Mustafa Suleyman, Artificial Intelligence pioneer: People should be healthily afraid of AI

BBC presenter Amol Rajan speaks to the British artificial intelligence entrepreneur Mustafa Suleyman, Chief Executive of Microsoft AI. He believes in the enormous potential of AI to be a force for good in the world, changing how we live and work for the better. He is committed to developing a humanist superintelligence, one that always works to serve people and never vice versa. But he remains clear about what he sees as the risks, issuing a warning that without the right ethical safeguards, AI could grow powerful enough to overwhelm humanity. "As somebody who’s deeply techno-optimistic, I invite people to be also healthily afraid and sceptical," he says. The son of a London taxi-driver and a nurse, he dropped out of Oxford University and by his mid-twenties had co-founded DeepMind, the pioneering artificial intelligence research lab. By the time it was sold to Google four years later in 2014, it was worth a reported $400 million. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. Gabriel Zuchtreigel, Director of Pompeii: Archaeology is the most democratic form of history

Michael Berkeley speaks to Gabriel Zuchtreigel, Director of Pompeii in Southern Italy, one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. History, he says, comes alive through archaeology, helping us to appreciate our shared humanity with those who lived thousands of years ago, and providing a more democratic way of learning about the past. Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that erupted and buried Pompeii in ash and pumice, did not distinguish between the wealthy and the poor in its victims. Gabriel Zuchtriegel was appointed Director of Pompeii in 2021, and has since begun a major excavation, and made a number of significant finds. But it is walking around the site at night, emptied of the crowds, that he feels the ancient city come alive. It is as if, he says, the inhabitants only left a few minutes ago. Previewing India's AI Impact Summit with MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan

Since 2023, a series of global AI summits has brought together world leaders to advance international dialogue and cooperation on artificial intelligence. Building on this momentum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the India AI Impact Summit, which will take place in New Delhi in February 2026. As the first summit in the series to be hosted in a Global South country, the AI Impact Summit aims to amplify Global South perspectives and advance concrete action to address both the opportunities and risks of AI. On December 8, 2025, the CSIS Wadhwani AI Center hosted S. Krishnan, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), for a livestreamed fireside chat with Wadhwani AI Center Senior Adviser Gregory C. Allen. Secretary Krishnan, who leads India’s national AI strategy, will outline India’s policy priorities and share insights into the goals and global aspirations shaping the upcoming AI Impact Summit. He will also offer a comprehensive look at the central role MeitY plays in driving innovation across India’s AI ecosystem. Secretary Krishnan brings more than 35 years of experience in public service, having joined the Indian Administrative Service in 1989. Prior to his current role, he served as the Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department in the Government of Tamil Nadu. He has also served as Senior Advisor in the Office of the Executive Director for India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bhutan at the International Monetary Fund, and has represented India in the G20 Expert Groups on International Financial Architecture and Global Financial Safety Nets. Secretary Krishnan holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi.

La opción de Donald Trump para controlar Groenlandia sin tener que comprarla o invadirla: "Es relativamente sencillo"

Pocos días después de entrar en Venezuela y capturar a Nicolás Maduro, el presidente de EEUU puso el foco en Groenlandia, un territorio autónomo que depende de Dinamarca. Donald Trump aseguró ante los medios que su país necesitaba por "Seguridad Nacional" hacerse con el control de la zona: "Es muy estratégica. Ahora mismo Groenlandia está llena de barcos chinos y rusos por todas partes. Necesitamos Groenlandia desde el punto de la Seguridad Nacional, y Dinamarca no va a poder hacerlo". Aunque poco después se rebajó el tono hablando ya no de invasión, sino de compra del territorio, la idea de una intervención terrestre no quedó del todo descartada. Pero, ¿es posible que esto llegue a suceder? Fernando Arancón y Eduardo Saldaña lo consideran un "escenario poco probable", pero que no se podría llegar a descartar del todo. La gran barrera de Trump en Groenlandia: la política medioambiental "Yo no pongo la mano en el fuego por nada, pero hay que separar la arena de la paja. Rusia y China tienen muy poca influencia en Groenlandia y de esto ya se ha encargado la propia Dinamarca y la propia Unión Europea, además de Estados Unidos, un país que tiene mucha influencia en Groenlandia a través de una amplia presencia militar que puede aumentar casi a voluntad sin consultar ni con Dinamarca ni con la propia Groenlandia", explican en la sección 'El Orden Mundial' de Julia en la onda. Y entonces por qué habla Trump de compra o invasión? Porque la gran barrera que tiene Estados Unidos es que los recursos naturales de la isla están muy limitados por la amplia legislación medioambiental que tienen tanto los groenlandeses como los daneses: "Los groenlandeses son los primeros que no quieren esa explotación de recursos naturales, en buena medida porque es Dinamarca quien subvenciona la economía local. Groenlandia es deficitaria y Dinamarca pone el dinero que falta para que los groenlandeses puedan tener un nivel de vida bastante adecuado". La brecha entre Groenlandia y Dinamarca que puede aprovechar Trump Dinamarca no se opone "especialmente" a que Estados Unidos tenga más presencia en Groenlandia y, de hecho, está "bastante de acuerdo" con lo que puede plantear, pero el problema son "las formas" de Donald Trump coqueteando con la idea de una invasión. Ante esto, no le queda otra opción que negarse, tanto a esa idea de invasión como a la alternativa de compra que se planteó desde la Administración de Estados Unidos. Entonces, ¿qué opción le queda al presidente Trump? El escenario más probable es que "Estados Unidos intente fomentar el independentismo groenlandés a través de un referéndum de independencia desde Dinamarca". De esta manera, podrían negociar la compra del territorio con un Estado groenlandés independientes sin que esté bajo el paraguas ni de Dinamarca, ni de la Unión Europea: "Un país deficitario puede ser más fácil de comprar". "No pensemos que los daneses y los groenlandeses se llevan genial. Históricamente, ha habido mucha tensión entre ambos gobiernos y hay un movimiento independentista groenlandés curioso. Es ahí donde van a intentar tensar la cuerda. De hecho, han planteado una reunión con los delegados groenlandeses precisamente para eso", explican. Learn more about your ad choices.
