Never Can Say Goodbye: A Dad’s Wisdom on Letting Go and Saying ‘See You Later’ to His Only Daughter Leaving for University

Every parent dreams of the day their child steps confidently into the world — and yet that same day can quietly horrify them. It’s every hope and aspiration wrapped in a single goodbye. It’s the mission you feel you were put on Earth to do… and the moment you wonder if you actually did it right. In this episode of The Coach’s Corner, I share the journey of sending my only daughter, Makayla, off to university — a moment that brought back memories of our car rides together, listening to the Jackson 5’s “Never Can Say Goodbye.” It was our ritual. Our soundtrack. Our reminder that even when life moves forward, love doesn’t let go. And woven through this story is our faith as parents — because we almost lost her before she was born. We held onto God, believing He would bring her here, believing she had purpose, believing she would make a difference in the world. Her name, Makayla, means “Who is like Yahweh.” Now she’s here — or rather, not here with us anymore — as she steps into her own life at university. The same faith that carried her into this world is the faith we lean on as she walks into the world of her future. This episode is about how parents — not only as leaders of their children, but as the ones who must eventually send them into the world — learn to say not goodbye, but see you later. LEADING UNDER PRESSURE: How to Support People Without Transferring Your Anxiety

Leaders today face a new kind of pressure — not just to deliver results, but to absorb uncertainty, regulate emotion, and support people who are struggling without transferring their own anxiety. Recently, I sat down with Aslak De Silva, host of Black Belt of Leadership and a fellow member of our Mission Matters podcast family, to explore exactly that. We talked about adversity, emotional intelligence, identity, compassion, and the human side of leadership. Today on The Coach’s Corner, I’m bringing those insights home — and expanding them. And if you want to go deeper after this episode, check out Episode #93: Emotional Echo, where we explore how leaders’ emotions ripple through their teams. PLAY ON! What the World Cup Teaches Us About Humanity, Identity, and Connection

The World Cup is more than a tournament. It’s a global classroom—a living, breathing lesson in humanity. On the pitch, legends like Alphonso Davies, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappé show us what excellence looks like. But in the stands, in the streets, and across the world, something even more powerful happens: Families travel together. Communities gather. People spend thousands of dollars to be part of something bigger than themselves. Cultures collide—and connect. Hearts sync—literally sync—in shared emotion. This episode, PLAY ON! What the World Cup Teaches Us About Humanity, Identity, and Connection, draws on powerful insights from past Coach’s Corner conversations with Nadine Zeinoun, Loren Rosario Maldonado, and Brian McIntosh to explore why this global event moves us so deeply—and what it reveals about who we are. Humility — The Ground We Rise From: How Being Low Lifts You Up With Others

Humility. What is it? And why does it matter? It’s one of the most misunderstood virtues in modern life — often confused with weakness, passivity, or self‑erasure. But long before psychology labs, leadership seminars, or emotional‑intelligence workshops, ancient cultures understood humility as something far more powerful. In the ancient Near East, humility meant groundedness — literally returning to the earth, the place we ultimately come from. In spiritual traditions, humility was the gateway to wisdom. In social movements, humility fueled courage, compassion, and justice. And in business, humility keeps the workplace culture healthy and well — creating environments where people feel seen, valued, and safe to contribute. And today, research from the American Psychological Association shows that humility strengthens relationships, deepens trust, and increases emotional resilience. From C.S. Lewis to Brené Brown, from Henri Nouwen to Dorothy Day, from Sojourner Truth to Harriet Tubman — humility has always been the quiet force that lifts communities, heals relationships, and strengthens identity. If you want to build deeper connections, lead with integrity, parent with empathy, and grow in resilience, this episode is for you.
