The History of Gentoo
Stampede Linux
When a system emerged, it was called Enoch
Making a Distro part 2
Sustainability of the project had made its way to the forefront.
Gentoo website ~August 2001
March 3 2002 public facing movement was easily spotted.
March 31 2002, 1.0 was finally released!
The huge influx of new users it encouraged caused bandwidth issues for Gentoo.
August of 2003, 1.4 was released.
Full installation could be completed in under an hour!
2004, marked a change from the dot releases.
2004.0 released February 28, 2004.
Daniel Robbins, the creator and founder, resigns from Gentoo.
Despite that work continued. 2004.1 was released shortly after that news, dot 2 in July and dot 3 in November.
September 2005, the first Gentoo Council was elected.
Daniel Robbins makes his glorious return to the project!
This lasted about 8 days before he resigned again.
Other developers joined Robbins.
Stability questions around the stability of the Gentoo Project
October 2009, a LiveDVD release.
11.0, released in 2011.
In 2015 A new website was announced! After the air was cleared, an actual NEW website.
In 2016, Gentoo Choice Edition. Then in July, Choice Edition Part Dos.

In 2017, 17.0 in November and an experimental 17.1 in December.
An issue on Github in 2018.
2019 saw the 17.1 profiles finally stabilize.
In 2021, the addition of 20.0 profiles were released.

It seems unlikely that AI will use less resources. With dedicated hardware we might not notice. It does aim to make the user experience better though.

LZMA Utils was left behind in favor of the similarly LZMA-backed Xz Utils.
version 5.0 is the transition from LZMA to XZ.
Some distributions would eventually migrate to using Z Standard compression, including Arch in 2019 and Fedora and Ubuntu would make the switch in 2020.
A new face, Jigar Kumar, shows up.
January 7th, 2023, Jia Tan was finally able to merge their own commits to Xz on Github.
Jia tries to convince the OSS-Fuzz team to accept a patch that disabled Indrect Function.
Adding the test files which weren't test files at all.
