Very informative

I went to school with Barry, and most of us could recognise that he was different. I just can’t imagine giving him $10 let alone my life savings…..it just goes to show that the small amount of respectability provided by supposedly ‘professional’ associations can become a cloak for not only criminal intentions, but also incompetence…..as happened in NZ many times prior to Barry’s offending.

Five star content outshines two star delivery

This series is about the unraveling of the activities of a white collar thief in a small town in New Zealand. For me, the series can be described across the following four aspects; the delivery, the professionals, the victims, the verdict (and therefore the thief).

The delivery I found highly distracting. The commentator spends too much time trying to be clever, rather than letting the story “tell itself”. Regrettably, she also spends too much time revealing her own biases.….examples; Dunedin isn’t cold, it isn’t freezing, it’s FREEZING…(like Oslo right…well no); be wary of people wearing a particular type of shoe; life’s too short to suffer amateur dramatic productions…..it’s all pretty “judgey”.

The professionals brought into explain aspects of the case, add insight into the how the story unfolded, and perhaps how the offender’s thought processes allowed such a crime to develop over a considerable period of time, came across authoritatively and succinctly. Quite fascinating.

The real heroes of the story are the victims of the fraud. Their testimony is at times, simply heartbreaking. It certainly comes across that the crimes were committed against ordinary people whose lives have been forever changed. As a general statement, they were not “wealthy”, nor were they specifically foolish in their actions leading to being targeted by the fraudster. One is left feeling nothing but compassion for their ongoing positions.

Compassion is one thing that cannot be attributed to the thief. There aren’t many humans lower on the food chain. He will serve his time, then leave jail a reasonably young man to live a no doubt reasonably comfortable life - in fact it may be more than comfortable given nobody is quite sure what happened to the estimated NZ$15m involved. Life can indeed be unfair.

JB Dunedin ,

Sad get courageous

Very sad. Sad stories told by brave courageous people.
