Belly Button Musings

Harinder Virdee

"Belly Button Musings" is a podcast for anyone who wants to experience whimsical wisdom pulled from the navel. Each episode looks at an aspect of life chosen through intuition and experienced through life. The belly button is seen as spiritual and symbolic in many traditions representing a connection to the cosmic, the universe and ancestral wisdom. In yoga and Eastern philosophies, the navel is associated with the vital energy centre known as Manipura Chakra.    We share stories and gently explore life themes to improve our relationship to our lives, appreciating we are not alone in our experiences. We contemplate through the navel, with the energy of a light shower of rain, reflections and learnings to provide a new awareness and insight into how a life could be lived.

Feng Shui from the Inside Out

In this episode of the Belly Button Musings podcast, host Harinder Virdee is joined by internationally acclaimed Feng Shui expert Cathi Hargaden for a deep dive into the ancient art of Feng Shui — and how it applies not just to our homes, but to the "home" of the self. Drawing on over 30 years of experience and visits to more than 11,000 homes worldwide, Cathi explains how our external environments — clutter, colour, architecture, even the products we buy — mirror our internal state, and vice versa. The conversation moves from the five elements (wood, metal, water, fire, earth) and how they correspond to our organs and emotions, through to the "rooms within us" that remain unopened due to fear or shame, and the power of breath to clear inner clutter. Cathi and Harinder also explore how energy lingers in spaces and objects — from the imprint of a home's previous occupants to the energy poured into the things we buy and eat — and why clearing, cleansing and intention-setting matter both in our homes and within ourselves. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN What Feng Shui actually means and its 4,000-year-old origins in China How our homes act as a mirror for our internal emotional and physical state The five elements of Feng Shui and how each corresponds to a bodily organ Why breathwork is a form of internal Feng Shui and decluttering How energy from previous occupants, workers, and even manufacturers can linger in a space or object Simple everyday practices for cleansing and inviting new energy into your home and life KEY TAKEAWAYSThe Outer World Reflects the Inner World – Cathi explains that clutter, colour choices and the state of a home consistently reflect a person's health and emotional state, and that this relationship flows in both directions. The Five Elements Live Within Us – Wood, fire, earth, metal and water aren't just design principles; they correspond directly to the liver, heart, stomach, lungs and kidneys, meaning imbalance in the home can echo imbalance in the body. Breath as Inner Feng Shui – Deep, consistent breathing—particularly belly breathing—is presented as a way to "declutter" internally, oxygenate the body, and support the immune system. Energy Lingers in Spaces and Objects – From the emotional residue left by a home's previous residents to the energy embedded in mass-produced goods, Cathi encourages awareness of what we bring into our lives and spaces. Small Rituals Create Big Shifts – Simple acts like cleansing a new home with incense, fixing a leaking tap, or tidying a front doorstep are framed as meaningful ways to shift energy and support wellbeing. BEST MOMENTS "Feng Shui is all about what is your environment talking to you about? It's got a message, what is it saying?" "There are many rooms within us as humans that have never been opened... because of fear, shame, or not wanting to see that aspect of the humanity within ourselves." "You're doing acupuncture in the house. You're taking away what's blocked." "If you don't discern what has to go, eventually when we all go, somebody else decides." 3. To Feel It All

    22 June

    To Feel It All

In this deeply introspective episode, Harinder Virdee explores the profound lessons we can learn from the natural world about vulnerability, presence, and resilience. Observing how flowers and trees remain open to the world despite the risk of being picked or broken, Harinder contrasts nature's unwavering authenticity with the human tendency to build walls after experiencing betrayal, hurt, or disrespect.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Nature models ultimate presence: Flora and fauna simply exist as they are, without holding back, remaining fully present regardless of their environment or external threats. Trauma changes our baseline: Human experiences like betrayal, loss of trust, or disrespect often lead us to close ourselves off and change our natural behaviours as a learned defence mechanism. Protection comes at a cost: Closing ourselves off to protect against pain and hurt inadvertently slices away our capacity to experience joy, connection, and the full richness of life. Vulnerability is an act of bravery: True courage lies in remaining emotionally open and choosing to show up authentically every day, even when past hurts tempt us to build impenetrable walls. Embrace the daily reset: Adopting a mindset that allows us to approach each day anew helps maintain an open heart, making it possible to fully experience both the storms and the sunshine. BEST MOMENTS "More often than not, regardless of how the environment is moving around it or with other interactions, it stays as it is. It focuses on being." "A flower being so vulnerable that it would allow itself to be picked... The same thing with a tree. There is no guarantee a tree would be left alone." "The more and more I experience pain, hurt, anguish, suffering, I decide I'm going to change the way I'm going to respond to whatever that experience was, that I'm not going to stand for it." "To feel it all requires an open heart. To be affected, to feel it all, we would have to be in a place of presence." "How would I know the sunshine from the rain if I wasn't willing to go and stand in both?" Follow My Groove

