The Odyssey Sleep Story, Episode 11: The Dog Remembered

Tonight's episode holds one of the oldest, quietest gut-punches in all of literature — a dog who waits twenty years for someone to come home, and recognizes him instantly, when every human in the house is fooled completely. There's something almost unbearably tender about being truly known by someone who never needed proof, an explanation, or a disguise removed. Has there ever been someone — or something — in your own life who saw straight through to who you really were, long before anyone else caught up? 0:00 Intro 3:20 The Walk Into Town 7:25 A Son Comes Home 12:55 The Seer's Promise 16:40 Melanthius at the Fountain 24:25 The Old Dog by the Gate 30:05 A Beggar at the Threshold 34:15 The Suitors Turn Cruel 41:40 The Footstool 44:45 Waiting for Sundown 54:15 Sleep Sounds This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation, told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to. Episode 11 covers Book XVII of the Odyssey: Telemachus returns home to a tearful reunion with his mother Penelope, and the seer Theoclymenus tells her that Odysseus is already on Ithaca. Meanwhile Odysseus, still disguised as an old beggar, walks into town with the swineherd Eumaeus, enduring an unprovoked assault from the goatherd Melanthius along the way. At the gates of his own house, his old hunting dog Argos — abandoned and dying, but still alive after twenty years — recognizes him instantly and quietly passes away. Odysseus then enters his own hall as a stranger, begs bread from the suitors occupying his house, and is struck with a thrown footstool by the cruelest of them, Antinous, while his own son watches in silent fury. What's covered in this video: - Telemachus's emotional homecoming to Penelope, and the seer Theoclymenus's declaration that Odysseus is already home. - The walk into town, where the goatherd Melanthius insults and kicks the disguised Odysseus at a roadside fountain. - The recognition and death of Argos, Odysseus's old hunting dog — one of the most famous scenes in the entire poem. - Odysseus's first hour inside his own hall as an unrecognized beggar, and his round of begging among the suitors. - Antinous striking Odysseus with a footstool, and the household's mounting unease at how the suitors are behaving toward a stranger. - Penelope's request to speak with the beggar, and Odysseus's decision to wait until the house has gone quiet at sundown. Mentioned in this video: Odysseus, Telemachus, Penelope, Eumaeus, Melanthius, Antinous, Eurymachus, Theoclymenus, Argos, Eurynome, Zeus, Athena, Apollo, the suitors of Ithaca, Homer's Odyssey, Samuel Butler translation, sleep story, bedtime story for adults, guided sleep narration, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. The Song Beneath the Sea | A Magical Sleep Story for Coming Home

There's a sound most of us stopped trusting a long time ago — the faint, steady hum that only shows up when we finally go still: right before sleep, in the pause after a deep breath, in the hush no one else is filling. Tonight's story follows a boy named Marlow down to the edge of the sea to find out where that sound has been leading, and he meets an ancient whale-being who's been singing it since before there were shores. It's a gentle reminder that the thing you've been quietly listening for was never far away, and that home is sometimes less a place you travel to than a stillness you finally let yourself feel. If you've ever caught a hum like that in your own stillest moments, what do you imagine it's been trying to tell you? This is a magical sleep story about a boy named Marlow who follows a faint, lifelong hum down to the sea and discovers it belongs to an ancient whale-being who has been singing it all along — calling him not away from home, but back into himself. 0:00 Intro 3:30 The Hum He Could Never Prove 7:45 The Night the Village Goes Still 12:20 The Shell That Sang Back 21:25 Carrying the Note Back Home 22:30 The Hum That Was Always Yours 24:20 Sleep Sounds Marlow has spent his whole life half-hearing a low hum in his stillest moments — after a hard cry, lying in the grass at midday, right before sleep — and dismissing it as wind, or his own pulse, or nothing at all. One unusually still night, he finally follows it down to the shore and meets Maren, an ancient whale-being who has been singing the same single note since before the coastline existed. Through their meeting, Marlow discovers that a small spiral shell he has carried since he can remember has been quietly humming the same note the entire time. The story is a gentle exploration of stillness, self-trust, and the idea that home can be a feeling you carry rather than a place you travel to. What's covered in this video: - The opening introduces Marlow's loud, loving, ordinary village life and the barely audible hum he's caught in stillness his whole life without ever trusting it. - The middle follows Marlow down to a moonlit shoreline where he meets Maren, an ancient whale-being, and explores themes of deep time, patience, and trusting something faint. - A turning point uses a small spiral shell Marlow has always carried to reveal that the hum he assumed was external had been part of him the whole time. - The closing widens the story's insight directly to the listener, inviting them to notice their own hum in tonight's stillness and let it carry them into sleep. Mentioned in this video: stillness, deep listening, self-trust, belonging, presence, coming home to yourself, patience, ancient wisdom, whale symbolism, guided sleep story, magical bedtime story, sleep story for feeling lost, sleep story for disconnection, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. The Odyssey, Episode 10: Made Young Again | Mythical Sleep Story

