Learn more about your ad choices. The Future of the Iranian Regime: Jeffrey Feltman

Michael speaks with former Ambassador Jeffrey Feltman about the precarious state of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the latest wave of mass protests there. Jeff analyzes the regime's use of brutality, coercion, and a total internet blackout to quiet the streets, while arguing that survival does not equal success. Jeffrey also discusses the economic catastrophe Iran faces, the strategic ambiguity surrounding the White House's next moves following new sanctions, and the outlook for regional instability.

Shifting Defense Focus: Border Security, Diplomacy, and Industrial Revamp in the 2026 National Defense Strategy

Welcome to your weekly DoD briefing, listeners. The biggest headline this week: a brief government shutdown hit the Pentagon on January 31 as the Senate passed the $839 billion fiscal 2026 defense spending package, now awaiting House action. Air and Space Forces Magazine reports it's likely to resolve quickly, fully funding 24 Air Force F-35As, adding $900 million for E-7 Wedgetail radar planes, and $115 million for an extra F-15EX fighter. This caps a whirlwind of changes from the new 2026 National Defense Strategy, released January 23 by Secretary Pete Hegseth's Department of War. It prioritizes defending the homeland with border security, counter-narcotics, and the Golden Dome missile shield against barrages and drones. Hegseth wrote, "We recognize that it is neither America’s duty nor in our nation’s interest to act everywhere on our own." The strategy shifts to "realistic diplomacy" with China for de-escalation, while pushing allies to share burdens—Europe defends itself, South Korea handles more against North Korea. Budget highlights include a 3.8% pay raise for troops and mental health studies for drone pilots, per House Appropriations docs. New executive orders ban major contractors' stock buybacks to speed procurement, supercharging the industrial base with AI and production ramps. For American citizens, this means safer borders and skies, but potential National Guard shifts—like extensions in D.C.—could affect local communities. Businesses gain from industrial revival and faster buys, though scrutiny tightens. States may see more military aid on drugs and migration, easing local strains. Globally, it signals less U.S. adventurism, deterring China without confrontation, as Brookings expert Michael O’Hanlon notes: "We’re not looking to defeat China or chase military supremacy." Watch the FY27 budget in early February for force posture details, like Caribbean bases. Army's Dark Eagle hypersonic missile fields by spring 2026. Can the Transatlantic Alliance Survive the Trump Presidency?

As US–European relations face renewed strain under President Trump, this episode explores what the crisis means for NATO, European security and the United Kingdom. In this episode, Neil Melvin is joined by RUSI Distinguished Fellow Sir David Lidington to discuss the growing crisis in transatlantic relations, from the Greenland dispute and uncertainty over US security commitments to the wider impact of Russia's war in Ukraine and shifting US strategy, and to assess what these changes mean for Europe's security order and the UK's strategic choices. The discussion explores: - The resilience of Europe's security order amid transatlantic tension. - The implications of the Greenland crisis for NATO and European unity. - How NATO, the EU and smaller groupings are adapting to a harsher security environment. - The future of the Ukraine war and its impact on European security. - Whether NATO and the transatlantic relationship can endure. - How the UK should position itself in a changing Euro-Atlantic landscape. Recorded on Tuesday 20 January 2026.

E55 – Christine Fox: the REAL Charlie

There is a strange set of organizations that live betweenindustry and government called Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) and University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs). They play an important—but largely misunderstood role—in national security. What better way to understand it all than with a guest who’sone of the most famous pop-culture examples: Christine Fox. She was the real person who was portrayed as ‘Charlie’,Maverick’s civilian love interest, in Top Gun! She spent 40+ years working as an analyst in UARCs and a civilian leader at the Pentagon, culminating in serving as the acting Deputy Secretary of Defense. Today, she continues to serve as a Fellow at Johns HopkinsUniversity’s Applied Physics Lab (JHU APL), which is the nation’s largest UARC. Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv: We're fighting to survive

‘We're fighting to survive in our home town, in our country, and at the same time we're fighting for our future, for our independence’ Nick Robinson speaks to Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv, about Ukraine’s war with Russia as it approaches its fourth year. Born behind the Iron Curtain in 1971, he’s arguably best-known as a former heavyweight boxing world champion who made his name in the ring during the 1990s and 2000s. Having hung up his gloves following a series of injuries, when his native Ukraine endured political upheaval through the Orange Revolution, Vitali’s attentions turned to the political arena. Following a short stint in the Ukrainian Parliament, where he aligned with pro-Europeans, Vitali was elected mayor of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv in 2014 after heavily campaigning against corruption. But his greatest challenge in politics, and indeed even greater than becoming a world champion boxer, came when Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Thank you to the Political Thinking with Nick Robinson team for their help in making this programme. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. The best interviews from the BBC, including episodes with Artificial Intelligence pioneer Mustafa Suleyman, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, and fantasy author Sir Philip Pullman.