In this deeply resonant episode, Harinder sits down with her delightful friend and DJ, Meera Patel, to explore the profound impact of sound on the human body and spirit. Transitioning from the club scene to the world of intentional soundscapes, Mira shares her vision for using frequencies to help people heal, relax, and connect on a cellular level.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Different frequencies and instruments have varying effects on the body, reaching us at a deep level to either deeply relax the nervous system or release trapped physical and emotional energy. While club and bar settings offer a place to dance, they often lack the curated, intentional space required for people to truly heal and connect with the music. Setting a clear, positive intention both as a practitioner clearing the space and as a participant receiving the sound is crucial for a safe and effective sound bath experience. You do not need to attend a formal gong bath to experience sound healing; simple daily practices like chanting "Om" or humming can effectively calm the mind and create a regulating vibration within the body. Tuning into the ambient noises of the natural world, such as the uplifting song of birds or the humming of bees, can instantly ground us and elevate our mood. BEST MOMENTS "I just don't feel like playing in bars and clubs... is the best experience for people to really feel and connect with sounds. I just don't think those environments are curated in a way for you to really heal."  "I saw two members of my then-favorite K-pop band, and they were just dancing in this vision... I think it was probably the first time in my life I actually felt joy in my right hip."  "The sound just felt like it was breaking my soul. I felt like my innards were being shattered against the rocks."  "When you hum, you can feel that sound reverberating around the body... you can just hum to yourself and tune yourself to an intention that you might have."  "Just because of how going through those sound baths have made me feel, and coming out of it, I was like, 'Oh wow, something feels like it's always shifted, and I don't always know what, but eventually it comes to me.'"  GUEST BIO: “My journey into the world of music began 10 years ago when I stepped into my first creative development workshop. Since then, I followed my intuition to become a DJ, which has led me more recently into wanting to explore the power of sound for healing and learning about its benefits.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harinderkv LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/harinder-virdee-73a54630 HOST BIO I am Harinder. Inside Out

In this episode, Harinder Virdee is joined by her close friend Alicia for a deep dive into the concept of living Inside Out. Together, they unpack the invisible but palpable world of human energy, exploring how our internal state continuously projects outward into our environments. They both share personal stories that illustrate how we naturally attune to the emotional frequencies around us.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Whatever emotional state we harbor internally is inevitably projected outward, shaping our physical experiences and influencing how others perceive and interact with us. Human beings naturally resonate with each other’s energetic frequencies, much like tuning forks. We easily absorb either the calm aura or the frantic anxiety of those nearby unless we remain firmly grounded. When external emotional waves become overwhelming, we retain the power to turn off our "auto-attunement" button. Through intentional breathing and returning to body awareness, we can choose to vibrate at our own frequency instead. The boundaries of what we believe is possible for our lives are often inherited from past environments. By altering our internal concepts of self-worth and capability, we inherently shift the external trajectory of our lives. Ultimately, the hard line between "inside" and "outside" is an illusion. Energy flows in a continuous, reciprocal loop, meaning that taking responsibility for our inner landscape is the ultimate form of agency. QUOTES "Whatever is going on inside gets projected outside. If we don't know what we're experiencing on the inside, then we can be pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised by what's going on on the outside."  "This auto-attunement that I have, I choose to turn that button off. I choose to now become analog instead and to take back my thoughts and feelings..."  "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."  "What you feel on the inside is what you're telling the rest of the world. It's like laying the groundwork for how you want people to treat you."  "The magic is happening on that line right there between inside and outside. That choice moment, that decision moment."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/harinderkv LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/harinder-virdee-73a54630 HOST BIO I am Harinder. 6. Almost

