    Jesuit Missionaries

The Company of Jesus (to indicate its military spirit) also called "The Society of Jesus", were linguists, explorers and ethnographers. They learned New World Indigenous languages and customs, developed dictionaries and grammars, translated and preserved much of the history and traditions in their documents—which include details of their missions and activities and both the successes and failures of the Jesuits in their attempts to convert Indigenous peoples. In North America, their goal was to bring lost souls to Christianity and they were willing to endure hardships and to shed their blood to succeed. E195. Celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, that is the Second Sunday of Easter, Divine Mercy Sunday is a major feast day in the Catholic Church dedicated to the devotion of God's mercy. Instituted by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000, it stems from revelations to St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-38), offering complete forgiveness of sins and punishment, that is, a plenary indulgence, to those who receive Communion and go to confession. Let's learn more about the theological significance of this feast for many Christians around the world with bible scholar Bishop Robert Barron. Samuel de Champlain journeyed by canoe up the Ottawa River in 1615, through Lake Nipissing, and down Georgian Bay to the heart of the Huron country, near Lake Simcoe. During these journeys, Champlain aided the indigenous Hurons in battles against the Iroquois Confederacy. As a result, the Iroquois became mortal enemies of the French. In 1627, Cardinal Richelieu (1585-1642), chief minister to King Louis the XIII, chartered in a French trading and colonization Company of One Hundred Associates to capitalize on the North American fur trade and to expand French colonies centered on the Saint Lawrence River valley.
