    One Take: Revenge of the Nerds

    In what might be the most controversial movie they've ever done, Steve and John go back to 1984 to discuss Revenge of the Nerds. Directed by Jeff Kanew with an incredible cast that includes Anthony Edwards, Robert Carradine, Ted McGinley, John Goodman, James Cromwell, Bernie Casey, Timothy Busfield, Curtis Armstrong and Donald Gibb, Revenge of the Nerds is simultaneously a heartfelt and positive movie about outsiders and a vertiable cavalacade of racial, sexist and homophobic stereyotypes, deeply insenstive jokes and multiple incidents of sexual violence that are frankly, inexcusable. Neither John nor Steve thinks Revenge of the Nerds is a great film, but it has its positive aspects and is certainly a window into a particular time and place. It's also fairly chilling when you consider that the nerds of that generation became some of the most powerful people in our world today.

    Before the passport stamps and the CNN Emmys, Anthony Bourdain was a nineteen-year-old college dropout washing dishes on Cape Cod. That summer is the subject of Tony, the new A24 film from director Matt Johnson (BlackBerry), written by Todd Bartels and Lou Howe and drawn from the early chapters of Bourdain's 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential. Set in 1970s Provincetown, it follows a would-be writer who takes a job at a seafood joint called The Flagship and discovers a whole other life. Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) plays the young Bourdain, and critics have singled him out for catching the vulnerability under the swagger. Antonio Banderas is the magnetic chef who runs the kitchen, Leo Woodall (One Day) steals scenes as a line cook who can't stay out of trouble, and Emilia Jones (CODA) plays Tony's girlfriend Nancy. Reviews have called it warm, funny, and bittersweet, though some find the female characters thin. Bourdain was born in New York in 1956, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1978, and spent two decades in New York kitchens before Kitchen Confidential blew the lid off restaurant culture and made him famous at 44. Television followed: A Cook's Tour, No Reservations and CNN's Parts Unknown, which turned him into something closer to a foreign correspondent than a food host. Tony is about the moment before any of that, when a kid who wanted to write found the thing he'd end up writing about. John and Steve dig into the film, the performances, and what it gets right about the man whose voice so many of us still miss.

Directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne, Natalie Wood, Jeffrey Hunter, Harry Carey Jr., Vera Miles, Pippa Scott, Lana Wood, and Ward Bond. The film ia directed by John Ford and written by Frank S. Nugent, based on the 1954 novel by Alan Le May. It is set during the Texas–Indian wars and stars John Wayne as a middle-aged Civil War veteran who, accompanied by his adopted, partially Native American nephew (Hunter), spends years looking for his abducted niece (Natalie Wood). Steve and John recorded an episode on this film during the first season of the show that was just over an hour long.     Bonus Short: Remembering Dolly Parton

    On August 25, 2026, Parton died in Nashville after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80. Long before she was a screen icon, she was one of twelve children growing up in a one-room cabin in the Smoky Mountains, writing songs and singing on local radio before moving to Nashville the day after her 1964 high school graduation. Her first number-one hit, "Joshua," arrived in 1970, followed by staples like "Coat of Many Colors," "Jolene," and "I Will Always Love You" — but it was 9 to 5, opposite Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, that made her a household name. The title song, whose rhythm she reportedly worked out by clicking her acrylic nails together on set, became a number-one pop hit and earned her the first of three Academy Award nominations. She went on to Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, opened Dollywood in her home mountains, and kept giving back for decades — her Imagination Library has mailed free books to millions of children, and she donated $1 million toward COVID vaccine research at Vanderbilt. She was married to Carl Dean for nearly 60 years, until his death in 2025. Her death brought an outpouring of grief and love from across music and film. Jane Fonda said, "she is woven into all our lives and hearts forever." Reba McEntire wrote, "thank you for all the wonderful things you did for us here on earth." Sally Field said, "if there are truly angels on earth, then we have just lost one." Carol Burnett remembered her simply: "we were a family. That's who she was." Kacey Musgraves put it plainly: "the world feels a lot less sparkly all of a sudden." Rest easy, Dolly.
