    Sony Doubles Down on No Discs, God of War Show Recast Rumors & August’s Weirdest Indies - Beyond 955

    Look, it’s a hectic time of year for us, and we’re a little scattered, so this week we’re taking the show on the road and off the beaten path in Big Walk, the new co-op indie puzzle game from House House, the studio behind Untitled Goose Game. It’s an obtuse, meditative social experience that feels somewhere between The Witness, Journey and those “friend slop” games, but a bit less chaotic. Anyway, this week we’re talking about some Sony news - namely, PlayStation finally weighing in on the backlash to the plans to discontinue publishing physical game discs. The God of War show is apparently considering recasting Ryan Hurst with Dave Bautista, who we love, but not as Kratos. Meanwhile, there are some other very cool weird little indie games coming out this month - and we also chat about some new music we’ve been listening to, including deep cut discoveries like Sex Mex, Il Est Vilaine, Bibiza and Avenged Sevenfold’s surprisingly cyberpunk new EP Statica.     Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War Laufey & The Resident Evil Movie Made Our Comic-Con - Beyond 954

    That’s a wrap on San Diego Comic-Con for us! Joined by our old pal, ex-IGN and current comedian Mike Drucker, we break down our highlights (and uh, other moments) from the dozens of segments IGN produced, as well as some of the gaming-related news out of the show. Zack Cregger’s Resident Evil movie, Insomniac’s Wolverine and God of War Laufey, plus Jada’s time with Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls’ recent beta. We reminisce about some of the best and worst Marvel games from years past, including the Spider-Man and The X-Men in Arcade’s Revenge, as well as the time Spider-Man burned down Dr. Doom’s house.     Sony Killing Physical Games is Killing Our PS6 Hype - Beyond 952

Most recently, Xbox’s ruthless “restructuring” has left thousands jobless, and shortly before that, Sony announced plans to discontinue the manufacturing of physical PlayStation games starting in 2028, which will likely eliminate more jobs in the long-term, and doesn’t exactly give us hope for what’s planned for PlayStation 6. This console generation kicked off in the middle of a pandemic and the countless issues that caused. Sony made a multi-billion dollar push into the live-service space, which has since backfired, meanwhile, chip shortages due to the AI boom have made gaming more expensive than ever. Now, on top of all that, Sony’s plans to go all-digital are making the walls of its walled garden even higher than ever. So, pardon us if it’s a little hard to get excited about next-gen. Beyond! Some of the most beloved game characters ever debuted (or found success) on Sony hardware, from Lara Croft and Cloud Stryfe to Leon S. Kennedy and Solid Snake to Pyramid Head and Rayman.