Tonight's episode is the one this whole series has been walking toward since Episode 1 — a father and son finally standing in the same room, and neither one sure at first whether to believe it. There's something in that moment almost everyone recognizes: the fear that comes right alongside relief, the reflex to doubt good news because you've been disappointed so many times before. Has there ever been someone in your own life you almost didn't let yourself believe was really back? 0:00 Intro 3:20 The Reckoning Wakes Up 6:45 A Father in the Doorway 17:15 The Goddess at the Gate 21:50 Made Young Again 27:45 Two Men Against a House 35:35 The Ambush That Failed 43:50 A Queen Who Remembers 48:25 One Fire, Two Faces 53:10 Music & Rain Sounds This is a sleep story continuing an abridged narration of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 translation, told as a bedtime series for adults who want something old, absorbing, and calming to fall asleep to. Episode 10 covers Book XVI of the Odyssey: Telemachus returns from his journey to Pylos and Sparta to find the disguised beggar — his own father, Odysseus — waiting in the swineherd Eumaeus's hut. Athena appears and transforms Odysseus back into his true form, and father and son reunite after twenty years apart. The two begin plotting against the suitors occupying the household, while on Ithaca, the suitors debate murdering Telemachus after their ambush fails, and Penelope confronts Antinous over the plot. What's covered in this video: - The reunion opens with Eumaeus's overwhelming joy at Telemachus's safe return, setting the emotional tone before the real reveal. - Athena's transformation of Odysseus from an old beggar into his true, youthful form is narrated as a moment of quiet awe. - The father-son recognition scene explores disbelief, grief held too long, and the relief of finally being believed. - The middle section covers the two men's private planning against the suitors, including the secrecy Odysseus asks of his son. - The suitors' failed ambush and council explore Antinous's murder plot and Amphinomus's restraint. - Penelope's confrontation with Antinous closes the episode's tension before returning to the quiet of Eumaeus's hut at nightfall. Mentioned in this video: Odysseus, Telemachus, Eumaeus, Athena, Penelope, Antinous, Eurymachus, Amphinomus, Zeus, the suitors of Ithaca, Homer's Odyssey, Samuel Butler translation, sleep story, bedtime story for adults, guided sleep narration, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. Magical Sleep Story for Anxiety | Sanctuary of Sleeping Guardians

This is a magical bedtime story for anxiety, about learning to love the part of you that never stops keeping watch. Elsie follows a moving light into a fog-filled forest and finds the Hollow: a bowl in the earth where thousands of lanterns lie burning low in the moss, set down by guardians who have finally been allowed to rest. There she meets Ilvane, the keeper of the place, and discovers that something small and shaggy has been walking three steps behind her since the night she was born, holding a lantern in its teeth, and has never once put it down. This story doesn't ask you to get rid of your anxiety. It asks you to turn around and thank it. 0:00 Intro 3:55 The Lights in the Fog 6:40 The Hollow of Sleeping Guardians 12:30 The One Who Walks Behind You 15:35 The Night She Never Left 19:05 Thank You for Staying Awake 21:20 Setting the Lantern Down 23:45 Drifting Off 26:00 Sleep Sounds What's covered in this video: - The opening follows Elsie into a fog-filled forest and establishes a world with no threat anywhere in it, so the nervous system has nothing to brace against. - The middle introduces the Vigil, a guardian creature given to every person at birth whose only work is to stay awake so their person doesn't have to. - The heart of the story reframes anxiety as hypervigilance left running long after the original moment ended, using the image of a creature still standing inside a night from years ago. - The turn arrives through gratitude rather than resistance: Elsie thanks her Vigil instead of sending it away, and only then can it set its lantern down. - The closing settles into rest with both of them asleep in the moss among thousands of dimming lanterns, ending on a slow fade rather than a resolution. Mentioned in this video: anxiety, hypervigilance, the anxious mind, self-compassion, befriending fear, protective parts, nervous system safety, letting go, gratitude, rest, guardians, vigils, lanterns, enchanted forest, fog, moss, sanctuary, keeper, sleep story for anxiety, magical bedtime story, bedtime stories for adults, guided sleep story, Dream With Jacob, Jacob Evans. Somewhere in you there's something that has been awake for a very long time. It checks the locks. It replays the conversation. It sits up in the dark listening to the house settle. We tend to treat that part of ourselves like an intruder, something to be silenced or fixed or medicated out of the room. It has never wanted anything except to keep you safe, and nobody has ever told it that the thing it's watching for already came and went, and you survived it. Tonight it gets thanked. Tonight it gets to sleep. If the watchful part of you had a name, what would you call it? The Odyssey Ep 9: The Longest Night | Sleep Story

