The Body Reset: How Women Should Eat & Exercise for Health, Fat Loss, & Energy

Today's episode is a MUST listen.  You will learn the surprising science of women’s exercise and nutrition, the mistakes you’re making, and the simple changes that lead to better health and longevity.  For way too long, fitness and nutrition have been based on research done almost exclusively on men, and the women who have been following those strategies are left wondering why the fitness and nutrition guidelines don’t work for their bodies.  That changes today. In this firecracker of an episode, Mel sits down with Dr. Stacy Sims, a world-renowned exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist, to break down exactly how you, as a woman, should be eating, training, and recovering for your hormones, metabolism, and overall health. Dr. Sims reveals why traditional fitness advice is failing women.  She talks about how intermittent fasting drains your energy and why your workouts leave you exhausted instead of strong.  She explains why fasted workouts, calorie restriction, and extreme cardio can actually make it harder to lose weight and what you should be doing instead to build muscle, burn fat, and feel amazing at every stage of life. Ever wonder why men seem to drop weight faster than you? Or why your workouts feel great one week and awful the next? There’s a reason for that.  Dr. Sims will tell you, it’s all in your hormones. Inside this episode, you’ll learn: -Why women should NEVER train like men (and what to do instead) -The #1 mistake you’re making in the gym—and how to fix it -The truth about fasted workouts (spoiler: they might be wrecking your metabolism) -Why eating too little could be making you gain fat—not lose it -How to work with your cycle for better energy, results, and recovery -What every woman needs to know about perimenopause and menopause training If you’ve ever felt like your diet and workout plan isn’t working, this episode will change the way you approach fitness and nutrition forever. 3. Auckland Grammar School Headmaster: The Truth About Teenage Boys & NZ Education System!

    09/07/2025

Auckland Grammar School Headmaster: The Truth About Teenage Boys & NZ Education System!

Tim O’Connor is the long-standing headmaster of Auckland Grammar School. When he started the job in 2012 he became only the 11th headmaster at Grammar in the schools 156 year history. In this conversation, Tim shares the highs and lows of his 13-years at Grammar.  And his 10 years as the head of my old school, PNBHS, before that. This podcast offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the culture, discipline, and deep traditions that define Auckland Grammar. We talk about everything from navigating risky behaviors and toxic masculinity to fostering mental resilience and identity in teenage boys. Tim opens about his own path through education, the mentors who shaped him, and the leadership lessons he picked up at Harvard that now guide his everyday decision-making. This is more than a conversation about a school. It’s a masterclass in leadership, vulnerability, and the future of education in a digital world. It’s hard to think of many people who have done as much for young men in New Zealand in this century as what Tim O’Connor has done. I enjoyed my time with Tim, and I think you will too.     *** This episode is sponsored by Generate Kiwisaver. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Stacy Sims, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist, nutrition scientist, and expert in female-specific nutrition and training for health, performance, and longevity. We discuss which exercise and nutrition protocols are ideal for women based on their age and particular goals. We discuss whether women should train fasted, when and what to eat pre- and post-training, and how the menstrual cycle impacts training and nutrition needs. We also explain how to use a combination of resistance, high-intensity, and sprint interval training to effectively improve body composition, hormones, and cardiometabolic health, offset cognitive decline, and promote longevity.  We also discuss supplements and caffeine, the unique sleep needs of women based on age, whether women should use deliberate cold exposure, and how saunas can improve symptoms of hot flashes and benefit athletic performance. Dr. Sims challenges common misconceptions about women’s health and fitness and explains why certain types of cardio, caloric restriction, and low-protein diets can be harmful to women’s metabolic health. 5. Janelle Booker - Living With ADHD

