The world is our home and it is up to us to explore it as we wish to, even though it meaning we will be away from family and friends for some time, and more often, extended periods of time. Loneliness can creep in like a close friend, and we find ourselves lost in the middle of the unfamiliar. This is a safe space to build community and bring people from different places together with a common goal, connection and belonging.

Yann – “Stop watching the news.”

Meet Yann, the second Yann I interview and in his words, “the best one!”. If having the same name was not a good coincidence already, they share a childhood background as well! What a small world! Yann has a very distinct and interesting background! Asia sparkled on his interest since a young age, but it wasn’t until later on that he travelled internationally quite a lot for work, that he had the opportunity to see Asian with his own eyes. So when he finally came to live in China over 10 years ago, the country felt familiar, like old friend. Shenzhen is not the first city he lived here, being Foshan the place he met his now wife! We discuss his current freelance business of engineering and consulting in the energies’ sector as well as the challenges of dealing with local governmental entities and its procedures, which on his view is way harder than adapting to the daily life! We talk cultural differences, raising an international family and how his son is practically Chinese! We also expand on the different kinds of international communities around China and how important it is to understand the language and the culture in order to better live and interact with the locals. From the stereotype China once was to the current progressive country it has become, we touch into many debatable topics worth discussing. Elen Abelova – “Be a decent human being and you will be fine here!”

Meet Elen, a beautiful and strong minded young lady who I met by mutual friends. With a background in English and Chinese languages, she had the opportunity of coming to China for the first time on an exchange program during University time and knew she wanted to go back. We chat about her first time visiting China and the journey that has brought her to Shenzhen. We also get into those first days of moving to a new country, when you don’t know how things work and the challenges of meeting people and making friends. She also points out a very interesting take on living in China and being a part of the local society, in which many foreigners might feel pressured to do. Elen shares a personal story about the debatable topic of cameras everywhere in China and why she thinks it should not be something to be afraid of, take your own conclusions out of it and let me know! We discuss taboos, the wonderful dishes you can find in China, how to comfortably live here as a foreigner. This was a very insightful conversation, specially for people thinking on coming to China for the first time and what kind of mindset you should have before embarking in this journey. Hannah & Ryan – “It was kind of a crazy miracle”

Meet the Bartons, a young, courageous and lovely couple who I had the pleasure to sit down and have a real talk of what is to move a family of 6 to China! Having arrived recently to the country, they are still on the learning curve of how the country’s systems work and how to pass from survival mode to comfortably living in this unique place. It all started because of Ryan’s ability to speak Mandarin, proving that learning a language can give you wings and the ability to fly anywhere you want! We chat the challenges of bringing little kids into the country and how to navigate the academic as well as social life for the children and for themselves! From different behaviors and social norms that would maybe be perceived as rude in other places, Hannah and Ryan share their personal experiences and thoughts on adapting to this new society and raising a family at the same time. We talk first impressions, food adventures, tips and things to know if you are planning on moving to China. This was a great and meaningful conversation on what it takes to embark on an unknown journey to an unknown land, as well as the importance of community building. New beginnings are never easy and it can be very daunting at times, but with a growth mindset and positive intention it can be the opportunity of a lifetime.
