TPV #18: Deep dive: A look into the life and career of William (Bill) Braniff with prof. James Forest

In this episode, TPV editor-in-chief professor James Forest sits down with William (Bill) Braniff. William Braniff is the Executive Director of the Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) and a research assistant professor in the Department of Justice, Law, and Criminology (JLC) at the School of Public Affairs at American University. He most recently served as the Director of the Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (CP3) at the United States Department of Homeland Security, overseeing the implementation of its public health-informed approach to targeted violence and terrorism prevention. Together, they explore his life's work and career, taking a deep dive into his research and ideas. Terrorism and Political Violence is a podcast series produced by the Journal of Terrorism and Political Violence (TPV) in collaboration with Utrecht University. This podcast is comprised of three types of episodes. What’s wrong with academic cancel culture (and what’s not)?

Is there such a thing as academic cancel culture? If so, should we be worried about it? In this episode of the IOS Futures of Democracy Podcast, our host Dr. Janis Schaab (Ethics Institute, Utrecht University) discusses these questions with our guest Prof. Dr. Dieter Schönecker (Practical Philosophy, University of Siegen). Schönecker argues that academic cancel culture is very real, and a real problem. But, for him, the root of the problem isn’t moralism or activism. Instead, it’s epistemic arrogance: the sentiment that one can determine whether something’s true or false, scientific or unscientific, and right or wrong, once and for all. Schaab and Schönecker end by discussing the relation between academic cancel culture on the one hand, and government crackdowns on academic freedom on the other hand. Oratie Marc Hertogh: De maatschappelijke rechtsstaat

Marc Hertogh is faculteitshoogleraar faculteitshoogleraar Maatschappelijke en institutionele dimensies van de rechtsstaat aan de faculteit Recht, Economie, Bestuur en Organisatie van de Universiteit Utrecht. Dit is een opname van zijn oratie “De maatschappelijke rechtsstaat, uitgesproken op 5 februari 2026 in Utrecht. In zijn oratie laat hij zien dat we voor een goed beeld van de rechtsstaat een ander perspectief nodig hebben: niet wat is de rechtsstaat, maar waar is de rechtsstaat? Bij discussies over de rechtsstaat is onze blik in de eerste plaats gericht op Den Haag. In deze oratie laat Hertogh graag een andere kant van de rechtsstaat laten zien. Nederland kent van oudsher een breed maatschappelijk middenveld met talloze vrijwilligersorganisaties, belangengroepen en burgerinitiatieven. Hij laat zien dat veel van deze organisaties een sleutelrol vervullen bij de dagelijkse invulling van de democratische rechtsstaat.
