Day 1 Allies: Prepping for Residency with a PHARMACIST

Starting R1 this July? We've got your back. This episode kicks off our Day 1 Allies series, a campaign to support new residents as they join the clinical team. We're starting with a vital but sometimes misunderstood member of the healthcare team: the pharmacist. Host Cameron Wong, MD (congrats to him as he begins R1!) sits down with Clement Chan, PharmD ACPR, to explore how pharmacists support residents, collaborate on patient care, and bring clinical expertise to the bedside. Fun fact: Clement and Cameron met on a rotation, and the experience left a big impression. In this episode, we answer some big questions: What exactly does a pharmacist do in a hospital setting? Do pharmacists see patients directly? How do they help residents succeed, especially in those high-stress early days? And yes… do they actually know every drug (and colour)? Conversations with Jillian - Interview with Dr. Damon Dagnone [04]

Dr. Dagnone is an attending physician in the Emergency Room with Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and is an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Queen's University. He was the lead applicant for a transformative Fundamental Innovations in Residency Education (FIRE) proposal, which saw the concurrent launch of 29 postgraduate specialty programs to competency-based curriculums. Dr. Dagnone is also the author of Finding Our Way Home: A family's story of life, love, and loss. Special note to viewers: this interview was recorded prior to Dr. Dagnone accepting a position with the Royal College as the Director, Standards and Accreditation. Viewer discretion is advised.

Conversations with Jillian - Interview with Dr. Anne Hennessy [05]

In the first episode of a special series entitled, Finding a way back to balance: Wisdom from physician artists, host Jillian Horton, MD, FRCPC speaks with Anne Hennessy, MD, FRCPC, about her passion for painting. Together they discuss the importance of self-care and (re)discovery of one's human side through play that physicians can often set aside. They also explore being mindful to create space for a pursuit that brings joy so that in times of struggle or great difficulty, physicians can find their way "back to balance." Dr. Hennessy is a community-based psychiatrist and consultant to Psychogeriatric Outreach at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre in Ottawa. She is a clinical lecturer with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa and teaches mindfulness-based coping to caregivers who have partners with dementia. Quality Improvement / Amélioration de la qualité

Specialists agree that they need to continuously improve to serve patients with the level of care they deserve. But for many, the concept of quality improvement (QI) can be perceived as a burden or even an 'add on' in an already packed work schedule. Join Lucie Filteau, MD, FRCPC and Sofia Valanci, MD, PhD as they reveal why QI isn't something that is done 'to' doctors – it's something doctors already do for their patients and for themselves. They'll share a myriad of ways to improve practice whilst evolving with the times and unpack how the MOC framework is evolving to recognize QI. After all, CPD doesn't look the same as it did 10 years ago. Get the scoop about the upcoming coaching and mentoring opportunities to support the shift to a more user-friendly concept of continuous quality improvement. You'll hear about possibilities to gain micro-skills on how to have safe and effective conversations with your peers, with the bonus of knowing that many of these conversations can earn you MOC credits. June is National Indigenous History Month. It's a time to celebrate and recognize the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of Indigenous Peoples. And it's a time to reflect on your practice and how you engage with and support your Indigenous patients and colleagues. If we, as medical specialists, reframe how we communicate with Indigenous Peoples across the board, what could this look like? This month's guest, Ryan Giroux, MD, FRCPC, is an advocate for shifting the discourse to a strengths-based approach. How we treat Mother Earth today impacts the health of our future population. Let's take time to reflect on how a collective view of one health, along with a few simple principles, can kickstart happier medical specialists… leading to happier and healthier patients. Join Sarah Funnell, MD, FRCPC as she encourages listeners to consider their responsibility toward a healthier planet. She talks about the long view and the need to not just consider your actions for short term gain, but reflect on those who came before you and those who will inhabit this land long after you're gone. Dr. Funnell asks medical specialists to take into account inequities in vulnerable populations, and how such inequities impact patients in climate sensitive situations.