    1 June

    Almost

Sometimes life delivers an almost, leaving us wondering if it is truly enough or if we desperately need more. It is easy to look at a situation, a creation, or a relationship that is not quite perfect and feel a deep sense of lack. Projecting sadness, anger, or self-righteousness onto these moments makes everything wilt and diminish under our gaze. But what happens when we shift that perspective? Choosing to look through the eyes of love can instantly transform an imperfect reality into something full, abundant, and overflowing. This introspective journey explores how our internal lens shapes our external world. By examining these quiet reflections, we can learn to stop throwing our disappointment onto what is right in front of us. It is all about finding peace, recognising abundance, and discovering the profound beauty hidden within the spaces of almost. KEYTAKEAWAYS: Perfection is not a prerequisite for fulfilment; an almost can be entirely enough depending on how it is perceived. Viewing incomplete situations through the eyes of love fosters a profound sense of abundance and overflow. Projecting anger, sadness, or disappointment onto a connection artificially creates a feeling of lack. Our emotional state acts as a lens that can cause the things and people around us to flourish or wilt. Catching ourselves when we project self-righteousness allows us to appreciate what is already there rather than throwing it over the next thing. QUOTES: Today's lint from the navel is almost. And the question I'm asking myself is, when it's almost, is that enough? Or do I need more? If I look at it through the eyes of love, do I overflow? When I project that onto something, it creates a feeling of lack. How does that diminish and wilt under my gaze? 7. The Voyage of the Golden Leaf

    25 May

The Voyage of the Golden Leaf

Sometimes the most profound wisdom comes from simply watching the autumn wind. We often struggle with the natural urge to break free, explore the unknown, and find our true place in the world. This reflection draws inspiration from a single, beautiful golden leaf shedding its branch on a dark, drenched afternoon in central London. It captures the familiar, eternal tussle between holding on for safety and surrendering to the chaotic flow of life. By observing this delicate dance of nature, we can uncover deep truths about our own adolescent desires, the courage required to step into our fullest potential, and the beauty of trusting where the journey takes us. Whether we land gently or are tossed by the storm, making the choice to go forth and risk it all is a magnificent destiny in itself. Key Takeaways Nature often mirrors our own internal struggles, perfectly illustrating the tension between seeking independence and remaining in a place of safety. Embracing uncertainty and surrendering to the natural flow of life allows us to truly be ourselves, regardless of external circumstances. The process of growing up and leaving the familiar behind requires immense courage, driven by curiosity and the longing to fulfil our deepest potential. Hardships and unpredictable outcomes are natural elements of any journey, but making the active choice to experience them is a brave and worthwhile destiny. Taking a moment to pause and observe the everyday world around us can reveal profound insights and deep connections to our own past experiences. Quotes "That familiar, eternal tussle between an adolescent, a youth, a young person, and authority." "This wanting to go out into the big wide world to explore, to find themselves." "The leaf had this innate ability to be itself fully, regardless of what was happening around it." "It didn't know what was in store for it. It just went in the direction of life, the direction of nature." "It had fulfilled what it had been born to do, whether it was appreciated or not, that that too was a great destiny." Shiny Objects and the Magnetic Pull of the Heart

KEY TAKEAWAYS The allure we feel toward certain things is often an energetic frequency match that hits us on a visceral level rather than a logical one. We often create elaborate internal fantasies about how acquiring a "shiny thing" will make us more powerful, unique, or worthy. The drive to possess something can lead to an inner battle where the ego throws a tantrum, sometimes at a great personal expense. Once the high of the acquisition fades, we often find ourselves back in the exact same emotional state we were in before. Pausing to ask what a desire gives us that we don’t already have helps us align our choices with our true selves. QUOTES "It's like an energetic frequency match. And sometimes it's not just the head that's turned. Sometimes it's deeply visceral." "We start making up stories, don't we? Of how better our lives are going to be if we acquire that thing." "Sometimes we seek to acquire something and it just ends up being something that we've collected, put on the shelf for later, or forgotten about." "If I see a pastry that I really love, that's it, I'm going for it." "Some shiny things are just meant to be looked at, appreciated, and left right there."
