artists in residence

isabelle wilkinson

We all have good ideas, but not many of us do anything about them. artists in residence celebrates the people turning ideas into action, and thinking differently to leave things better than they found them. Each week, a new interviewee shares their experience of a problem, the process they went through to do something to solve it, and their recommendations for how you can bring your own idea to life. We believe creativity and community are the most valuable tools we have for solving society’s biggest problems, and that when it comes to people and planet, we are all artists in residence.

Create impactful photographic campaigns for the BBC with Jason Baron

For the final episode of series 3, we spoke to Jason Baron, a creative industry veteran whose work centres on making brands and people look good. A photography expert who dedicates so much of his time to giving back to the industry he has worked in for many years. Jason used to lead the photography team at BBC Creative, and also acts, does voice over work and loves to make music. We talked about Jason’s career in television and commercial photography, the mentoring he does, and what a day in the life of a creative director in the BBC looks like. Jason shared his philosophy on what commercial photography should be - namely, the wider impact that great, art photography can have on those that view it. Most recently, Jason has been working with Comic Relief to tell the stories of the communities they help so people can understand where their money goes when they donate. What does 'creativity' mean to you? series 3

In our weekly conversations, we focus on speaking to people who use creativity for good. But, before that was our focus, and for all of series 1, this podcast was focused on asking questions about creativity more generally. What it is, what the outputs of creativity could be, and why some people described themselves as creatives and other don't. So, for this community-led episode, we passed the mic over to some of our listeners to hear what 'creativity' means to them. Want to contribute to the series 4 community special? Write a debut novel about identity, loss, and belonging with Jyoti Patel

Jyoti Patel is a writer. In 2021 she won the #Merky Books New Writers' Prize, which led to publishing her debut novel, The Things That We Lost, in January 2023. Jyoti is a graduate of the University of East Anglia's Prose Fiction MA, and her work has previously been published as part of WePresent's 'Literally' series, and in the anthology for the 2022 Bristol Short Story Prize. It's an exploration of family, loss and ultimately love and it discusses the nature of identity, belonging, and the stories we tell ourselves to manage trauma. We chatted with Jyoti about her creative influences growing up, how she went from writing for joy, to falling out of love with it, to winning the #Merky Books New Writer’s prize, and learned about her goal to tell a story that centres a British Gujarati family who don’t fall into stereotypes.
