Be Solid Learning

Bridget Barrus, LMSW

You love your kids. You want to raise good humans. And some days, you still find yourself standing in the kitchen wondering, “What in the world am I supposed to do with THIS?” Welcome to the Be Solid Learning Podcast—a practical, down-to-earth conversation about raising capable kids, building stronger relationships, and helping our families grow through the very real stuff of everyday life. Hosted by Bridget Barrus, a school counselor, social worker, longtime family advocate, and mom of a big family, the Be Solid Learning Podcast brings together child development, professional experience, and a whole lot of real life. Because understanding what kids need is one thing. Figuring out what that looks like when someone is melting down, shutting down, talking back, giving up, blaming everyone else, or missing a shoe when you needed to leave five minutes ago? That's where things get interesting. This isn't about perfect parenting. And it isn't about memorizing the “right” thing to say in every situation. It's about helping kids—and the adults raising them—develop skills that actually matter: self-awareness, emotional regulation, responsibility, resilience, healthy relationships, confidence, courage, and a strong sense of who they are becoming. Everything is grounded in the five SOLID Principles: See Clearly. Own Your Choices. Live Courageously. Invest in Relationships. Daily Growth. Each month, we'll explore one important area of development from several angles: The Family Conversation takes a deeper look at what's happening beneath the behavior and why it matters. SOLID in 10 gives you one useful perspective and one practical tool you can actually use in real family life. Ask Be Solid tackles real questions from parents and families—without judgment, impossible standards, or pretending there is one perfect answer. And we'll finish each month with One Small Shift: something simple you can say, try, practice, or change without overhauling your entire family by Tuesday. You'll hear honest conversations, practical strategies, developmental insight, real-life examples, occasional guests, and probably a few reminders that sometimes everybody needs a snack before we attempt any meaningful personal growth. Because strong families aren't built through one perfect conversation or one perfect parenting decision. They're built over time—in carpools and kitchens, during hard conversations and second chances, through mistakes, repairs, laughter, frustration, and thousands of ordinary moments. You don't need a perfect family. You need a place to start. Let's build something SOLID.

Be Solid in 10: Are You Solving Problems Your Child Needs to Solve?

What if helping your child too much is actually making you more necessary? As parents, we're good at solving problems. We remember, remind, organize, fix, step in, and smooth things over—usually because we love our kids and genuinely want to help. But there's a catch: We want capable kids, and capability develops through practice. If we're always doing the remembering, thinking, fixing, and solving, who is actually getting the practice? In this Be Solid in 10, Bridget explores the difference between supporting our kids and accidentally taking over the work they need to learn to do themselves. You'll learn one simple three-step skill: PAUSE → HAND IT BACK → SUPPORT PAUSE: Ask yourself, “Is this mine to solve—or theirs to practice?” HAND IT BACK: Instead of immediately giving the answer, ask, “What do you think you could do?” SUPPORT: Stay available without taking over by asking, “What do you need from me?” Because eventually, our kids turn 18...and then 25...and eventually 40. The goal isn't to raise kids who never need us. It's to raise increasingly capable people who know how to think, choose, solve problems, recover, and ask for help appropriately—while knowing we're still firmly in their corner. Work yourself out of the job. Not out of the relationship. 🎧 About Be Solid in 10: Short, practical conversations that take one real family challenge and give you one useful perspective and one skill you can actually use. Stay grounded. Keep growing. Be SOLID.