Tonight is the night the two halves of this story start moving toward each other. Odysseus is up in the hills, sitting by a fire in a borrowed cloak, listening to the man who keeps his pigs tell the story of how he was carried off as a small boy and sold. And out on the black water, his son is sailing home through the dark, past men who are waiting to kill him. 0:00 Welcome 3:17 Athena Wakes Telemachus in Sparta 10:03 Farewell to Menelaus and Helen 18:18 The Eagle and the White Goose 21:44 The Road to Pylos 26:02 A Stranger Comes to the Ship 30:15 Sailing Toward the Strait 32:13 The Beggar Tests the Swineherd 37:35 News of Laertes 40:24 The Woman Who Raised Him 43:07 The Nights at Their Longest 45:51 The Island of Syra 47:26 The Phoenician Traders 52:25 The Necklace and the Signal 54:17 Six Days at Sea 57:35 Telemachus Comes Ashore 61:20 The Hawk and the Dove 64:57 The Road Up the Mountain 66:34 Sleep Sounds Neither one of them knows about the other. They are both going to end up at the same door before morning. There is a line in this episode that has stayed with me. Eumaeus tells the stranger by his fire that the nights are at their longest now, that there is plenty of night for sleeping and plenty left over for talking, and that a man who has been knocked around hard enough in the world gets a kind of pleasure, later on, out of remembering sorrows that are well behind him. That is what this whole episode is. Two men who have lost almost everything, staying up too late by a fire, telling each other about it, and finding it warmer than sleeping. Rest well tonight. The Odyssey, Episode 9: The Longest Night — a calm, slow bedtime reading of Book XV of Homer's Odyssey, adapted from Samuel Butler's public-domain 1900 prose translation for sleep. What happens in this episode: In Sparta, the goddess Athena wakes Telemachus in the night and tells him to sail for home at once — his mother is being pressed to remarry, and the suitors have set an ambush for him in the strait between Ithaca and Samos. Menelaus and Helen send him off with gifts, and an eagle carrying a white goose crosses the road in front of his chariot, which Helen reads as an omen of his father's return. On the way home Telemachus takes on board Theoclymenus, a fugitive seer. Meanwhile, in the hills above Ithaca, the disguised Odysseus tests the loyalty of his swineherd Eumaeus, learns from him that his own mother died of grief, and listens all night as Eumaeus tells the story of his childhood on the island of Syra — how a Phoenician nurse stole him from his father's house and sold him into slavery. At dawn, Telemachus lands and starts walking up the mountain toward the swineherd's hut. Who this is for: anyone who falls asleep to audiobooks, classical mythology, Greek epic poetry, long-form sleep stories, or a calm reading voice with no sudden loud moments. Marygold The Fairy Witch & Her Floating Garden: A Magical Bedtime Story For Adults

Some nights the body's ready for sleep long before the mind is — the mind just keeps circling, picking up the same three or four things and turning them over and over like it's looking for an exit that isn't there. That's the night Poppy's having in this story, right up until the fog rolls in thicker than she's ever seen it and a garden that shouldn't exist is suddenly waiting at the edge of her yard. What does your mind usually circle back to on the nights it won't let you rest? This is a bedtime story about a girl with a racing mind who is carried through the night sky in a floating garden until her whole body finally lets go. Follow Poppy, a girl whose thoughts won't stop circling long enough to let her sleep, as she wanders into a garden that only appears in thick fog. There she meets Marygold, a winged fairy witch who gathers glowing herbs, caught moonlight, and chips of fallen stars while her garden flies through the night sky. Together they brew a potion made just for Poppy, one that calms her racing mind and gently soothes her body until she melts into sleep inside the garden's coziest hollow. What's covered in this video: - The opening follows Poppy through a restless, can't-sleep night until she wanders outside into an unusually thick fog. - The middle introduces Marygold, a fairy witch whose floating garden lifts off the ground and flies through the night sky over the sleeping land below. - Together they gather bioluminescent herbs, caught moonlight, and a chip of fallen star, then brew a potion by the fire inside Marygold's cozy hut. - Marygold teaches Poppy a small spoken incantation, and the finished potion calms Poppy's racing mind and physically soothes her restless body. - The closing settles Poppy into a moss-lined, star-lit nook within the still-drifting garden as she falls fully asleep. Mentioned in this video: bedtime story, sleep story, fairy witch, floating garden, magical herbs, bioluminescent herbs, caught moonlight, fallen stars, incantation, spellcraft, racing mind, restless body, calming the nervous system, falling asleep, Dream With Jacob, Marygold, Poppy. The Odyssey, Episode 8: A Fire He Doesn’t Own | Sleep Story

