S3. Ep : 42. The Maverick Mind of Miguel de Unamuno.

Welcome back to Spanish Loops, the podcast where we untangle the complex, beautiful, and often turbulent threads of Spanish history, culture, and identity. I’m Jorge, and alongside Fran, we are stepping away from the sun-drenched beaches today to wander into the stormy landscapes of the human intellect. Today, we are dedicating our journey to a man who was a walking contradiction, a restless soul, and arguably the most provocative thinker Spain has ever produced: Miguel de Unamuno. He wasn't just a philosopher or the rector of the prestigious University of Salamanca; Unamuno was a lifelong rebel, a fierce non-conformist who looked at the fracturing Spanish society of the 1920s and 30s and refused to stay silent. As Spain teetered precariously on the edge of a devastating Civil War, Unamuno found himself caught in a violent political crossfire. He famously clashed with dictators, monarchs, and ideologues of every stripe. He was a man who weaponized the written and spoken word, a thinker who believed that to live was to doubt, and to doubt was to be alive. In this episode, we are discuss his agonizing political evolution from his forced exile under the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera to that fateful, legendary day in October 1936. Inside the ceremonial halls of Salamanca, surrounded by armed fascist soldiers, he boldly stared down brutality and uttered his immortal defence of intelligence against brute force. We’ll explore the heavy price he paid for his intellectual independence, his deeply agonizing existential struggles, and how his legacy still mirrors the soul of modern Spain. This isn't just a history lesson; it’s a psychological thriller about a man who chose truth over safety. So, adjust your dials, settle in, and let’s loop into the defiant mind of Miguel de Unamuno. The conversation starts right now. S3, Ep : 40. Eurovision: From Postwar Dream to Global Stage.

What started in 1956 as a modest experiment in unity has evolved into one of the world’s most watched live music events. The Eurovision Song Contest was born under the umbrella of the European Broadcasting Union, inspired by Italy’s Sanremo Festival, with a simple mission: bring countries together through music after the scars of World War II. Just seven nations took part in that first edition. Today, it’s a cultural phenomenon spanning continents, drawing hundreds of millions of viewers. In its early years, Eurovision followed strict rules. Each country submitted one original song, performed live with an orchestra, and juries decided the winner behind closed doors. There was no public vote, no spectacle—just music and a touch of diplomacy. But as the decades passed, the contest adapted. By the late 1990s, televoting entered the scene, giving audiences a direct voice. Today, the results are split between professional juries and public voting, creating a dynamic and sometimes unpredictable outcome. One of the most controversial moments came in 1969, when four countries; Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands—ended in a historic tie. With no tie-breaking rules in place, all four were declared winners. The fallout led to rule changes that still shape the contest today. Beyond the glitter and eccentric performances, Eurovision has developed an undeniable political undercurrent. Neighborly voting patterns, geopolitical tensions, and cultural alliances often influence results, whether openly acknowledged or not. Yet, this complexity is part of its intrigue it reflects Europe as it is, not just as it sings. And then there’s the legacy. Eurovision has launched global icons. ABBA’s victory in 1974 catapulted them to worldwide fame. Céline Dion’s win for Switzerland in 1988 marked the beginning of an extraordinary international career. Even artists who didn’t win, like Olivia Newton-John, found their moment on this stage. From black-and-white broadcasts to dazzling LED productions, Eurovision remains a mirror of its time, equal parts music, spectacle, and subtle strategy. Love it or question it, you can’t ignore it.

S3, Ep : 39. Chopin Mallorca Secrets Love Illness Genius Uncovered.

Frédéric Chopin wasn’t just a composer. He was a fragile genius wrapped in elegance, intensity, and quiet rebellion. Born in 1810, he grew into one of the most poetic voices in music, avoiding grand stages and instead choosing intimate salons where emotion mattered more than applause. By the late 1830s, his life took a dramatic turn when he met the bold and unconventional George Sand. She was everything society wasn’t ready for: a woman who wore men’s clothes, smoked cigars, and perhaps most shocking, published under a male pseudonym to be taken seriously in a man’s world. Their connection? Immediate, intense, and complicated. In 1838, chasing health and hope, they escaped to Mallorca, settling in the haunting monastery of Valldemossa Charterhouse. What was meant to be a Mediterranean healing retreat quickly turned into a beautiful disaster. The weather turned cold and damp, locals grew suspicious of their unconventional relationship, and Chopin’s already fragile lungs worsened under the humidity. He coughed, weakened, and likely battled tuberculosis, yet in that same suffering, something extraordinary happened. Chopin composed some of his most iconic works, including the haunting Preludes, where you can almost hear the rain echoing through stone walls. Meanwhile, Sand became more than a lover: she was caretaker, protector, and emotional anchor. She managed the chaos, fought social rejection, and later immortalized the experience in her book “A Winter in Majorca”. But even strong women have limits. Their relationship, which lasted nearly a decade, slowly cracked under emotional strain, illness, and growing distance. Chopin left Mallorca weaker in body, but richer in music. He died young, at 39, but his legacy? Just Eternal. A love story, a health struggle, and a winter that changed music forever. S3, Ep : 38. Sherry Secrets: Spain’s Legendary Wine Story.

