    W/C 29th June 2026 Never, ever, did I expect to be using this song as a title inspiration for TFM. I do have previous with it, because back in the day it was a third-set-staple when I was out playing the pubs and clubs of a weekend, in various parts of Yorkshire. But that still makes tacking it on as a reference to a section all about Brexit a little bit of a stretch, but there we are, that is how these things shake down. And the easter egg is discovering this video clip of it being performed as part of the Jools Holland New Year Celebration from the way back (I am not sure it was even the Hootenanny in 2003) featuring an incredible collection of artists and celebs. Admittedly it's very loose, but by the end everybody is having a whale of a time and you can't help but smile as you watch it. Stay safe.     The heat is on

    W/C 22nd June 2026 No word of a lie, I popped out yesterday to try and buy a fan... And of course you are right to ask the obvious, what kind of a lunatic tries to buy a fan on day three of a heatwave. Well after a near-military effort to keep the house cool Josh's room was still in need of a bit of assistance, partly due to user error, partly due to house design and aspect. And, for what seems like weeks and weeks I have been wandering past 'em, literally in every store I could care to mention; a cornucopia of Pedestal, Tower and new-fangled Bladeless, all piled up like mountain ranges. Clearly I was on a hiding-to-nothing, and of course I didn't exacerbate the situation by offering up the question "do you have any fans left?", but the absurdity of my behaviour did make smile.     Building a mystery

    W/C 15th June 2026 Toyah took me to the Beatles, and the Beatles took me to Sarah McLachlan. (Of course it starts with a Apple TV box-set, but that will become obvious as you listen to this weeks episode…) It could so easily have been Toyah, as ‘It’s a Mystery’ is one of the earliest chart tunes I can remember being fixated on (thinking about it, if you throw in Prince Charming and Stand & Deliver, it does explain a lot). And whilst it ain’t the greatest of the Fabs catalogue, I do love the way the drums kick back in after the break in MMT. But Sarah gets the nod this week, it’s a classic tune and she is an amazing artist. In fact if you have never listened to Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, then you have a treat on store. Stay safe.     Crimson and clay

    W/C 8th June 2026 Because this week is a bit of an 'on location' episode I didn't get around to mentioning a few other things. Firstly, the parking notice appeared for APCOA who handle the parking at Manchester Airport, a cool £100 fine for genuinely forgetting to pay the £5 charge. As it turns out I was in the parking zone for 2 minutes and thirty-five seconds. I may well still share my thoughts on this further down the road... Secondly, and before heading off, it was Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in Manchester at Bridgewater Hall. Everything about it was sublime, the venue, the setlist, the band and the man himself. He played a few 'band versions' of songs from his latest release, a solo acoustic album called Foxes in the Snow, and I can't think of a better way to name this week's episode than to share one of those songs. Especially as I don't recall a pertinent song about overhead lockers of very big barges. Stay safe.     As the dawn breaks

    W/C 1st June 2026 So I was in a hotel on Tuesday night, and I did that thing where I was just flicking through the TV channels and I chanced upon a film I hadn't seen in a long time. In this case it was The Hunt for Red October, and although I hadn't planned to, I settled back and gave myself over to a film I had seen many times before. Personally I think it is a belting movie, great cast and really nicely put together, and just the right thing for that particular moment. What's nice about those kind of happy accidents, is that I would never have been able to tell you thats what I wanted to watch - it needed to be a serendipitous experience.     Thunderstruck

    W/C 25th May 2026 I like things in group of threes or fives is possible. So the fact that naming this week's pod Thunderstruck means I have four touchpoints to the AC/DC classic is a little unsettling. The first is the song itself, absolute banger - no disagreement allowed. The second is the fact that it was used spectacularly well in the soundtrack of the Pixar film Planes. The third is excellent interpretation by those chaps known as 2Cellos, stunning stuff. And finally we have my thundery run, which you are going to hear about today. Which means I am on the look-out for a fifth just to resolve the symmetry conundrum. Stay safe.     Bangaranga

    W/C 17th May 2026 There is something so satisfying about wandering around selecting the wood I need for a project, getting stuff cut to size and whipping out my 5m measure to check some widths. I appreciate it's more than likely a bloke thing, and probably only one that hobbyists get a buzz from, but we have a cracking example in Huddersfield and the cohort that work there are super helpful.     Honesty

    W/C 11th May 2026 A thought struck me as I was walking through Charles de Gaulle airport last week. I wondered how far I was standing (at that precise moment, in that exact spot) from somebody that I knew, but was unaware of. And not just that moment, maybe the last time I was in London or in Leeds, or on holiday or on the train, etc, etc. Clearly with the tech we have at our disposal we can (to an extent) answer that question with stuff such as location sharing, and snap-maps. But that only works with an engaged friendship group, and not necessarily everybody we have ever come into some form of contact with. So the question remains, how close do we pass to people we are acquainted with, but never actually bump into. Was an old school friend also passing through CDG at the same time as me last week, or taking coffee in Headingley yesterday whilst I was at the cricket, or being stuck in the same queue as me on the M1 on Tuesday evening.
