Is 12 Holes the Future of Golf? Mays XII Thinks So

Can 12 holes deliver a better modern golf experience than 18? Mays XII is betting that it can. Opening July 11 in Mays Landing, New Jersey, the former Mays Landing Country Club has been transformed into one of the most interesting new golf concepts in the state. Mays XII offers a legitimate round with full-length Par 3’s, Par 4’s and Par 5’s, while reducing the total playing time to approximately two to two-and-a-half hours. The DROP received an early look at the course before its public opening. The biggest surprise was how quickly Frank Ruocco and his team brought the property back to life. The conditions were impressive, the layout was playable without feeling overly easy and every Par 3 demanded a committed, high-quality tee shot. The round finishes with the memorable 12th hole, where the second shot plays toward the green with the completely renovated clubhouse in the background. It is a fitting conclusion to a course built around more than golf alone. Mays XII combines an affordable round, a putting green, food from LaScala’s and a clubhouse atmosphere designed to give golfers a reason to stay after the final putt. The result is a different kind of golf experience centered on quality, pace, atmosphere and the social side of the game. This is not an executive course, and it is not simply a shortened version of traditional golf. It is a real test of golf presented in a format that may better fit the way many people want to experience the game today. Watch the complete Course Feature for an early look at Mays XII, our honest impressions of the course and a conversation with Frank Ruocco about the vision behind its transformation.