Odysseus spends this whole episode being cared for in his own house without anyone realizing it's his — fed the best cut of meat at the fire, given a stranger's own cloak against the storm, welcomed by a man who has stayed loyal to a master he's sure is already dead. There's something quietly moving about being looked after by someone who has no idea who you really are, and doing it anyway, simply because that's who they are. Has anyone ever taken care of you in a way that meant more once you understood what it actually cost them? I'd love to hear about it in the comments. 0:00 Intro 3:25 Eumaeus and the Dogs at the Gate 11:55 What the Suitors Are Devouring 18:45 An Oath Sworn on the Hearth 23:15 The Cretan He Never Was 37:40 A Wager Neither Man Will Win 43:05 The Sacrifice at the Fire 47:50 The Trick of the Borrowed Cloak 57:35 Music & Rain Sounds This is Episode 8 of a Dream With Jacob series adapting Homer's Odyssey as a bedtime sleep story, read from Samuel Butler's 1900 public-domain English translation (Roman god names swapped to their Greek originals — Zeus, Athena, Hermes). It's timed to the cultural wave around the 2026 Nolan film, but adapts only Homer's original text, never the film's script or scenes. Episode 8 covers Book XIV in full. Disguised as an old beggar, Odysseus climbs into the hills of Ithaca and is nearly attacked by guard dogs before the swineherd Eumaeus drives them off and welcomes him in. Eumaeus, who doesn't recognize his own master, shares his grief over Odysseus's long absence and describes the suitors devouring the household's wealth without shame. Odysseus swears an oath that his master will return within the month, but Eumaeus, burned before by other travelers' false hope, refuses to believe it, and worries aloud about the danger waiting for Telemachus. Asked for his own story, Odysseus invents a long, detailed autobiography as a Cretan exile — a soldier, a shipwreck survivor, a man who claims to have heard real news of Odysseus's treasure and near return. Eumaeus is moved but still unconvinced, and the two strike a wager over it. That evening the household shares a sacrifice and a feast in the stranger's honor, and when a cold storm rolls in that night, Odysseus tells one more clever, invented story — this one about a cloak he once borrowed through a trick of his own cunning — and wins himself a real cloak and a warm place by the fire for the night. Eumaeus, ever careful of what's his to protect, heads back out into the storm to sleep beside his own herd. It's told gently, as a slow-moving narrative to rest inside rather than a guided meditation with direct instruction. What's covered in this episode: - Odysseus climbs into the hills of Ithaca disguised as an old beggar and is nearly attacked by Eumaeus's guard dogs before the swineherd drives them off and takes him in. - Eumaeus, not recognizing his own master, shares his grief over Odysseus's absence and describes the suitors consuming the household's wealth without limit. - Odysseus swears an oath that his master will return within the month; Eumaeus, wary of travelers' false hope, doesn't believe him, and worries aloud about the danger waiting for Telemachus on his way home. - Asked for his own story, Odysseus invents a long autobiography as a Cretan exile — a soldier, a shipwreck survivor, a man who claims to bring real news of Odysseus's treasure and near return. - Eumaeus, moved but still unconvinced, strikes a wager with him over whether the news will ever come true. - The household shares an evening sacrifice and feast in the stranger's honor. - A cold storm rolls in, and Odysseus tells a clever, invented story about a borrowed cloak from his soldiering days — winning himself a real cloak and a place by the fire for the night. - Eumaeus heads back out into the storm to sleep beside his own herd, the same as every night his master has been gone. The Boy Who Collected Starlight | Cozy Bedtime Story For Adults

This is a gentle bedtime story about a boy who catches a falling star in a jam jar and carries it home through a town that's lost its light. Overview: Tonight's video is a departure from Jacob's usual meditations — a simple, magical children's-style bedtime story for anyone who misses the wonder of the tales they fell asleep to as a kid. A boy named Wren finds a star that's fallen from the sky and lost its glow, and carries it through his sleepy town, giving pieces of its light back to everything that's gone dark: porch lamps, a well, fireflies, a fussing baby, a frightened scarecrow. It's a story about the strange truth that giving light away doesn't use it up — it grows it. What's covered in this video: - The story opens with Wren noticing a falling star and rescuing it in an old jam jar. - The middle follows Wren through the town of Lantern's End, giving small pieces of the star's light back to porch lamps, a well, fireflies, a bridge full of fish, a baby's nightlight, a church steeple, and a scarecrow. - The story closes with the star returning to the sky and Wren drifting off to sleep, having given away light without ever running out of it. Mentioned in this video: bedtime story, sleep story, children's bedtime story for adults, wonder, magic, a boy and a falling star, giving and generosity, Lantern's End, Dream With Jacob, Jacob. There's a particular kind of magic in the stories we fell asleep to as kids — the ones where a small kindness could light up a whole town. Tonight's story is a little homage to that feeling, and to the very first videos on this channel. What's a bedtime story you remember from when you were young?
