The View from the Editor's Chair: EJSS and European Sociology of Sport

In this episode, Dr. Adam B. Evans (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), outgoing Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Sport and Society, reflects on his time leading the journal in a conversation with Dr. Anne Tjønndal (Nord University, Norway), his successor in the role.  This is the last episode in our three-part EJSS special series, recorded in conjunction with the editorial takeover of the European Journal for Sport and Society by the RESPONSE research group at Nord University. Adam and Anne discuss what sets EJSS apart in the landscape of sport sociology journals, how the journal has evolved over the years and what it really means to take on the role of Editor-in-Chief of an international scholarly publication. The conversation traces the development of European sport sociology, its shifting trends, themes, theoretical debates and methodological approaches, as seen from the Editor-in-Chief's perspective. What does it take to run a journal, and what is it like to step down? Adam reflects on the priorities he set himself when he took on the role, the challenges he faced and how both the journal and the role have changed over time. A valuable conversation for anyone interested in the history and future of the sociology of sport in Europe, the inner workings of academic publishing and what it means to shape a field through editorial work. Do Book Reviews Still Matter? Reflections on Editing Book Reviews for EJSS

In this episode, Dr. Verena Lenneis (Aalborg University, Denmark) reflects on her experience as Book Review Editor of the European Journal for Sport and Society in a conversation with Dr. Daniele Canini (Nord University, Norway), her successor in the role. This is the second episode in our three-part EJSS special series, recorded in conjunction with the editorial takeover of the European Journal for Sport and Society by the RESPONSE research group at Nord University. Verena discusses the role of the Book Review Editor within the wider editorial team: the responsibilities, the behind-the-scenes coordination and the work of connecting book, authors and reviewers across the field. The conversation also explores what makes book reviews matter in academic publishing and whether they still hold their place in an era of rapid scholarly communication. What does a high-quality book review look like? Verena explains what makes a review effective, the most common mistakes authors make, and how she has approached the selection of books for EJSS over the years. The episode also offers a look  at the practical and human side of editorial work: managing deadlines, communicating with reviewers, and developing skills that the job demands but for which no one really prepares you. A valuable conversation for anyone interested in academic publishing, the workings of an editorial team, and the role that book reviews play in shaping knowledge in the field of the sociology of sport. About the contributors: Verena Lenneis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Health Science and Technology in the Faculty of Medicine at Aalborg University (Denmark). What Editors Look For: Publishing, Reviewing, and Getting It Right

In this episode, Dr. Adam B. Evans (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and PhD candidate Emma Wulff Ginnerup take us behind the scenes of academic publishing and reflect on what it really means to edit an international scholarly journal. This is the first episode in our three-part EJSS special series, recorded in conjunction with the editorial takeover of the European Journal for Sport and Society by the RESPONSE research group at Nord University. They discuss the role of the Editor-in-Chief and editorial team, including the responsibilities, decision-making processes, and the often invisible labour involved in shaping academic knowledge. The conversation also explores some of the key challenges in editorial work, from managing peer review processes to maintaining quality, fairness, and academic integrity across diverse submissions. What makes a strong research paper in the sociology of sport? Adam shares his perspectives on clarity, contribution, and theoretical and methodological rigour, while also highlighting what commonly leads to rejection. The episode offers practical and candid advice for early career scholars navigating the publishing process in international journals: how to approach submissions, how to respond to reviewer feedback, and what editors are really looking for. They also reflect on the peer review process itself—what makes a high-quality review, common pitfalls reviewers fall into, and why constructive reviewing is essential to the health of academic publishing. A valuable conversation for anyone interested in the inner workings of academic journals, scholarly publishing, and the making of knowledge in sport sociology. About the contributors: Adam B. Evans is an Associate Professor in Sociology of Sport and Sport Development at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sport (NEXS), the University of Copenhagen, and current Director Studies for the Masters degree in Sport Studies at the same institution. He is the former Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal for Sport and Society.Do you want to know more about RESPONSE? WebsiteInstagram
