Mannhunting - Public Enemies

This month on Mannhunting, Alex and Rob are tackling Public Enemies, Michael Mann's dramatization of the FBI manhunt for notorious Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger. The film touches on the fascist sympathies of FBI founder J. Edgar Hoover and the prologue to the modern surveillance state. But fundamentally Public Enemies is about a bank robber and the way he is hunted and eventually cornered. In that story Rob finds a lot to love, but Alex sees a thematic muddle and doubtful execution of every idea. Like Dillinger and the FBI, they just have to settle this with a shootout. For many Latinx kids in the ‘00s, the party crew scene was a safe space to express themselves as they came of age in the grit and glitter of Los Angeles. A space to make friends, forget about your problems and dance the night away. But the scene wasn’t always physically safe. There were shootings and police raids. Many adults saw the scene as gang-adjacent and the media fueled negative stereotypes of kids who were out of control. One of the teens who got caught in that easy narrative was Emmery Muñoz, after she was murdered in 2006. Host Janice Llamoca goes on a Y2K-filled journey back in time to her own party crew days to find out what this scene meant for teens like her and Emmery, and why – to this day – Emmery’s case remains unsolved. “Mr. President, It Is Time”: Inside the Fall of Kabul

Ever since he can remember, Hamdullah Mohib has just wanted to go home. As a child, he and his family were forced to flee Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979. Years of violent civil war followed, as well as the U.S.-led invasion to remove the Taliban from power in 2001. All this time, Hamdullah dreamed of one day returning to Afghanistan to help bring peace to the unstable region. When he was tapped to become the country’s National Security Advisor, he thought he finally had his chance. That all changed in August 2021: the U.S. pulled its troops for good. The Taliban took back the country. And Hamdullah – once again – had to flee. One year since the fall of Kabul, Hamdullah is still struggling to come to terms with the fate of the country he loves. In this episode of VICE News Reports, Dr. Mohib sits down for a candid conversation with VICE World News senior producer Adam Desiderio to explain what happened in the final hours leading up to the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul.
