Customer Reviews
Spoiler warning, but not keen.
I’m a big fan of Magnus, but I can’t recommend this one. It’s a big problem for me to be sympathetic to characters who are unrealistically stupid, and while “I’m sure the carnivorous alien will like me if I go in for a hug” is a classic of the genre, the decision made by the crew at the end is a few steps too far. Blasting into space with a blind hope of randomly finding an inhabitable planet while leaving hundreds of thousands of people to be eaten by the aforementioned aliens because life on a farm will end (unlike in a shuttle in a the vacuum of space, apparently) and because colonialism (indistinct from fighting off predators, apparently) is wrong, is the kind of decision that makes me think the characters well deserve their slow deaths in the depth of space. The otherwise potentially interesting discussions on the nature and definition of humanity are also spoiled by this. They are clearly people, but very stupid people. The monsters don’t achieve the clear aim of the writers of being an uncompromising threat while still sympathetic enough that you don’t want the exterminated. There are plenty of animals that show that level of sophistication, but if it were a choice between exterminating them and hundreds of thousand people being eaten, that choice is not a difficult or morally ambiguous one. And while I know this is an anthology feed, if this is what you open with, I’m not tempted to give the rest a chance as long as I have alternatives, and there are so many alternatives out there. Performances are good, soundscape is a tad exaggerated but otherwise fine.