    03/11/2024

Janelle Booker - Living With ADHD

In this long-awaited Academy of Imperfection, we chat to psychologist Janelle Booker, who specialises in ADHD and Highly Sensitive Person trait. There is SO MUCH to learn (and love) about an ADHD brain. We learn how ADHDers are often extremely creative, innovative, and talented, and in the right conditions, absolutely thrive. However, ADHDers may struggle with executive functions such as time keeping, organisation and emotional regulation, which can make daily life really hard and exhausting. People with ADHD can be more susceptible to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as dopamine boosting activities such as risk-taking behaviour, addiction and disordered eating. This is why seeking the right diagnosis and treatment plan can be really impactful.  With school as a battleground, and friendships sometimes hard to maintain, Hugh, Ryan and Josh chat through how neurotypical people can be better allies and support systems to ADHDers, as friends, partners, employers, and parents. On a HSP note (not the snack pack, unfortunately), we bet a few of you might resonate with Janelle’s explanation, especially since 15-20% of the population have the Highly Sensitive Person trait. Janelle, it was an absolute pleasure, and we can’t believe we didn’t do this sooner. Janelle is based in Western Australia, and her practice Janelle Booker Psychology, will be accepting new clients in February 2025. 7. When ADHD meets perimenopause | Petra & friends (with special guest Dr Greg Finucane)

    05/03/2025

When ADHD meets perimenopause | Petra & friends (with special guest Dr Greg Finucane)

What does happen when ADHD meets perimenopause? Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Greg Finucane joins us to help untangle this growing connection. Recently, I have found myself navigating the surprising emotions and 'aha!' moments that can accompany an ADHD diagnosis. It was like the jigsaw puzzle of my life found some lost pieces, giving me a clearer picture of how I fit together and fit into the world. My exploration leads us through how diagnosis can reshape family bonds and support communication, including a heartfelt conversation with my husband, reflecting on how awareness of ADHD is contributing to reforming our marriage and parenting journey. Because everyone (and every brain) is unique, there are many voices in this episode to help weave together stories that breathe life into the complex realities of ADHD, from managing in creative careers to the complexity of organisational challenges faced by those undiagnosed. Conversations with women like Abigail and Bella open windows into alternative approaches to managing symptoms, from holistic practices to embracing the gifts that ADHD brings. This episode is a rallying cry for (self) compassion and acceptance, while providing practical strategies for self-organisation. I'm convinced wāhine like you and me can rewrite negative narratives from our youth and society to uncover the possibilities of living fully and intentionally with whatever labels we choose to inhabit. Mel Robbins: How to Use the ‘Let Them Theory’ (A Life Changing Mindset Hack That 15 Million People Can’t Stop Talking About)

Have you ever let someone just be themselves? How do you remind yourself what’s in your control? Today, Jay  sits down with best-selling author and motivational speaker Mel Robbins to discuss her revolutionary “Let Them Theory.” Mel introduces a powerful mindset tool designed to help listeners take control of their thoughts, actions, and emotions while letting go of what they cannot control. This conversation dives into the heart of personal growth, resilience, and building a life centered on peace and purpose. Mel begins by explaining the core of the “Let Them Theory,” which is about recognizing the limits of control. She emphasizes the importance of letting others be who they are, accepting situations as they unfold, and redirecting focus to what’s within your power. Through vivid examples, Mel demonstrates how this approach can reduce stress, strengthen relationships, and reclaim wasted energy. Jay and Mel also explore the emotional weight of unmet expectations and the difference between “Let It Go” and “Let Them.” Mel shares how this subtle shift in mindset fosters empowerment rather than passivity. They also discuss the complexities of adult friendships and how they evolve over time. Mel introduces the three pillars of adult friendship—proximity, timing, and energy—and explains how these factors influence the ebb and flow of connections. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Identify What You Can Control How to Handle Stressful Situations at Work How to Set Boundaries with Difficult People How to Let Go of Unmet Expectations How to Manage Toxic Relationships Effectively How to Build Meaningful Adult Friendships How to Reclaim Energy Wasted on Others Remember, you don’t need to have it all figured out.
