    Defending history: from Ninoy through EDSA to the present with Ging Deles and Kiko Aquino Dee

    Send us Fan Mail Watch the video premiere on YouTube On August 21, 1983, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch critic of the Marcos regime, was assassinated on the tarmac of what was then called the Manila International Airport. According to the Martial Law Museum, “Ninoy’s death ignited a fire among the opposition.” Less than 3 years after Ninoy’s assassination, the Filipino people went to the streets in a non-violent mass protest called the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution and ended the two-decade Marcos dictatorship. Here are some of the things that happened between then and now: Cory Aquino became president, and then 18 years after that her son Noynoy Aquino got elected; Martial Law victims received some reparations and billions of the Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth were recovered; however, in 2022 Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., son of the ousted dictator, got elected to the presidency and returned to Malacañang. And even before that, the Philippines was ravaged by Rodrigo Duterte’s violent “War on Drugs.” Given this context, our North Star for this wayfinding mission will be these questions: Given the Marcoses' return to power, how do we reevaluate EDSA and the aftermath of Ninoy’s assassination?How do we preserve the memories of the victims of Martial Law despite the efforts of some towards historical revisionism?What should we learn from the people who helped topple the Marcos dictatorship, and how can we treat the project of building a more just and free society as an intergenerational responsibility?Thank you once again to our guests for lovingly navigating these questions with us. Thanks to the internet and social media, nefarious actors have found it easier to undertake massive disinformation campaigns. This adds to the fact that billionaire-controlled algorithms often let misinformation spread like a virus, beating the pace and reach of the fastest fact-checkers. To top it all, the rise of AI slop and deepfakes has made the work of fighting misinformation even harder. But as important as it is to fight falsehoods and “fake news,” this impetus can be abused to muzzle good and honest journalism and curtail free speech. The versions of the bill pose serious threats, such as criminalizing speech or even reporting deemed politically inconvenient. In other words, we will be wondering about the nature and value of wondering itself. The Commission on Higher Education’s proposed Reframed General Education curriculum, put forward in April 2026, halves the number of general education units at institutions of higher learning. The Reframed GE is meant to address the current demands of the job market and to help schools produce “employment-ready” graduates. However, the Reframed GE results in many existing subjects, particularly in the social sciences and humanities, being subsumed into other courses.     Send us Fan Mail This June, we will celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. For our second episode, we will talk about something that viscerally links us to our national identity and history daily – we will talk about food. In our wayfinding today, our North Star will be these curiosities: 1) What do we mean by Filipino food, and who gets to define it? 2) How do our dishes in the present day connect us to our history? And– 3) How can interrogating the systems that turn ingredients grown on farms into prepared food on our tables make us confront the challenges of our time? As someone who delights not only in tasting but also in learning about Filipino food, the connections of our food traditions with those around the world have me curious. As we can see from our guiding curiosities, when we ask questions about our sustenance, we see how it inevitably connects us to our history and our present. Furthermore, I am also interested in how food intersects with my other interests, from climate and environment to human and land rights. After all, even just a cursory investigation of how our food is produced quickly leads to questions of power and justice. In other words, food is inherently political.     Wayfinding Towards Hope with John Aruta and Bea Tulagan

    Send us Fan Mail April is Earth Month. For our first episode, we will talk about climate anxiety, grief, and hope. Did you know that there is a psychometric tool called the Climate Change Anxiety Scale, or perhaps, that Filipino youth are found to be most prone to climate anxiety by a study? Today, we will discuss the latest findings from a Filipino-led study entitled Who Worries the Most? Socioeconomic Status, Housing Material, and Eco-Anxiety in a Developing and Climate-Vulnerable Country, which are consistent with the findings of an earlier study that those who experience the worst impacts of climate change are also the ones who have the highest levels of climate anxiety, and are in turn the ones who are most spurred to engage in actions to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis. As someone diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, and bipolar disorder, these findings made me curious. In our wayfinding today, our North Star will be these curiosities. 1) How do we not feel completely hopeless in these times?2) How is community mental health resilience a climate justice strategy?3) How can we honor our climate anxieties while still tending to our hope and fight?
