down to the minimal pay interns receive. That doesn’t make it acceptable tho. Hopefully this will change. Charli and Femke said it much better than I can. Can’t wait for future episodes!

Sense of belonging

While listening to the ladies I realised that this looking for friendship on the work floor, experiencing a sense of belonging is universal. Everybody needs a certain degree of belonging, because it makes worklife more enjoyable. I was wondering whether people nowadays feel like they have to make friends more than ever, because the opposite is not something they like to consider. It makes them feel alone and not appreciated on both a personal and professional level. But I myself like to draw a line between professional and personal friendship. I do appreciate friendliness and openness on a professional level, but I have limits. I need a distinction, because quite frankly my worklife is not my life. My life outside work is what I value the most and that is what I consider My Life. Work is just..Work. But, having said that, I do understand that it depends on the length of time you spend on a job. If you see people day in, day out, you will look for common grounds and maybe a sense of familiarity.
