PEI’s Data Dive: How PE is responding to growing cost scrutiny

This episode is sponsored by Troutman Pepper Locke and Withum Managers face an increasing set of expectations and obligations as the fees and expenses landscape continues to evolve. According to Private Funds CFO’s Fees & Expenses Survey 2026, conducted in partnership with advisory and accounting firm Withum and law firm Troutman Pepper Locke, nearly 80 percent of respondents reported that they experienced moderate to heavy scrutiny during their last SEC exam. These respondents were drawn from 132 US alternative asset managers. Investors are also taking a keen interest in cost allocation and disclosure practices. With structures such as continuation vehicles growing in popularity, its raising questions around the ambiguity of fund documentation, with many LPAs devised before these entities went mainstream. When faced with fees and expenses allocation questions not addressed in the documentation, managers are generally favouring a conservative response, with nearly two-thirds of respondents consulting with outside counsel. Moreover, the survey looks at how managers are preparing for an influx of retail capital, as well as examining the impact of AI on management fees. So, what does the push for greater transparency mean for managers? To unpack this further, PEI’s senior content producer, Evie Rusman, is joined in this episode by Colleen Fay, financial services practice leader at Withum; Theodore Edwards, a partner at Troutman Pepper Locke; and Bill Myers, Washington correspondent for Private Funds CFO. Together, they analyse the survey data and discuss how regulatory activity and market forces could reshape the industry going forward. PEI's Data Dive: The changing shape of private equity's biggest allocators

This year's Global Investor 150 – Private Equity International's annual ranking of the largest private equity LPs in the world based on the fair market value of their PE investment portfolios – reveals a total of $2.88 trillion was allocated to the asset class by the featured investors as of end-December 2025. This represents an increase of almost 9 percent on the previous year. Investors appeared to prioritise long-term strategy over short-term market conditions, maintaining confidence in private equity despite a challenging fundraising and exit environment. Rather than stepping back from the asset class, many are refining how they deploy capital, with greater interest in the mid-market and increasingly sophisticated portfolio construction strategies. PEI Group’s senior content producer Evie Rusman was joined by Carmela Mendoza and Katrina Lau, both senior reporters at PEI, to break down the findings and explore what this signals about the private equity landscape. This is the fourth episode in PEI Group’s new Data Dive miniseries, where we dig into our proprietary data, surveys and rankings, as well as recent market data sets, to understand what investors and fund managers are thinking, where capital is moving and how the asset class is evolving. PERE Core 100: Marking a cyclical low for private real estate

It is “Core Week” at PERE as we mark the release of our inaugural PERE Core 100 list of the industry’s top fundraisers for core and core-plus strategies globally with a range of accompanying interviews and analysis. The debut ranking found that the top 100 managers focused on real estate’s lowest risk-return profiles raised a combined $223 billion in aggregate capital for such strategies over the last five years. It is a useful benchmark against which future iterations of the PERE Core 100 will be measured, but that is not stopping us from gleaning some predictions about where the asset class is headed. In this episode, host Greg Dool chats with PERE editor-in-chief Jonathan Brasse and contributing reporter Kyle Campbell to break down the genesis of the Core 100, the research and methodology that went into it, and some of the biggest takeaways from the ranking’s first edition. We also sit down with Chad Tredway, global head of real estate at JPMorgan Asset Management – one of the top managers on the Core 100 list – for his take on where core and core-plus real estate sit in institutional portfolios and the types of factors that will drive investor appetite going forward.

How does extreme heat affect soil health?

Europe's summer heatwaves have caused widespread destruction, from the Rhine river hitting record lows to wildfires across France, Italy and Spain. It is also having severe impact beneath our feet. Many investors appreciate the importance of soil to our food systems, flood resilience and more. But how do events like extreme heat impact soil health, and how can we adapt? In this episode, our nature reporter Gina Gambetta sits down with Paul Hallett, a professor of soil science at the University of Aberdeen and president of the British Society of Soil Science. Hallett digs into some of the most exciting soil solutions out there, from the power of peas to boost nitrogen levels to acoustic technologies that can rapidly measure soil health. EQT: ‘We're happy to go fully behind the meter. The solutions work’

In this episode, editor-in-chief Bruno Alves sits down with Jan Vesely, a partner at EQT and one of the leaders of its new AI infrastructure strategy. EQT is one of the many blue-chip infrastructure managers to launch a dedicated AI infrastructure strategy, but it’s done something different: it launched an open-ended strategy anchored by EdgeConneX, its global data centre platform, which it’s owned for six years, and formed over $9 billion of capital for in the space of three months. Doing well by doing good? Reassessing the link between sustainability and performance

"Doing well by doing good" was an often-heard refrain at conferences throughout the early 2020s. It was even supported by influential academic studies that claimed sustainability and investment performance were highly correlated. Then came the invasion of Ukraine, giving a boost to dirty and opaque sectors such as energy and defence, and sustainability began to look like a drag on returns. ESG came under fire, with right-wing commentators arguing that it contravened funds' fiduciary duty. Four years on, with new conflicts emerging in the Middle East, the relationship between sustainability and performance is as hotly debated as ever. In this episode, editor Lucy Fitzgeorge-Parker discusses the evolution of thinking on the topic with Jason Mitchell, CIO for responsible investment at Man Group. They discuss the performance implications of exclusionary strategies, the use of quantitative methods to generate trading signals from climate and other non-financial data, innovative ways to leverage AI in sustainable investment, and how ESG might be depoliticised.

Anne Glover: AI will turn some SaaS providers into dinosaurs

In the world of European venture capital, very few names carry the same weight as Dame Anne Glover. She co-founded Amadeus Capital Partners in 1997 when the idea of a dedicated British deep-tech investment firm was, by most accounts, a little eccentric. London–headquartered Amadeus has backed more than 200 companies over its almost three-decade-long history. Glover herself has chaired both the UK and European private capital associations and this year was awarded a DBE – one of the highest honours in the British system – for outstanding contributions to science and engineering.