Hey everyone, welcome back to Spanish Loops! We are Jorge and Fran. Today… we’re taking you straight to the south of Spain, where history, culture, and flavor come together in a glass. We’re talking about Sherry. Or as we say in Spain… Jerez. Now here’s the first twist; “Sherry” isn’t even a Spanish word. It’s actually an English adaptation of Jerez, the city where it all began. Over centuries, traders (especially the British) couldn’t quite pronounce Xérès or Jerez, so “Sherry” stuck… andwent global. But this isn’t just wine. This is history in liquid form. We’re going back over 3,000 years, when the Phoenicians first brought vines to this land around Cádiz. Then came the Romans, the Moors, and later the Christian kingdoms, each leaving their mark on what would become one of the oldest wines in the world.   And here’swhere things get really interesting… The massive production? That explosion of popularity? You can thank international trade, especially with England. By the Middle Ages, Sherry was already being exported in huge quantities, becoming a favorite across Europe and turning Jerez into a wine powerhouse. Now let’s talk grapes, because not all wines are created equal. Sherry is mainly made from three types: Palomino — the backbone of most dry Sherries. Pedro Ximénez — rich, sweet, almost syrup-like. Moscatel — aromatic and naturally sweet. And the result? A universe of styles. From the light and salty Fino and Manzanilla, to the deeper, nuttier Amontillado and Oloroso, all the way to those dark, dessert-style wines made from sun-dried grape. What makes it unique? A magical process called flor, (flower), a layer of yeast that transforms the wine as it ages, and the famous solera system, blending generations of wine into one consistent flavor. So today, we’re not just drinking Sherry… We’re tasting centuries of conquest, trade, culture and identity. Stay with us. This story gets even better.

S3, Ep : 37. Sant Jordi: Love, Roses & Books.

Hola Chicos! Welcome back to Spanish Loops! Today we talk about one of the most beautiful and honestly, unique traditions in Spain: Sant Jordi in Catalonia. So… who is Saint George? Picture this: a brave knight, a terrifying dragon, and a princessabout to meet her fate. According to the Catalan version of the legend, Saint George slays the dragon and from the dragon’s blood, a red rose blooms, which he gives to the princess. And just like that… a symbol of love is born. Fast forward a few centuries, and that legend transforms into something magical.Every April 23rd, Catalonia celebrates Sant Jordi, its patron saint, with streets filled with books and roses everywhere. Think of it as a mix between Valentine’s Day and World Book Day, but with way more soul.  Traditionally, men gave women roses, and women gave men books, but today, everyone gives bothto everyone. It’s about love, culture, and connection. Now here’s where it gets even more interesting: the book tradition didn’t come from the legend, it was added much later. In 1929, a literary initiative in Barcelona promoted reading, eventually aligning with April 23rd, the symbolic date linkedto literary giants like Cervantes and Shakespeare. So, what you have today is a perfect fusion: Love from the legend and Culture from literature. And trust us, if you’ve ever walked through Barcelona on that day, it’s unforgettable. By the way, Jorge has already captured this magic in a special video on his YouTube channel during a Sant Jordi celebration; the name of his channel is Traveling with Jorge in YouTube. Don’t miss it… it brings everything we’re talking about to life. Because Sant Jordi isn’t just a tradition… it’s a feeling. S3, Ep : 36. Hidden Chains: The Untold Story of Slavery

Welcome back to Spanish Loops. This week, we take on a subject that is as uncomfortable as it is essential: slavery. Not just the version most people immediately associate with the Atlantic world, but a deeper, broader reality that stretches across civilizations and centuries. Slavery has existed since the earliest organized societies. In places like Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome, enslaved people were part of the economic and social fabric, building empires, serving elites, and sustaining entire systems of power. Across the Islamic world, including Al-Andalus, slavery also played a significant role, often tied to war, trade, and cultural exchange. But as always, here on Spanish Loops, we zoom in on Spain. The story becomes even more complex when we reach the turning point marked by Portugal reaching East and conquering territories in Africa, and Christopher Columbus's first voyage. From that moment, Spain became another player in a global network that would redefine slavery forever... The transatlantic slave trade. Alongside powers like Portugal, France and United Kingdom, Spain helped shape a system that forcibly moved millions of Africans to the Americas. Enslaved labor fuelled economies, built cities, and left scars that are still visible today. Yet within this harsh reality, there were also stories of resilience and transformation, individuals who rose from enslavement to become influential figures in society, challenging the very systems that bound them. This episode doesn’t shy away from the human cost. It explores the moral contradictions, the economic motivations, and the cultural legacies that still echo in modern Spain and beyond. Because understanding slavery isn’t just about looking back, it’s about recognizing how history shapes identity, inequality, and memory today. Learn, reflect, and question what you thought you knew. In this episode will take you on a journey across time, continents, and perspectives. This is not just history. This is a conversation we still need to have. S3, Ep : 35. Spain vs USA: The Real Everyday Differences and Life Explained.

Let us ask you something… How different is life, really, between Spain and the United States? Because we all think we know the answer, right? Big houses, big cars, fast living on one side… Slow meals, late nights, and “family first” culture on the other. But today… we go way beyond the clichés. In this new episode of Spanish Loops, Fran and I take you into the real differences, the ones you only discover when you actually live in both places. We’re talking about housing… not just size, but lifestyle. We’re getting into education… from everyday school life to those iconic American graduations you’ve seen a hundred times in movies. We explore weddings… traditions, expectations, and yes, who pays for what, because that changes everything. And even inheritance… something rarely discussed, but deeply connected to culture and family values. Now… here’s where it gets interesting. We’re not doing this alone. Today we welcome back someone very special to Spanish Loops: William Rosendin. He was with us in the early days of the podcast, and bringing him back now feels like closing a circle… but at a completely different level. Because he’s exactly what this conversation needs. An American who truly understands Spain, not just as a visitor, but from the inside. The mindset, the rhythm, the small details that most people miss. And that’s what makes this episode different. This is not about which country is better. It’s about understanding how people live, why they live that way… and what we can learn from both sides. Thinking about moving, traveling, studying abroad? Just curious about how life really works across the Atlantic? This episode is for you. Relax… and let’s get into it.
