    Hey People! Welcome to the very first episode of the #ASKNMD Podcast. Our Guest Nelly-Helen Neji Ebruka is an award-winning law student, space enthusiast and young pan-African leader with a dire passion for the legal aspect of space exploration and a desire to change the narratives of space science education in Nigeria and Africa. She has currently been listed as one of the tops under 30 young innovators contributing to the growth of the African Space industry. Her passion for space inspired her to co-found the Learnspace foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting space education and awareness in Nigeria and Africa at large. Currently, she is a member of the Spacehub Team, an organisation that is building the African space ecosystem and provides a platform for Africans to get involved in space. She is a mentee under the UN space for Women mentorship program and also an enthusiastic volunteer of the space generation advisory council. PS: This episode was recorded by early October 2020. Please have that in mind as some things might have changed by the time you are listening.

    The space environment

    When designing technology for space it is important to get it right the first time. Once in space there is no going back to fix it.   I try as much as possible to describe what there is about the space environment that requires extra rigor in designing for space.     What are satellites made of?

    So we have an idea what an artificial satellite is and why one would send one to space.   Now how about what it is actually made of? What does it contain? What parts does it have?   Again it is not easy to make it come across as simply as it truly is (Note simple does not mean easy. Some simple things can be quite difficult). In this video I try to show you how simple a satellite can actually be.   Enjoy!!

    Why do we send satellites to space?

    I used to think it was obvious until this question kept coming up again and again...  Over time I noticed "communication" is the first and sometimes the only thing most people think about. Yes there are communication satellites in orbit but in general... why space?  Was there not another way? Why go through the trouble?   Not easy to break this down in simple terms, but I try... I hope it works.   Enjoy!

    Intro

    I am starting a series of short videos to demystify space missions. This is for everyone who is interested and may not really know what it is all about. I will talk about aspects including:  - What is a satellite?  - Why do we send stuff to space to begin with?  - Why should Africans have a minimum awareness about space technology  - What sort of skills build a satellite? - What sort of skills build a space mission?  - ... and much more!   I try as much as possible to bring it "down to earth" so that everyone, especially in Africa, can see that indeed today, anyone can be a part of space activities.   Stay tuned
